Certificate in Management Studies (CMS) Kerry Barker Lecturer, CMS This is a development programme for existing or aspiring managers in industry, business or public and voluntary sectors. There are no formal academic entry requirements and experience of work in management roles is taken into account. We welcome applications if you are looking to develop your leadership and management career. The course lasts one year from September to June with regular weekly classes on Mondays between pm The aim of the course is to help you acquire and develop the skills and knowledge you need to become a more effective manager. It s a gateway to build on your career status and improve your management opportunities. It also provides you with the academic qualifications to back up your on-theground experience and enhance your professional profile. The main emphasis of the course is on the development of personal skills, techniques and qualities required to help you in your day-to-day management role. We value your own individual experience and seek to create the conditions for you to apply what you learn to your immediate work environment and make a real impact. You have the option to register with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) to achieve an additional Level 6 CMI qualification with no additional work. The Business School holds annual guest speakers and networking events with the CMI and other professional organisations which we encourage you to attend. The CMS is an ideal stepping stone to further achievements and would provide you with the academic entry qualifications for the following courses: Healthcare Management MSc (see page 13) Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) or Master of Business Administration (MBA) (see pages 6-9) /courses/ I chose the University of Huddersfield on the recommendations of past graduates and due to its prestigious reputation. The course allows me to develop my knowledge with the opportunity to adopt my learning immediately into my profession. The tutors teach you tools and techniques on how to identify and challenge your assumptions and encourage you to modify your perceptions by evidence based views. It represents the first step towards becoming a successful MBA student. My career aspiration is to become a management consultant, and through this course and subsequent others, it will support me in successfully transforming organisations through technology. Joseph Pickering Certificate in Management Studies (CMS) 4 University of Huddersfield 5

Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) Peter Greenan Postgraduate and postexperience Admissions Officer (Business) How to apply mba This course is for you if you have some prior academic qualifications combined with an appropriate level of managerial experience. You will need a degree or other professional qualifications and at least 2 years relevant experience at a managerial level. The course will take 15 months part-time. You ll have flexible study options available including block study (4 day teaching blocks ) or regular weekly classes on an afternoon and evening. We ll discuss with you what kind of attendance might be suitable for you to fit around work and personal commitments. This course introduces you to the activities, tasks and processes of organisations, increases your awareness of your personal managerial role and provides greater insight into management functions. You ll find yourself exchanging insights and ideas on contemporary issues with managers from other disciplines and business sectors, both private and public. A key module encourages you to focus on your personal development through reflective practice. You are encouraged to develop perspectives on the issues facing management both now and in the future. We work closely with professional bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and you have the opportunity to gain additional professional qualifications without the need for additional study or assessment. The DMS will help you demonstrate your management development potential and make an impact in your immediate role or open new possibilities. The DMS completes a significant part of the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme of study allowing you to complete a further period of study to achieve a full MBA award. The MBA is the most globally recognised senior management qualification. /courses/ After already having a number of marketing qualifications I wanted a wider business knowledge that encompassed a whole range of skills rather than just one aspect of business. I like the teaching style, you are treated with respect and I think there is an underlying understanding that as students we ll also put in as much or more effort into studying the modules in our own time and so the lessons are quite relaxed. I have a study plan which I try and stick to and this helps me keep on schedule. I aim to move into a more managerial role and this course will give me deeper understanding of business on a more coordinated and strategic scale. Diana Greenwood Diploma in Management Studies (DMS) 6 University of Huddersfield 7

Simba Dzikiti Healthcare Management MSc Business Support Manager, NHS England 14 University of Huddersfield 15

