2 Taste for quality, respect for mankind and the environment, and a great desire for innovation unite several prestigious productions of Tuscany Good Living and Know How: two sides of unique Tuscany Beautiful Tuscany, from a different angle. Tuscany, land of Good Living, feeding soul and body. Where a lifestyle has remained untouched throughout the centuries, although always keeping up with the times and maintaining the right balance between innovation and secular heritage. This is the image Tuscany wants to communicate to the world, in occasion of Expo Starting off from the main theme of Expo 2015, Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life, Tuscany will tell, throughout 2015, its story made of research and innovation, applied to every field and sector of its life and economy. Research and Innovation make this region one of the most desired and yearned for places in the world. A land of Good Living but also of Know How, careful of community relationships, ready to invest in human capital, and to appraise its ancient know how through a constant and contemporary reinterpretation. This is why Good Living and Know How are so strongly tied together here, like two sides of the same medal, giving space to that natural, civil and financial richness which has always been the fundamental feature of Tuscany s heritage and culture. These skills will be the nucleus of the rich programme of events and meetings that the Region is organizing to create a connection between the venue of Expo 2015 in Milan, and Tuscany, with the aim of attracting to our territory some of the visitors to the event in Milan.

3 Tuscany in Milan: - from May 1st to 28th, 2015: with an exhibition space of 200 square metres in the Italian Pavilion, where the concept of Tuscan Good Living and Regional excellence related to the main theme of Expo will be exhibited; - for the whole duration of Expo 2015: with an office within the Italian pavilion, a constant point of reference for meetings with the nations participating in the events and Tuscany s entrepreneurial and institutional realities; - for the whole duration of Expo 2015: with an institutional space within the City of Milan, animated for the whole 6 months by various events and initiatives, a point of reference in the city for the foreign delegations and for locals, too; - for the whole duration of Expo 2015: with a series of events and initiatives which will be inserted into the schedule of the events of the Italian Pavilion and, in September, with a leading role on the theme creativity and preservation. Travelling Expo Tuscany For Expo, on Regional territory Tuscany of Good Living and Know How tells the story of its products, its prestigious traditions, the strong aptitude for innovation, always leading towards the future through business itineraries which touch all sectors where the productive skills of the region are excellent: agro-alimentary, forestry, fashion, interior design, nautical sciences, mechanics, technologies for cultural heritage and high technology. These itineraries are journeys for discovering Tuscany, organized for the financial delegations attending Expo 2015 to create the occasion for developing new and prosperous financial and commercial relationships. These itineraries may be personalized according to the specific fields and needs of each delegation.

A strong innovative spirit, always looking to the future make Tuscany unique.

6 SECTOR OVERVIEW Tuscany, with its immense and highly esteemed Cultural Patrimony is very attentive to cultural themes. Here there are 7 of the 45 Italian UNESCO World Heritage Sites, more than 600 (72 of which are National Museums) of the 4,800 Italian Museums, more than 20,000 cultural heritage sites, and more than 6.5 million volumes preserved in more than 1,000 libraries. Tuscany is also the richest region in Italy for its real estate cultural heritage, both archaeological and architectural (6,451); and the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Galleria dell Accademia, which are the third and fourth worldwide paying museums most visited in Italy, after the Fori Imperiali in Roma and Pompei. In this context, to evaluate specific and innovative itineraries within the world of enterprise, Tuscany has developed a very particular line of evaluation: the support of activities with a high technological content connected to the cultural heritage field through the establishment of a regional District of Technologies of Cultural Heritage and sustainable cities DiT- BeCs connected to the programme for the Innovation of technologies of sustainable cities, project POLIS. stones and metals, Graphic-reflective investigations for paintings, 3D Digital documentation for optical scanning and laser, The monitoring of the Museum Area, Investigation of archaeological sites with radar techniques Diagnostics for architectural and wooden structures The development of optical-electronic devices and monitoring Laser technologies for preservation Integrated methodologies for multidimensional modelling, structural and material analysis and monitoring of the architectural and monumental patrimony Application methodologies for the knowledge of innovative material for preservation Innovative technologies for documentation and fruition of the latter ICT Applications to Cultural Heritage and solutions The district The Cultural Heritage Technologies and Sustainable Cities Regional District unites strong and historical entities of restoration and innovative start-ups in which they can invest. Main technologies developed by experts in the area: Laser applications for the restoration of natural

