SECTION I. Introduction & Summary of Report The purpose of this Report and information for the School Board of Trustees is to convey the consistent existing Elementary School programming components/criteria across the school district. In Section II of this Report there is a Summary of Work Matrix which clarifies how the scope and needs at each elementary are addressed. It is important to take into consideration the following: Equal but not same for school program criteria Commonality based on completed input discussions with Cooks Corners and Memorial Elementary School Collaboration and guidance from the VCS Administration Input and discussion with the Superintendent s Advisory Committee Gibraltar Design and The Skillman Corporation determining opportunity to find cost savings such as a uniform Gym design Building and site unique characteristics require some compromise to the degree of equality Valparaiso Community Schools has the extraordinary opportunity to establish dynamic and consistent elementary learning environment change across the entire school community Gibraltar Design, Inc. 5 Identical Program Spaces Several Program components are nearly identical design solutions across the district for the five existing Elementary Schools: Secure Entry Office Area Prototype Classroom Gymnasium Music and Stage Market Space(s) Building-wide [PTO] Storage Corridor Student Cubbies SECTION III. Programming Components District-Wide Similar Program Spaces The Program components below will be district-wide but may require unique solutions due to the physical differences between the buildings: Kindergarten Rooms Media Centers Collaboration Space(s) Outdoor Learning Playgrounds Traffic flow and parking In addition to Collaboration Space there are Support Spaces needed throughout each school. Examples would be: Speech Therapy Resource Room [FROG] Social Worker Office The following existing Elementary Schools have similarities allowing for consistency and replication of programming across the school district: Cooks Corners Elementary Memorial Elementary Parkview Elementary Thomas Jefferson Elementary Northview Elementary Programming Components [left] indicate the commonality which can be achieved. Working closely with the Administration and school building Principals, the designs will seek to achieve the best solutions and equality. Central Elementary is significantly different but through clever planning can be nearly equal in program. Flint Lake Elementary is already equal with some changes like a secure entry needed Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 3
TO BUILDING E ENTER REPRESENTATIVE EXAMPLES [above] OF SECURE ENTRY A. Secure Entrance and Office Area Secure entry into the school is achieved by all visitors entering the school through one main entrance into a secure vestibule, (refer to diagram). Upon entering the vestibule the main entry doors to the school remain locked and ONLY by proceeding into the main Office for identification can an individual proceed into the remainder of elementary. Office Area Common program components: Secure Vestibule Reception/Waiting Area Clinic/Nurse with Restroom Principal Office Conference Room Office Workroom Faculty Unisex Toilet Storage 2015 Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 4
Concept Idea Images B. Classroom Prototype Initiative Summary The classrooms District-wide will be an AGILE learning environment that can: Adjust to meet the instructional, social, and academic needs of each learner Adjust to fit the delivery style of each learning leader Adjust to lesson planning Be ready for technology [devices] Maximize the opportunity for student collaboration and conversations of learning Be centered around small group instruction Easily be rearranged to accommodate special visitors and student presentations Provide support, supervision, and improve classroom behavior management 2015 Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 5
Representative Gym Floor Plan C. Gymnasium, Community Use, and the Market One important aspect of all of the elementary schools is the ability for the facility to support a 24/7 type functionality for the community. This is achieved through the careful design of the Gym and Market along with the related supporting spaces. This is outlined below and with the adjacent illustration. Program Criteria for Gym & Market: Youth-size basketball court Stage and bleacher seating Separate entrances for community functions Public access while remainder of school secure Public restrooms PTO Storage 2015 Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 6
D. Learning Lab Concept Learner Opportunities: The Learning Lab will be a safe place that a student can take risk and learn in a way that is outside his or her comfort zone. This is a chance for a learner to discover, create, and implement real world application. This is space where teachers can be creative and allow students to discover what type of learner they are. Teaming Opportunities: The Learning Lab is an opportunity to create a unique learning experience that will reach multiple classrooms. It s an opportunity to partner with multiple teachers and create an impactful and memorable lesson without it taking over your classroom. Professional Development Opportunities: This should be used as a space where teachers can learn and perfect their craft. Using partner teachers, administration, or instructional coaches to co-teach in this space is a way to take risk, learn, and continue to get better. For staff, this can be a place where professional development occurs and model teaching happens. The term Learning Lab is used as a place to mean learning, but it doesn t stop with the students Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 7
E. Outdoor Learning Possibilities Outdoor learning space should be used as an extension to classroom learning. We know that we work with all types of learners. Using alternate spaces like this will stimulate learners that are nature smart. In a whole group or small group setting you can create opportunities for student presentations, nature walks, writing, reading, and science experiences to inspire learners in an alternate learning environment. This shows our students that learning can happen anywhere Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION III. PROGRAMMING COMPONENTS DISTRICT-WIDE PAGE 8
SECTION IV. Interior Updates Elementary Summary Each of the existing elementary schools will receive an interior design update to varying degrees with some or all of the following components: Entry statement New flooring Refresh walls such as painting Doorways and new doors Restrooms Vestibules and corridors Furniture and furnishings Signage and VCS Brand The goal of the elementary interiors update across the district is to create a youthful, spirited environment which matches the neighborhood and individual school feel and identity while equally belonging to the Valparaiso Community Schools Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION IV. INTERIOR UPDATES ELEMENTARY SUMMARY PAGE 10
Gibraltar Design s goal is the same as that of the Administrative Leadership and Board of School Trustees: The goal of these elementary schools is to provide the Valparaiso students with the best educational environment for enhanced learning, opportunity, and achievement. Respectfully submitted, GIBRALTAR DESIGN 2015 Gibraltar Design, Inc. SECTION IV. INTERIOR UPDATES ELEMENTARY SUMMARY PAGE 11
