Modjtahedi, MD Alena Reznik, MD Jennifer Rizzo, MD NEEDS ASSESSMENT Ophthalmologists must stay at the top of their game constantly updating their practice by incorporating new evidence-based therapies, surgical techniques and scientific insights. Results of needs assessments indicate an educational need for a succinct update on the latest developments in ophthalmology from experts in the field utilizing didactic instruction, video presentations, panel discussions and interactive roundtable sessions. This course is designed to change physician performance in the areas of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology and cataract surgery. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the end of the program, participants should be able to: List the indications for use of the implantable miniature telescope (IMT) in order to select patients appropriate for this technology. Discuss the current screening recommendations for patients on plaquenil therapy in order to prevent visual complications associated with this medication. Compare and contrast the different aqueous shunts available for the surgical management of glaucoma in order to maximize surgical outcomes. Discuss new developments in the genetics of Stargardt s Disease, coloboma and microphthalmia in order to develop an awareness of the complex issues associated with these rare conditions. Discuss how employers must adjust their management style for employees with different personality types in order to foster a productive work environment. DISCLOSURE OF RELEVANT FINANCIAL RELATIONSHIPS As a provider accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the University of California, Davis Health System Office of Continuing Medical Education must ensure balance, independence, and objectivity in all CME activities to promote improvements in health care and not proprietary interests of a commercial interest. The provider controls all decisions related to identification of CME needs, determination of educational objectives, selection and presentation of content, selection of all persons and organizations that will be in a position to control the content, selection of educational methods, and evaluation of the activity. Course directors, planning committee members, presenters, authors, moderators, panel members, and others in a position to control the content of this activity are required to disclose relevant financial relationships with commercial interests related to the subject matter of this educational activity. Learners are able to assess the potential for commercial bias in information when complete disclosure, resolution of conflicts of interest, and acknowledgment of commercial support are provided prior to the activity. Informed learners are the final safeguards in assuring that a CME activity is independent from commercial support. We believe this mechanism contributes to the transparency and accountability of CME. MISSION STATEMENT To educate health care providers through evidence-based activities that emphasizes advances in medicine, new medical technology, biomedical research, and changes in health care delivery to improve clinical outcomes.
