Course Prerequisites: None Course Corequisites: None 2.1 Course Description This course is one of the four core courses required for the coaching education minor program at N.C. State University and will provide an overview of planning, organizing, leading, and evaluating within a sport context; fundamentals of budgeting, economics, marketing, strategic planning, ethics, and their use in sport settings; techniques of personnel, facility, and sporting event management. This course does not constitute credit toward meeting the Physical Education GEP requirement. 2.2 Student Learning Outcomes The student will: demonstrate that he/she has learned the fundamentals of sport management including planning, organizing, staffing, and leading through written exams; 1

2 demonstrate that he/she has gained a thorough working knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of ethics and decision making through class activities and written exams; and apply sport management principles to sport organizations through case studies, online exercises and a class project. 3 Course Resources and Materials 3.1 Textbook Applied Sport Management Skills. (2009) Robert N. Lussier, David C. Kimball 3.2 Course Resources The course resources will be available on the Moodle course website at wolfware.ncsu.edu. Be sure to confirm access to the website and acquire any necessary software to use the course resources within the first two weeks of the semester. 3.3 Communication Students are expected to check the Moodle course site, and Moodle announcements on a daily basis. Students are responsible creating the appropriate settings to have all NC State forwarded to other addresses when necessary. Failure to check the Moodle course site and respond to messages or Moodle announcements on a daily basis throughout the semester does not constitute as an excused reason for missing any graded component due date in this course. Common courtesy in all online communications is expected, including , discussion boards, chats, etc. Please do not use inappropriate or offensive language in communications. The penalty for such behavior can result in receiving a point deduction or no points for the assignment. Any s sent to the course instructor will receive a response within 48 hours, except on weekends and holidays, in which case the message will be answered on the next available weekday. 4 Technical Problems Students are responsible for confirming that all the required computer skills and software needed for this course are met within the ¾first two weeks of the semester. Technical problems that result from a failure to meet these requirements is not an excused reason for missing deadlines for any of the graded components of the course.

3 If you experience technical problems with the course website or resources, please contact the Help Desk at (919) 515-HELP (4357), the help desk, or visit the Help Desk website at To avoid missing deadlines due to technical issues be sure to make help requests during weekdays between 8am - 5pm and several days prior to final due dates. 5 Grading Final grades will be determined using the point distributions listed in the table below. Letter grades will be given according to the plus(+)/ minus(-) grading scale. More detailed information is located under Academic Affairs at, affairs/grades_undergrad/reg php. Grade Criteria for PEC 479 Sport Management Assignment/Activity Points Quizzes (5) 50 Midterm Exam 100 Final Exam 100 Class Project 50 Total Points Exams There will be 2 exams worth 100 points each. Questions may include multiple choice, true-false, definition, short answer, and/or essay. The dates for the exams are listed on the course calendar on the course website. Although the exams are offered online through the Moodle Quiz Tool, the exams are proctored and must be taken on campus or at an approved site off campus. Once the exam is started, the student will have 75 minutes to complete it Testing arrangements No appointments necessary! All testing will be done on a walk-in basis. Students should be mindful of closing hours for both Testing Centers, and give themselves plenty of time to complete their exams. All testing is first-come, first served. Any off-campus proctoring (via local college or university agency) must be approved by DELTA. Your contact person

4 at DELTA will be John Pugh ( ). If you miss a test deadline, your test score will be zero. Information regarding the testing centers can be found at Class Project There will be one class project. The details of this project are outlined on a separate handout that is attached to the Assignment on the course website. In brief, the assignment is a case study on someone who is employed full time in the sport industry. You must submit the name of the person you are interviewing by the due date on the assignment. No two students can interview the same person. The due date is the last date to submit the project. There is a 5 point per day late penalty for each day the assignment is late. 5.3 Quizzes There will be five 10-point quizzes given throughout the semester. The information for each quiz will come from materials presented in class as well as from exercises and readings. 6 Grading Policies 6.1 Late Or Make-Up Assignments Any graded activity used in this course will not be accepted after the due date without proper documentation for an excused reason as defined in the university academic policies under REG Attendance Regulations. All documentation for excused absences must be submitted via and must be verifiable by including contact information of relevant individuals. All make-up assignments must be approved by the instructor and completed within one week of returning to class. Make-up assignments will not be permitted when a graded activity is missed for unexcused reasons. 6.2 Grading Methods Students are responsible for selecting the grading method that best fulfills their academic goals for this course. It is highly recommended that students confirm with their academic advisor that this course can be taken with any grading method other than a letter grade. The last day to drop this course or change the grading method is available on the Academic Calendar on the Registration and Records website. All requests for grading method changes by the course instructor after those published dates will be denied.

5 6.2.1 Grading Scale Each student has the option of taking the class for a letter grade (+/-), credit only, or audit. A+ = B+ = C+ = D+ = F = A = B = C = D = A- = B- = C- = D- = Credit-Only This course cannot be taken for Credit Only if the student is planning to complete the Coaching Minor requirements. Students who are taking this course as credit-only must score 70% or higher on all work combined to receive a Satisfactory (S) grade. Otherwise a grade of Unsatisfactory (U) will be given. Students are strongly advised to confirm their grading status for this course with Registration & Records. If you have questions concerning the appropriate grading status please refer to your academic advisor. More information regarding the university policy about credit-only can be viewed under REG Grading Audit Audit students must score above 50% on all work combined to receive a grade of "AU" for this course, otherwise a grade of "NR" is given. Audit students are exempt from the course attendance policy. More information regarding the university policy on audit status can be viewed under REG Grading. 6.3 Incomplete Grades Incomplete grades will be assigned only if unavoidable and unforeseen events occur, such as a medical emergency, preventing the student from completing a course requirement before the final grades are submitted. Incomplete grades are not a substitute for subpar academic performance in this course. Incompletes must be made up before the end of the next regular semester in which the student is enrolled. Incomplete work is to be limited to accomplishing the work not completed. It is the students responsibility to contact the course instructor in a timely manner to complete any work required in the subsequent semester. The University s policy concerning incomplete grades can be viewed under REG Grading. 7 Common mistakes Not logging on to the Moodle course website every day to check and/or announcements Not reading the details of the assignment/project

6 Not watching the video lectures Waiting until the day before a project is due to ask questions about the project Not submitting projects on OR before the due date Waiting to scan or a project at the last minute and having technical difficulties Expecting to be permitted to redo or resubmit projects AFTER the due date Waiting too late to schedule your exam with the proctoring service.
