6 GUIDING PRINCIPLES The building will provide a safe, inviting, and inspiring space for all learners - students, staff, and the community. The building will provide for ease of supervision, safety and security while maintaining a welcoming, open atmosphere. The space will allow both the Middle and High Schools to maintain distinct identities while sharing key spaces and having a blended aesthetic. The design shall include appropriate technology and flexible spaces to promote individualized / small / large group learning. Comfortable / multipurpose learning and meeting spaces will be central organizing elements of the design. The building will be a community asset where certain spaces are accessible during both school hours and after-hours. The building and site should be designed for easy wayfinding, ample circulation and parking space, and access to natural light and views. The design shall celebrate the history, tradition, and pride of Hermantown and represent the community's values and culture.

7 DESIGN CRITERIA Classrooms should be arranged to support flexible organization, either by department or grade. Sloped-top lockers should be organized in two clusters, easy to supervise from a central location, and be accessible after hours. The building shall be designed around a campus center a multiuse cafeteria/commons with access to major public building elements. The design shall have two flexible media centers. The Middle school media center should have an emphasis on housing a book collection, while the High school media center should have a technology/digital commons emphasis. The site shall allow for separate bus and parent drop off areas. The Auditorium will be adjacent to both the music suite and the campus center commons.

8 DESIGN CRITERIA The Gymnasium will be top-loading and have public access adjacent to the campus center commons. The main attendance office should be at the main entrance with a secure vestibule. High School Administration and counseling shall be at the main entrance, and Middle School Administration and counseling shall be at the Middle School. Locker rooms should all be on the same level and be adjacent to the practice fields. Site design should allow for ease of access to stadium in the north area of the site. The community shall not have general access to educational areas or student environments during school hours. During events, a variety of lock-down scenarios shall be accessible. Students shall have access to lockers, commons, and some digital commons areas during non-school hours.
