4 INDUCTION PROGRAMME FOR FULL-TIME STUDENTS Start date: Monday 5 th October 2015 ENROLMENT Enrolment is an important process that confirms your status as a Cardiff Met Student. This process is essential in that it allows you access to payment of fees, programme information systems, and enables you to obtain your Student ID Card during Induction. Enrolment process for UK/EU students Enrolment is an important process that confirms your status as a Cardiff Met Student. You can complete the online self enrolment process from any computer through our Self Service system from 1 st September If you applied through Self Service you will already have the necessary login details for self enrolment, otherwise these will be sent to you via . Please note that in order to self enrol your status with Cardiff Met must be Unconditional Firm (UF). To begin your enrolment process, please visit Stepby-step guidance is provided. This process is essential in that it allows you access to payment of fees, programme information systems, and enables you to obtain your Student ID Card during Induction. Enrolment process for international students Please go to the I-zone in the main reception area at 9am, ensuring that you bring your passport/visa/original education documents along with you. This is to enable you to go through the enrolment process. There will be student helpers at the I-zone to help with any queries. 4

5 INDUCTION For ALL students The first induction session for the MSc HRM programme will start at 1pm on Monday 5 th October 2015 in Cardiff School of Management (CSM), located in the Ogmore Building. You will need to go to the CSM reception area for 12.45pm. This day and the rest of the week will include meeting other students on the programme, getting to know the staff, and introducing you to life at Cardiff Metropolitan University. A more detailed schedule will be available well in advance but please treat this as a full week in Cardiff Metropolitan, as there will be activities for each day of the week from Monday 5 th October 2015 to Friday 9th October 2015 inclusive. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND THE INDUCTION PROGRAMME Please Note: Full teaching then starts during the week commencing 12 th October Induction Programme: 5 th 9 th October 2015 Induction is an opportunity to introduce you to Cardiff Metropolitan University, and to meet the teaching team within the Department of Business and Management in particular. It will also enable you to meet the other students on the programme. There will be a formal programme of induction events held by the University and the Students Union and details of these will follow but as a Programme Team we would like to point out a number of activities that we will be offering to you: Meet the Tutors You will be able to meet members of the teaching team and to learn more about the modules that you will be studying. Introduction to the Library - A tour around the Library Facilities and the Learning Centre. Introduction to Moodle - You may be aware of Virtual Learning Environments VLE s that we use here in Cardiff Met we use a system called Moodle. In order to get the best from your studies you will need to be familiar with how it works. This session will give you a chance to feel more comfortable with the system. Tour of Llandaff Campus As well our impressive Management Building there are a range of other facilities on this campus for example, a gym and places for students to get food and drinks. Knowing how to get around the Campus can be confusing initially and we hope this session will help you find your way around. Studying in Wales This will help you learn more about Cardiff and the local environment. 5

7 PROGRAMME OVERVIEW Aims The programme aims to provide a high quality and professionally relevant postgraduate experience. The programme has been designed to support and develop critical appreciation of how human resource policies, procedures and practices are designed and deployed in organisations and the contemporary issues and debates that surround HRM s role and function. Graduates will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge for a multidisciplinary approach to business, organisations and HR issues. By enabling students to function as autonomous learners, the resulting graduates will have developed the foundations for future and continuing professional development. Purpose The purpose of this programme is that we aim to assist in facilitating your learning and development and to support you: To achieve an advanced level study of human resource management in a practical and well as theoretical context; To prepare for and/or develop your career aspirations in human resource management and related fields by developing skills at a professional or equivalent level, or as preparation for research or further study in the area; To develop your ability to apply knowledge and understanding to complex issues, both systematically and creatively, to improve business and management practice; and To enhance your lifelong learning skills and personal development so you are can continue your self-directed learning and career development. Upon the successful completion of the programme, you should be able to: Demonstrate critical awareness and understanding of the current theories and issues in human resource management and organisation studies and the development of conceptual frameworks to guide their applications. Demonstrate analytical skills, critical reflection skills and research evaluation skills necessary for appropriate decision making. Identify and evaluate the influences on and impacts of human resources policies, procedures and decisions in organisations, and their effects upon organisational leadership, decision making and business ethics. Demonstrate developed communication and inter-personal skills necessary to operate effectively in a strategic human resource environment Demonstrate and apply independent research and critical skills enabling investigation into relevant/appropriate areas. 7

