Artesia Blvd. Compton Ca Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences Course Syllabus-Fall 2015 Course Name: Sociology 101, Introduction to Sociology Section # 9214 Instructor: Office (virtual) Hours: Office Location: Ms. Haynes, vhaynes@elcamino.edu, ext. 2075/2076 Wednesdays, 7:30 p.m. 8:30 p.m. Counseling Department-Administration Building, Compton Campus Introduction Sociology 101 is a 3 unit course that is Associate Degree applicable and transferable to both California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC). This course fulfills a requirement for the Associate Degree Nursing Program and the Sociology Degree. Sociology 101 also fulfills lower division general education requirements for the CSU and the IGETC certification. ETUDES Course Management System This course will be using ETUDES which is a course management system supported by El Camino College. ETUDES is a web-based enterprise application designed to provide faculty and students with a powerful teaching, learning, and collaboration environment. You will be able to view your syllabus, complete assignments, tests and surveys, participate in chapter discussion questions, view your grades in the grade book, and view links to web resources. ISBN-13: Recommended Supplemental Materials: USB Flash Drive 2G (to store and save material) Course Description: In this course students analyze the influence of the social environment on behavior and social life, using sociological theoretical perspectives. Components of social structure and social culture are critically examined through sociological theories and concepts including socialization, deviance, social institutions, and social change. Inequalities based on issues such as social class, race, ethnicity, gender, and age will also be analyzed. Course Prerequisites: Eligibility for English 1A Course Objectives: Define and describe sociology as a field of study and explain the sociological perspective. Distinguish the relationship between sociology and other social sciences. Identify the scientific method and evaluate its relevance and use in sociology. Identify key theorists of sociology and the major sociological paradigms including the areas of study of these paradigms: structural-functionalism, social conflict, and symbolic interaction. Evaluate the concepts of culture and structure of societies and their components: and their application in the study of groups, societies, and individuals. Assess the process of socialization and its application in understanding the behavior of groups, societies, and individuals. Analyze United States society as part of the global society. Describe the major social institutions in American society; evaluate the impact of these institutions on groups and individuals; discuss changes in these institutions. Assess and evaluate sociological concepts and perspectives on similarities and differences in the behavior of individuals and groups. Student Learning Outcome: 1. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose of theoretical perspectives and apply sociological perspectives such as functionalism, conflict theory, and interactionism to social scenarios. 2. Students will define and demonstrate an understanding of sociological concepts, such as social structure, culture, socialization, deviance, and social stratification by applying them to social scenarios.

3 Assessment Activities You will be expected to log into ETUDES, read the course syllabus and accept its terms which is located ETUDES to avoid being dropped from the course as a No Show by 11:59 p.m. Monday, August 24, Students will be evaluated and assessed to demonstrate understanding of subject matter through the following activities: 1. You are expected to read the Course Textbook (Chapters 1-16) and Modules (lecture notes) in ETUDES. 2. Complete the required Introduction to the Course activities which include a quiz and discussion question. These assignments are designed to introduce you to the class and the course requirements. 3. You will be expected to complete all course requirements which include: Online Chapter (weekly) quizzes which are a collection of questions from your assigned reading (see course content page for specific chapters) consisting of questions from each chapter. All quizzes are timed and online located in the Assignments, Tests and Surveys area of ETUDES. Participation in class discussions (weekly) are required in this course and due dates are included in the instructions, announced in ETUDES and provided in the content section of the course syllabus. There will also be a timed Final exam located in Assignments, Tests, and Surveys area of ETUDES. This exam will assess your ability to demonstrate an understanding the course objectives and Student Learning Outcome (s) of this course. Detailed instructions will be provided in a forum developed in the Discussion and Private messages of ETUDES. A writing research assignment (located in the assignments, tests and surveys) is required in this course as well and detailed instructions will be provided in a forum developed in the Discussion and Private messages of ETUDES. There will also be opportunities (optional) to participate in extra credit current events activities. Detailed instructions will be provided in a forum developed in the Discussion and Private Messages area of ETUDES.

