2 Intended Audience This program is designed for practicing ophthalmologists working in comprehensive and specialized practices as well as ophthalmology residents and fellows. Statement of Need This one and one half day meeting is designed to present the latest developments in ophthalmic disorders and their management. It will include a wide range of topics relevant to clinical care and thus enable ophthalmologists to maintain or improve the knowledge, skills and professional performance needed to provide the best possible medical and surgical eye care for their patients. 3 Faculty Speakers and Topics Faculty Speakers and Topics 4 for Diana Do, MD is the Vice Chair for Education and Director of the Carl Camras Center for Innovative Clinical Trials in Ophthalmology. Dr. Do is a leading clinician-scientist who specializes in the treatment of retinal conditions. She is the principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous clinical trials investigating new treatments for retinal diseases such as wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD), dry AMD, diabetic eye disease, and retinal vein occlusion. Dr. Do has authored over 75 publications in the medical literature and has contributed to over 21 book chapters. Before joining the University of Nebraska, Dr. Do was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Head of the Retina Fellowship Training Program at the Wilmer Eye Institute (Department of Ophthalmology), the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Ophthalmic Medical Personnel Leon Herndon, MD is a professor of Ophthalmology at Duke University School of Medicine. Dr. Herndon has research interests in the differential burden of glaucoma on African-derived populations, which involves evaluation of genetics, economics, medical access, and therapy response. His clinical interests involve the medical and surgical management of Glaucoma. Dr. Herndon completed medical school and residency at The University of North Carolina, and fellowship at Duke University Medical Center. Quan Nguyen, MD is a retina surgeon and uveitis expert who specializes in the treatment of retinal conditions and ocular inflammation. He is the principal investigator and co-investigator on numerous clinical trials investigating new treatments for retinal diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, and ocular inflammation. Dr. Quan Dong Nguyen currently holds the McGaw Endowed Chair in Ophthalmology and is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Director of the Stanley M. Truhlsen Eye Institute at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Prior to being chosen for the chairmanship at Nebraska, Dr. Nguyen was Associate Professor of Ophthalmology for Diseases of the Retina, Vitreous, and Uveitis, at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Nguyen received his baccalaureate from the Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire and his bachelor and Master of Science degrees simultaneously in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Subsequently, he earned his medical degree at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed an internship in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and a residency in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Nguyen also completed (continued) fellowships in immunology and uveitis at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, ocular immunology at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, and medical and surgical diseases of the vitreous and retina at the Schepens Eye Research Institute and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Philosophy and strategies for the management of Uveitis: When to begin and how to choose. > To assess the current challenges in the management of non-infectious Uveitis. > To evaluate the role of immunomodulatory therapy in the management of noninfectious uveitis. > To develop an understanding of the risks and benefits of corticosteroids and immunomodulatory therapy for ocular inflammatory diseases. Victor Perez, MD is an Ophthalmologist at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. He received his Medical Degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and Residency at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard Medical School in Boston. Dr. Perez completed fellowships at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in both Cornea and External Disease and Uveitis. Additionally Dr. Perez received research fellowships in both Ocular Immunology at Schepens Eye Research Institute at Harvard, and Immunology at the Department of Pathology Brigham & Women s Hospital at Harvard. His Clinical specialties include Ocular Immunology, Uveitis, Cornea and External Disease among others. Update in the Management of High Risk Corneal Transplantation > Describe the evidence-based approach to managing medical diseases of the cornea and ocular surface, including inflammatory, infectious and degenerative conditions. > Compare the advantages and disadvantages of recently popularized techniques of corneal transplantation and understand strategies to incorporate these techniques into practice. Ocular Surface Diseases: Medical and Surgical Treatments > Identify indications and surgical techniques for corneal disease in the presence of cataracts, glaucoma, ocular surface disease, and complex anterior segment anatomy. Leah Levi, MD is nationally known in her field and is currently the president of the North American Neuro- Ophthalmology Society. Prior to joining Scripps Clinic, she was on faculty at UC San Diego for 23 years, where she directed the neuro-ophthalmology service. She also taught medical students, ophthalmology residents and neurology residents, and was honored with 16 teaching awards. In addition, she has been named as a Top Doctor by San Diego Magazine and US News and World Report. Dr. Levi received her medical degree at The University of Sydney, and completed her residency at Tufts New England Medical Center. Dr. Levi has completed Fellowships in Neuro Ophthalmology & Orbital Disease as well as a Research fellowship in Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment. 4 6 for Faculty Speakers and Topics Alan Crandall, MD graduated from the University of Utah, receiving his medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine. He completed his internship in surgery at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center as well as his residency and fellowship in ophthalmology at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. He joined the University of Utah Ophthalmology Department in Dr. Crandall is the John A. Moran Presidential Professor and Senior Vice- Chair of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, Director of Glaucoma and Cataract at the Moran Eye Center, University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, he is Co-Director of the Moran Eye Center International Division. Dr. Alan Crandall is a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners as well as a member of the American Board of Ophthalmology. In addition he is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Glaucoma Society, the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, as well as the International Intra-Ocular Implant Club. He is a past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. He completed his ophthalmology residency, a glaucoma research fellowship, and a chief residency in Ophthalmology at Yale. He did a fellowship in Intraocular Lens Implantation at New York Medical College. Dr. Silverstone founded Temple Eye Physicians in 1977, which merged with Ophthalmic Surgical Associates in 2001 to form The Eye Care Group. He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and specializes in cataract and lens implant surgery and glaucoma. Dr. Silverstone is a clinical professor and the assistant chief of ophthalmology at Yale. He was part of the Yale team that developed Timolol, the first modern medication for the management of glaucoma and has been active in the development of ophthalmic computer software. His current research interests include the medical treatment of glaucoma, the development of clinical care guidelines, and medical decision support software.
