Yen created the Sushirrito brand name and trademarked it in Several years later, Yen collaborated with Ty Mahler, former executive chef of Roy s Hawaiian Fusion in San Francisco, to launch Sushirrito in January 2011 long before hybrid foods became a trend. The idea for Sushirrito arose when Yen couldn t find a quick, quality sushi lunch spot while working in downtown San Francisco. Lines at Sushirrito were more than an hour long every day since opening for the first couple of months. Sushirrito was highlighted on Apple Inc. s World Wide Developer Conference s Keynote by Craig Federighi on June 2, 2014.
4 Team Peter Yen and Ty Mahler are the driving force behind Sushirrito. Yen s strategic vision and business expertise are complemented by Mahler s extensive culinary talents and operational skills. Both are professional, personable and passionate making them an ideal duo to lead this exciting emerging restaurant brand. Peter Yen Founder, Chief Executive Roller Peter is passionate about entrepreneurship, consumer brands, sustainability and, of course, sushi. He sees Sushirrito as the perfect way to bring them together: creating and building an emerging consumerfacing business while respecting the environment. Peter created Sushirrito after graduating with his MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern, where he focused on Entrepreneurship and Marketing. Prior to business school, Peter worked in restaurant private equity, healthcare investment banking and corporate strategy roles. He graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a BA in Molecular Cell Biology. Peter s greatest gratification with Sushirrito is simply seeing so many people eat sushi burritos with their bare hands every day. Ty Mahler Executive Chef, Chief Operating Officer Ty has gained and applied tremendous knowledge from some of the very best chefs in the industry. He brings creativity to Sushirrito s famed sushi burritos, based on classical training in various culinary flavors including French, Japanese and American. Prior to Sushirrito, Ty was Executive Chef and part-owner of Roy s Hawaiian Fusion in San Francisco for five years. His culinary experience also includes two years at Emeril s in New Orleans. After graduating from the New England Culinary Institute, Ty was invited to intern under Chef Jean-Michel Bouvier at his Michelin Star restaurant L essential in France. An active member of the Asian Chef Association, Ty won a Silver medal at the 2009 World Culinary Contest held in Taipei.