8 Links to the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development Cardiff Metropolitan University is an Approved Centre of the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD). This course has been approved by the CIPD and therefore aligns with the knowledge components of the professional membership criteria. Studying a programme with links to a CIPD qualification is one of the most popular ways to become a member (you join as a Student member). This course will provide you with the underpinning knowledge towards professional membership and successful completion of the MSc HRM will mean that you will become an Associate Member of the CIPD. 9 Assessment Assessment will conform to Cardiff Metropolitan University s Assessment Regulations and its regulations for Modular Masters degrees by examination and dissertation (see Cardiff Metropolitan University Academic Handbook). You will be exposed to a range of different assessment methods over the programme. You will be given full details of the assessment requirements for each module that you study. Teaching Methods The philosophy of this programme is team co-ordinated teaching. Module teaching teams will be drawn from the course teaching team to provide a more effective framework to encourage and promote an integrated, interdisciplinary understanding of the field and to bring subject-specialist knowledge to specific areas of the curriculum. With a committed teaching team, with extensive experience of teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the approach to teaching and learning on this programme of study will reflect best practice in the field. Student Support The primary basis of student support is to be provided by the Programme Director and the associated administrative resource. In addition support will be provided by: The school-wide student mentoring scheme This provides a point of regular and personal contact for all students studying with CSM. An induction programme Student handbook and module guides. The Moodle Virtual Learning Environment. Library and study skills packages. Library and learning resources of Cardiff University (by arrangement). A 24-hour open access IT facility on the Cyncoed and Llandaff campuses. Unlimited worldwide web access. The Personal Tutoring team is dedicated to supporting all students at Cardiff School of Management in their personal, academic and professional development. As well as meeting students on a one-to-one basis, the team also run group seminars on a range of topics such as time management, critical reading and academic skills. 9

10 OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMME MODULES* This is just a brief summary of the modules that make up the MSc HRM: Contemporary Issues in Human Resource Management The aim is to introduce the student to the theory and practice of human resource management and organisation studies and to critically examine contemporary local, national and international issues that impact on the changing role and function of human resource management. Working in an increasingly complex and internationalised organisational context human resource professionals find themselves in different and new organisational settings and interacting with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The module aims to develop learners understanding of models and frameworks that support the strategic operation and decision making activities of human resource managers while developing an appreciation of the operational and systemic constraints that may affect autonomy and control in organisations. It also aims to develop an understanding of organisational behaviour. The module will look at the changing agenda with regard to new organisational forms, ethical practice and sustainability. Managing Change and Organisational Learning The importance of cultural sensitivity and awareness of outcomes of interventions to effect change is explored in this module. The module aims to develop knowledge and skills with regard to organisational change and the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development. Recruiting and Retaining Employees This module explores recruitment, selection and retention of employees. As such it explores policies, procedures and benefits that promote employee satisfaction and commitment including flexible work strategies, diversity management, induction, and training and development opportunities. It considers issues of skills gaps, employee turnover, sustainable work practices, organisational behaviour and HR planning activities which impact on recruitment and retention strategies and actions. Employee Relations The module aims to provide knowledge and understanding of a range of national and international debates and perspective on employer-employee relations in specific organisational settings. The module explores unionised and non-unionised working environments, issues of employee participation and engagement, and critically examines the roles and functions of different stakeholders in the structures, processes and other organisational aspects that impact on employment relations. 10

11 Leading, Managing & Developing People This module aims to introduce learners to different approaches to leading, learning and developing people in organisations in the context of change, ambiguity and organisational culture. The module explores research and practice development in relation to leadership styles and approaches; employee training, development and talent management ; and the links between human resource management and human resource development. The module also considers the development of skills, which are seen as important to the successful management practice in leading and developing people. Research Skills The purpose of this module is to increase skills and confidence in collecting, analysing and presenting information in different formats and for different audiences as well as directly developing research practice and skills. The module will form the foundation for the capstone project (research dissertation/action research project). The module also aims to increase capacity for reflexive practice and seeks to encourage learners to develop a strong sense of self-awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses as managers and colleagues. Finally the module aims to help learners make the most of their formal programmes of study with the inclusion of key postgraduate study skills and requires critical reflection on theory and practice from an ethical and professional standpoint. Research Dissertation This capstone research project is designed to mark the completion of the MSc in Human Resource Management enabling the student to undertake a detailed and critical piece of research. *[More details can be found in the MSc HRM Programme Handbook which will be provided when you begin the programme.] 11
