1 What is the business support/ employer offer from Higher Education Providers in the North East Higher Education Product or service Consultancy Description Consultancy (i.e. the provision of expert advice to business by university staff for payment) is one of the main mechanisms by which the region s universities can apply knowledge and expertise to private and public sectors alike. The region s universities offer consultancy services, enabling businesses the opportunity to access and apply the latest knowledge arising from research expertise to explore business problems and identify appropriate business focused solutions. Examples of the professional and tailored services offered by the region s universities to meet business needs include: Access to specialist opinion and advice Assisting with product, process and people development Market research and feasibility studies Business improvement and planning Advising on technical issues Solving problems for companies Suitability for businesses (guide) All sizes and types of business HE providers offering this Contact details Jennifer Thompson tel: j.a.thompson@dur.ac.uk Business and Development Mangers: - Graeme Young, graeme.young@newcastle.ac.uk, Omar Al-Janabi, omar.al-janabi@newcastle.ac.uk, Marie Williams, marie.williams@ncl.ac.uk, David Potter, david.potter@ncl.ac.uk, Julie White, julie.white@ncl.ac.uk, John Wilkinson tel: John3.wilkinson@northumbria.ac.uk d Business Development Team tel: Business and Enterprise tel: Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) is a national scheme that seeks to develop companies by the placement of ambitious and talented graduates (Associates). Supported by a leading member of academic staff, the Associate works with their host company to undertake strategic projects that add- value to the business. This involves taking advantage of the wealth of technological, scientific and managerial knowledge available in the graduates host university. KTPs vary in length and scope they can be from 6 month to 3 year partnerships. Short KTPs have also been introduced they can be between wks in length and funded in the same way as KTPs KTPs are designed to help companies of all sizes and are suitable for most industries. Private and public sector organisations can take part in KTPs and currently, up to 60% of the cost can be drawn from government/ Regional Development Agency funding. The business is however, expected to contribute to the proportion of the Associate s salary costs. Academic research can produce ideas and products that have real commercial potential so, working in partnership with the businesses who have the commercial know-how, enables universities to develop the products/ technologies, creating niche markets and economic advantage. Technology transfer is likely to be undertaken by companies which are established and looking to diversify/ expand. Universities will advise on potential funding and the legal issues, including exploitation of the research and any resulting intellectual Technology Transfer Office tel: Technology.transfer@dur.ac.uk Contact Business and Technology Mangers: - Philip Harley (Science, Engineering, Electronics, Computing), phil.harley@ncl.ac.uk, Samuel Neil (Life Sciences, Medical and Healthcare), sam.neil@nck.ac.uk, Alan Weddell (Life Sciences, Medical and Healthcare), alan.weddell@ncl.ac.uk,

Contract research takes on many forms. As Universities are hosts to a wealth of the latest technological equipment, testing facilities can be made available to companies to test prototypes and analyse samples for example. Public and private organisations across all industry sectors can utilise the expertise available. Costs are dependent on the contract research top be undertaken. Jennifer Thompson tel: j.a.thompson@dur.ac.uk Contact Business and Development Mangers: - Graeme Young, graeme.young@newcastle.ac.uk, Omar Al-Janabi, omar.al-janabi@newcastle.ac.uk, Marie Williams, marie.williams@ncl.ac.uk, David Potter, david.potter@ncl.ac.uk, Julie White, julie.white@ncl.ac.uk, John Wilkinson tel: John3.wilkinson@northumbria.ac.uk Business and Enterprise tel: ktp@tees.ac.uk Higher Level Skills and CPD As new systems, technologies, processes and business practices emerge, the Universities can work with companies to design and develop customised training solutions for particular business needs. These solutions can often be delivered at a time and place to fit in with the business s schedules and strategy. Universities are more responsive to employer needs for higher level skills and are developing tailored learning materials and media that can be delivered flexibly - and delivered as a combination of taught programmes which may include: - on-site training -programmes are delivered to a larger numbers of learners in their workplace, or distance learning. - Work-based learning - the learner(s) follow(s) a study programme, centred around their roles at work with guidance from staff at the (especially beneficial for individuals who want to combine higher education with professional development) - Universities can also offer accreditation of existing in-house courses, company training schemes and Durham.business@durham.ac.uk Management Development Centre Lynsey Tibbett management.development@durham.ac.uk Durham Business School, Business Support Lauren Huntingt tel: Lauren.huntington@durham.ac.uk Brett Kelly tel: Mobile: brett.kelly@ncl.ac.uk Work Related Learning Services - Sue Graham tel: Sue.graham@northumbria.ac.uk Training/short courses - Barry Walsh tel: Barry.walsh@northumbria.ac.uk
