1 P a g e 1 The 1 st Cyber Security Workshop for Community College Faculty in West Texas Sponsored by National Science Foundation Organizers: Texas Tech University, Angelo State University, University of California at Riverside August 12-16, 2013 Lubbock, TX Dear Participant: Welcome to the first cyber security workshop specifically designed for community colleges faculty in West Texas. The workshop s goal is to promote cyber security education for 2 and 4-year colleges across the West Texas region. We also aim at transferring basic and advanced cyber security concepts to your classrooms so that the students graduating from your institute have experience with cyber security. This workshop is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) with the aim of promoting cyber security education through classrooms and courses offered in 2 and 4-year colleges and institutes. We hope that this workshop can be utilized as an educational model to be deployed across the nation to address the nation-wide demand for cyber security workforce. The History and the Organization The idea of offering summer workshops for community colleges incepted in April A group of faculty members from the Computer Science Department and Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Texas Tech University in collaboration with a team of faculty members from Center for Security Studies at Angelo State University worked together and developed the proposal for this project. The project includes: 1. Offering summer workshops in cyber security research and education for 2 & 4 year community college faculty in West Texas. The proposal was initially designed for recruiting 15 participants in each year of 2013 and Follow-up and mentorship activities to ensure successful transfer of lectures and materials provided to the participants of this workshop to the community colleges classrooms and introducing/integrating new cyber security courses. 3. Evaluate the success of the project in terms of the number of cyber security courses offered in the home institutes of the participants. The Selection Strategy for the Summer 2013 Workshop Upon building the online application forms and materials, we received a great number of requests and applications. The organizers developed a strategy to select the best qualified participants for the 1 st workshop. The selection strategy was to focus on motivation, teaching experience, chair s support letters as well as demonstrating the interest in introducing new cyber security courses or integrating the

2 P a g e 2 materials with the existing courses offered in their home institutes. The organizers selected 20 candidates for participation in the 1 st summer workshop (2013), and reserved other candidates for the summer 2014 workshop. The Program We have prepared an excellent research and education program along with multiple keynote speakers and panel discussion sessions. The workshop covers six exciting topics in major cyber security areas. Each topic consists of three sessions, each 1.15 hours: 1. Topic I: Cybersecurity Fundamentals, (Leaders: Wilson and Phelps) 2. Topic II: Information and Data Security, (Leader : Siami Namin) 3. Topic III: Network Security, (Leaders: Hewett and Mohsenian-Rad) 4. Topic IV: Software Security, (Leaders: Hewett and Siami Namin) 5. Topic V: Smart Grid Security, (Leader : Mohsenian-Rad) 6. Topic VI: Cyber Evidence and Forensics, (Leader : Phelps) We also have two keynote sessions: 1. Mark Harral, Chief Executive Office, Group NIRE (August 14, 2013) 2. Michael San Francisco, The VPR of Texas Tech University (August 14, 2013) 3. Feith Ari, The College of Education, Texas Tech University (August 16, 2013) The title, abstract, and the bios of the speakers will be provided during the workshop.

4 P a g e 4 The Check-in, Reception, and Banquet The reception will take place on Sunday evening (August 12) at Texas Tech McKennzie-Merket Alumni Center. Registration, check-in, and the reception will start at 6:00 pm. There will be a booth at the reception for check-in. You may also check-in in the morning of Monday August 12 from 7:00am to 8:00am, at the workshop location, which is the Advance Technology Learning Center (ATLC), located in the basement of the Texas Tech library. The banquet will take place at Texas Tech McKennzie-Merket Alumni Center on August 14. The Package and Agreement Upon registration and check-in, you will receive a package with the full description of the workshop, name tags, participant s agreement, evaluation forms, and the mentorship forms, the project organizers will describe the purpose of each form in the welcoming session in the morning of August 12, Travel Re-Imbursement Please note that the workshop will reimburse you up to $2000 for meals, travel and accommodations. You will need to collect all receipts and mail us the original receipts along with the completed reimbursement form. The Department of Computer Science at Texas Tech University will process and issue a check for the participant based on the receipts provided and the completed reimbursement form. Please note that because of logistic issues, the re-imbursement process will start after the workshop If you are driving to Lubbock, you will be reimbursed at the state approved rate for the distance from your starting place, as calculated by Texas travel regulations. The Venue Locations: The workshop sessions will take place in the Advanced Technology Learning Center (ATLC) located in the basement of the Texas Tech University Library: Texas Tech University Library, 18 th and Boston, Lubbock, TX, (The lectures, welcoming and closing sessions, and invited talks will be held in Advanced Technology Learning Center (ATLC), PC Lab 1 (in the basement of the Texas Tech Library) The panel discussion will take place at the Bullen Room located on the second floor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (close to CS Department): The Bullen Room, Electrical and Computer Engineering Building, the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering, Texas Tech University. The reception, check-in, and banquet will take place at the Texas Tech McKenzie-Merket Alumni Center, within walking distance of The Staybridge Suites:
