4 Project Introduction As part of the 2015 Bond Program, a new middle school was planned to address current and projected growth within the district. As part of the project, the district will also realign grade levels at the elementary and middle school, incorporating the sixth grade into middle school campuses. This alleviates crowding at the primary level, allows for future growth and helps to ease the transition of students from elementary to middle school. With multiple sources of traffic it is important to provide separate areas of circulation for bus/visitor access and parent/teacher access to help alleviate traffic congestion on site. The teachers and parents enter from FM 731 while the buses and visitors access the site from FM 711A (Collins). To accommodate the amount of car stacking, approximately 2,100 linear feet of drive has been designed for the parent drop-off/pick-up lane. There are approximately 300 parking spaces as requested by the district. Independent School District NEW JOSHUA MIDDLE SCHOOL JOSHUA INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT The new middle school campus will provide the following: Classrooms for 6th 8th grades with an initial capacity of 600 students and a core space capacity of 750 Cafeteria/dining with stage Full service kitchen Tech App labs Controlled entry vestibule Media center Two competition gymnasiums with seating for 600 in one and 300 in the other Shared weight room for boys and girls athletics Competition multi-purpose field with concessions and practice field with approximately 600 seats for the home side and 400 seats for the visitors Site Consideration The new middle school will be built on property owned by the district. The site is located at the intersection of FM 731 and Collins and includes very large, old growth trees and a steeply sloped terrain. These items present some challenges. Extensive grading is needed to provide a suitable area for the building. It is the preference of the school district and the neighboring city of Cross Timbers to preserve as many trees on the site as possible to maintain a buffer between the school and the neighboring residential area. The building has been located to minimize the amount of trees that are required to be removed. Runoff water will need to be retained on site and will be used for irrigation similarly to how it is used at the existing Loflin Middle School. Building Design The building s compact, single-story design is a product of the collaborative effort between the Superintendent, her staff and the design team. A driving force in the design was the desire to keep 6th grade separated from 7th and 8th grades. The design accomplishes that while allowing shared spaces such as the elective classes to be accessed off of a main hallway. Fine arts has direct access to the exterior drive for ease of loading for offsite performances. The PE and athletics are situated so that students have direct access to the play fields. The cafeteria is located directly off the bus loop acting as a holding area for students prior to loading. Future growth was also a consideration, and each educational wing was designed to accommodate future additions. NARRATIVE New Joshua Middle School, Joshua Independent School District 3