3 Accreditation of Prior (Experiential) Learning (APEL). Some universities have created dedicated centres in which training is delivered to business. In addition, a wide variety of existing courses across a wide range of disciplines are available, with qualifications such as NVQ's, Continuing Professional Development programmes, full-time and part-time degrees, many of which are appropriate to business needs (see Qualification Framework for breakdown of HLS programmes) Business Development Team Ruth Helyer tel: wfdt@tees.ac.uk Student Projects and Placements Students (undergraduate and postgraduate) are often required to undertake placements in businesses to develop their own experience but also to work on a project, issue or problem for the employer. There are a range of placement schemes available for business and community organisations of varying duration and type. All offer a way in which new talent, ideas and innovation can be injected into the business, often at low cost. For example, the Shell STEP scheme gives SMEs in the region access to talented graduates through the eight week summer vacation period. Such schemes can be of particular interest to SMEs or other organisations (including schools) where there is a shortage of expertise or lack of time to undertake particular development projects. Placements of longer duration (up to a year) are normally paid positions. Working for a year within an organisation helps students get a feel for what the real world of work is like, as well as gaining transferable skills that help with final year studies, and helps organisations to develop new or existing areas of the business. Suitable for all sizes of organisations- public and private sectors. Where as some of the products and services from universities are more suitable for more established companies, taking on a placement student or having students work on business projects is particularly useful for SMEs as it brings additional capacity and expertise into the business Undergraduate Internships Matt Deakin Matthew.deakin@durham.ac.uk Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning Internship Opportunities - tel: Entrepreneurial.learning@durham.ac.uk Newcastle Work Experience - Lesley Cairns tel: Lesley.cairns@ncl.ac.uk Careers Employment Service tel: rd 48 Week Sandwich Placements Business Gateway Team tel: Undergraduate Student Placements tel: Internships Internships are paid graduate placements (currently funded by government). businesses benefit from having a graduate work full time at their premises for six months. Suitable for all sizes of organisations- public and private sectors. Durham Graduate Internships 2010 Matt Deakin tel: Matthew.deakin@durham.ac.uk Interns will work on a variety of projects and the organisation will pay a contribution to the salary this varies between institutions. Whereas some products and services from universities are more suitable for established companies, taking on a placement student or having students work on business projects is particularly useful for SMEs as it brings additional capacity and expertise into the business. It also enables companies to try before you buy in terms of recruiting a graduate. Universities run programmes to raise awareness of enterprise with staff, students and graduates and give guidance on how to turn good ideas into new business ventures. This includes providing support for the early-stage development of ideas with commercial potential, providing commercial advice, funding patent applications and legal costs, negotiating exploitation agreements (e.g. licences) and supporting spin-out company formation. Suitability of these services depends on the type of support required. Existing businesses can also access specialist support and training that could help to move the seed of a business idea forward. Some universities have experienced account managers to work with businesses to develop their ideas and identify where the can support the development. This can include business planning, finding financial assistance, intellectual property, copyright protection and ownership, and signposting to other business resources and support options. They offer training courses in enterprise to help develop business ideas, business information seminars, and all the region s universities take part in a regional business planning competition where ideas are developed and tested against each other for a substantial prize. Universities also offer hatcheries and incubators (business space) to enable embryonic businesses to develop in an appropriate and supportive environment.