Doctor of Business Administration/Doctor of Public Administration (DBA/DPA) Dr Annie Yeadon-Lee Course Leader, DBA/DPA This course is for ambitious managers who want to develop professional practice at the highest level. You will need a UK Master s degree or equivalent, preferably in a Leadership or Management related discipline. In addition you will need at least three years postqualifying experience and be currently employed at a middle or senior level. The course takes a minimum of four years, up to seven years. Action learning sets run up until the end of Year Four. You ll be required to attend one day per month for nine months commencing in October of each academic year. Year Two has an additional two blocks of two days teaching and learning in Term One. The flexibility of the programme means you are not away from your place of work for extended periods of time. Years One and Two of the course focus on taught modules in Business Research Methods, Reflective Leadership, Data Collection and Analysis and the development of your Research Proposal in preparation for your thesis. A range of teaching and learning methods are used including lectures, seminars, workshops and action learning sets. We employ a variety of assessment methods including assignments, business cases, a publishable journal article, a personal impact statement and finally a doctoral thesis accompanied by a viva voce examination. We work closely with professional bodies such as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) offering you access to guest speaker events and networking. I decided to select DBA over a traditional PhD route, due to it nature of contact/ taught time which provides support and guidance. The course enabled a shared learning journey. The teaching practice includes two years of a taught programme, which helped set the foundation stones for the research. The course also delivers an action learning approach, plus one to one time with a supervisor in specialism field. I have worked in the education sector for over 15 years. I m a big believer of lifelong learning and taking opportunities in life. The DBA/DPA is a dynamic, contextbased professional doctorate, equivalent to a PhD but is centred on fusing high level academic knowledge and advanced professional practice. The programme retains emphasis on your own strategic contribution to your organisation while enhancing your analytical and research skills. The DBA/DPA helps you develop a much deeper knowledge and understanding of both yourself and the context in which you work, helping you become a better manager and make an immediate impact in your organisation. /courses/ Linda Etheridge Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) University of Huddersfield, Placements Coordinator 16 University of Huddersfield 17

Legal Practice Course (LPC) Angela Grunert Senior Lecturer, LPC This course puts you on the road to becoming a fully qualified solicitor. You will need to have satisfied the requirements of the academic stage of legal education (typically holding an LLB(Hons), Common Professional Examination (CPE) or Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)). In certain situations nongraduates may also be eligible, please contact us for advice. The course will take 2 years part-time (on one afternoon and evening per week). Our students benefit from networking, mentoring and training opportunities through our innovative Partners in Law scheme. We have a realistic mock court room where you can hone your debating skills and take part in mock legal hearings as well as dedicated LPC teaching rooms. The LPC course prepares you for training to be a solicitor. Graduates from the LPC can continue their legal education through our LLM courses (see pages 20-21). The LLM is recognised by the Solicitors Regulation Authority for Continuing Professional Development purposes. All my lessons are in the Business School, and we have a mock court room which we use for skills based assessments such as interviewing and advocacy. In litigation we do a lot of mock trials, so having this room is perfect. We do a lot of small group work which means you have to get involved with everyone, which is great because we support each other. In the long-term I d like to open my own firm once I ve completed my LPC. The course consists of two stages, which can be studied simultaneously. Stage 1 consists of the 5 Core Practice Subjects: Business Law and Practice, Property Law and Practice, Civil and Criminal Litigation, Wills and Administration of Estates and Professional Conduct and Regulation along with Legal Skills. Stage 2 consists of three elective subjects of your choice, providing a balance between commercial and private client areas, so as to cater for your specific career aspirations. /courses/ Hannah Pedley LPC student 18 University of Huddersfield 19

Law (LLM), Commercial Law (LLM), International Law (LLM) Tina Hart Course Leader, LLM This course is for law (or related subject) degree graduates who want to engage in a critical analysis of a range of legal subjects. If you have a non-law degree you can access the course by taking an Introduction to Law module. The course will take 2 years part-time. As well as taught study, distance learning options are also available. Studying for an LLM will enable you to engage in deeper study and engage in critical discourse in the legal subject area. Depending on your chosen LLM route this course offers opportunities for those who want to work for international organisations, NGOs and governments with knowledge and expertise gained on the International LLM route. The Commercial Law LLM is ideal for those who want to specialise in commercial legal practice. The general LLM route is attractive if you want to work in a range of organisations such as NGOs, international institutions, government and provides a means of analysing the way in which the law impacts on their work. Your dissertation project will be an opportunity to apply a research based study to a critical understanding of a legal area of your choice. We also offer a Legal Practice (Top-up) LLM course if you have completed the Legal Practice Course (LPC), the Bar Professional Training Course, are a Fellow of ILEX or qualified solicitor or barrister. Our law students benefit from networking, mentoring and training opportunities through our innovative Partners in Law scheme. The course provides an ideal foundation for those intending to pursue PhDs and an academic career or enter a range of businesses and legal positions. /courses/ Taking on the part-time LLM course of study was a great challenge, but the desire to achieve my goal of gaining the qualification was extremely strong. It helps tremendously if your Company and boss are supportive and encouraging. I am currently employed by Univar, as an Environmental, Health and Safety Manager with Key responsibilities to provide leadership and guidance in all SHE matters to ensure that the business operates within legislative requirements. The company and I believed that it would be beneficial for me to have specialist knowledge in different aspects of the law. The LLM offered a course of study which I found academically challenging and rewarding, both personally and professionally. The lecturers in the Law School inspired me to achieve and made my time there so fulfilling and worthwhile; it was indeed a truly enjoyable experience.