The following grading scale will be used: =A =B =C =D 263-below =F Attendance Requirements Attendance and participation is required in this course. It is important that you log into ETUDES the first day of course, read the course syllabus and accept its terms or you may be considered a "No Show" and dropped from the course. During the session you must log into ETUDES every day (Monday-Thursday) and at least once over the weekend or you may be considered absent and may be dropped. It is highly recommended however that you log into ETUDES daily (and at least once over the weekend) read announcements (daily) to insure you have received any updates or changes. Inactivity (not logging into ETUDES) in this course represents an absence and you may be dropped from the course because of excessive absences. A student who registers for a class and never attends (log into ETUDES) is still responsible for dropping the class. Attendance without official enrollment Students will not be permitted to attend classes in which they are not enrolled. Tardy and Absence Policy, Excused or Unexcused Absences A student may be dropped from class when the number of hours absent exceeds the number of units assigned to the course. If your absences and tardiness exceed the unit value of the course, you can be dropped. This rule also applies to excessive absences due to illness or medical treatment. You are required to log into ETUDES daily (Monday-Thursday and at least once over the weekend) and complete required activities. Inactivity in this course is considered an absence. Each day of inactivity (you do not log in or participate) will be considered an absence. After three (3) absences (not logging into ETUDES) from this course you may be dropped, however if you decide to not attend class it is your responsibility to drop the course.

5 It is recommended that you understand and adhere to the drop dates indicated on the academic calendar and important dates. Important dates are available on the first inside page of the class schedule pdf. It is also extremely important that you notify Admissions and Records if you change your address and/or telephone number during the semester. Contact your instructor immediately if there any questions concerning your absences through private messages in ETUDES. If you are unable to log into ETUDES send a message immediately vhaynes@elcamino.edu. If you have any questions concerning this course you can contact your instructor Ms. Haynes by the three major following ways: 1. Virtual Office Hours (the chat room). Wednesday s 7:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. This is the only time I am available in the Chat Room for an instant response. However I do drop in from time to time to read any messages left. 2. Questions directed to the Instructor (private) may be posted in the private message area of Discussion and Private Messages Area of ETUDES. Questions concerning this course may be posted in the (public) Discussion Area of ETUDES and I will respond within 24 hours vhaynes@elcamino.edu only if you are unable to send me a private message. It is highly recommended that you contact your instructor by sending an through private messages in ETUDES. Children in Classrooms Children are not permitted in classrooms while class is in session (however this is an online course). Attendance in class is limited to officially enrolled students and authorized visitors or guests. In addition, students must not allow children to be left unsupervised or unattended anywhere on campus. Statement of Student Conduct Conduct at El Camino College-Compton must conform to the laws of the State of California, District policies, and campus rules and regulations. The Faculty, staff and administration are dedicated to maintaining an optimal learning environment. The standards of behavior as outlined in this policy are essential to the maintenance of a quality college environment. Cheating violates Section I.B.1 of El Camino College s Board Policy 5138, Standards of Student Conduct. Board Policy 5138, Standards of Conduct: Dishonesty, including but not limited to cheating, plagiarism or knowingly furnishing false information to the college. When there is evidence of cheating or plagiarism in classroom work, students may receive an F for that piece of work or may be suspended from all classes for that term and the following term if deemed appropriate. Cheating or plagiarism violates Section I.B.1 of El Camino College s Board Policy 5138, Standards of Student Conduct. Details concerning the Standards of Student Conduct are available in the College Catalog and in the Student Handbook. Links are provided below

6 Instructors Expectations Completion of course materials is critical for passing this course. Students are responsible for material from the textbook as well as online assignments. All course work is expected to be completed by assigned due dates. Due dates for all assignments are indicated on the course syllabus, included in the instructions and announced in ETUDES. Late/Missed Assignment Policy Chapter Discussion Questions and Quizzes (which do not include extra credit activities, writing assignments and the final exam) have a grace period of 24 hours after the due date before being considered late. For example if an assignment is due by 11:59 p.m. Friday you will have until 11:59 p.m. Saturday to submit your assignment before being considered late. Every student with permission from the Instructor will be allowed to submit one (1) late assignment (except for Final exam, Extra credit and Writing Research assignment) at least once a session no questions asked and without a loss of points. All requests for this permission must be submitted no later than 48 hours (2 days) after the assignment is due. This request must be done in writing by sending a message to the instructor in the private message area of ETUDES. All other request to submit late assignments due to documented emergencies may be accepted with special permission from the Instructor. There will be no late assignments accepted during the last week of the Semester or Summer Session. Special Accommodations: El Camino College Compton Center complies with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of Students with disabilities who need special accommodations should make their requests by contacting me online vhaynes@elcamino.edu, send me a private message through ETUDES or by phone (310) ext or 2075 by the end of the first week of the Semester or Summer Session so that special accommodations can be made.