7 In a sense, the origins of Tuscany s modern scientific competence regarding the technologies for Cultural Heritage go back to 1966, when the river Arno flooded Florence and the damage had to be repaired. Umberto Baldini (director of the Office for the Superintendence of the Restoration of Florence) in collaboration with Enzo Ferroni (Director of the Institute of Chemistry and Physics of the University of Florence) made chemical analyses of all the materials in order to infuse the scientific culture of Restoration with new ideas, as well as architectural-historical and artistic theories. A few years later, in 1971, Franco Piacenti founded in Florence the Cultural Heritage Studies Centre of the National Research Council to collaborate with the centres in Rome and Milan. The Central Institute of Restoration and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Hard Stone Factory) created at that time scientific laboratories with the necessary tools and an expert team. Source: R. 8 DISCOVERING TUSCANY A new Florentine Renaissance era Florence is a modern city looking to the future without ignoring its extraordinary past. The Renaissance cradle never stops renewing itself and expressing its own values of innovation and believes in the progress of knowledge. In Florence Michelangelo and Brunelleschi became symbols of past and present innovation, and are still today the gems of our visiting package. Brunelleschi s Dome The famous Brunelleschi Dome covers the cross vault of the Duomo of Florence. It was the biggest dome in the world and is still the biggest dome ever built in stone (the internal diagonal of the dome is 45 metres, and the external diagonal is 54 metres). Its enormous size could not allow the traditional constructive method with concrete ring supports; so several hypotheses have been made about its building technique. Uffizi touch The Uffizi is one of the most famous museums in the world: the guided tour extends to the recently opened restoration site, in collaboration with Uffizi Touch, the third application available on the App Store and one of the most sold in the journey category, in Italy. With Uffizi Touch it is possible to visit the Galleria degli Uffizi freely and to have all its treasures in one s pocket: The Annunciazione by Leonardo, Primavera by Botticelli, Venere di Urbino by Tiziano, as well as the Corridoio Vasariano and 100 works stored in the Depository of the Gallery. Centrica, Tuscan startup, in collaboration with the Polo Museale Fiorentino, developed this App, the only one for iphone and ipad containing all the works exhibited in a museum of worldwide importance. It represents a unique guide to the Gallery in Florence. All the images contained in it are available thanks to the courtesy of the Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism Department. «Structura si grande, erta sopra è cieli, ampla da coprire con sua ombra tutti e popoli toscani.» (Leon Battista Alberti, De pictura) «So big a structure, high in the sky big enough to cover all the peoples of Tuscany with its shade.» (Leon Battista Alberti, De pictura) David by Michelangelo Seemingly forever, in art, it has been considered the perfection of male beauty, as Venere by Botticelli is the perfection of female beauty. Artists and art experts believe the statue of David to be the most beautiful artistic object ever created by man. In 2003 it was subjected to a very accurate cleaning and restoration process, under the supervision of the restoration laboratory of the Opificio delle Pietre Dure of

10 Firenze, to celebrate in 2004 the fifth century of its creation. During the visit, the story of David s statue and restoration will be told and explained. The Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Hard Stone Factory) Also known as OPD, it is an autonomous institution of the Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities and Tourism Department and its main role is research in the restoration of cultural heritage. The Institute has particular origins, created from an ancient and prestigious tradition and a modern and coordinated activity, apparent in its original name. Commissioned by Ferdinando I de Medici as a factory for ornaments made of stone, in the last decades of the XIX century, it has transformed the process of restoration: ancient materials first, and then it expanded its field to similar materials. After the great catastrophe of the flood of 1966 and the Institutional Law of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage Department of 1975, the Medicean factory and the Restoration Laboratory of the Superintendence the major protagonist of the post-flood restoration were combined. Later, also the minor laboratories created during the aftermath of the flood, were added to this nucleus Porta del Paradiso (The Door to Heaven) The Eastern Door of the Baptistery was called The Door to Heaven by Michelangelo who, they say, observing the panels, said: elle sono tanto benne che elle starebbono bene alle porte del Paradiso (they are so beautiful they would be perfect as the door to heaven). The door is divided into 10 wide rectangular frames, organized in two rows on both halves of the door, from left to right and top to bottom, representing scenes from the Old Testament. On every panel Ghiberti put more than one scene, so as to portray more than 50 episodes. There are also 24 small busts, portraits of important Florentine citizens, amongst whom there is also a Ghiberti self-portrait. The original panels of The Door to Heaven are preserved today in the Museo dell Opera del Duomo, finally restored. Piazza Duomo This is a unique grand museum composed of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Brunelleschi s Dome, Giotto s Campanile, the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Crypt of Santa Reparata and the Museo dell Opera del Duomo. Restoration Tuscany The expertise in the preservation field resides in the prestigious restoration centres of Tuscany, such as the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, the Tuscan Superintendence Archaeological Restoration Centre, and the Superintendence dedicated to the preservation of artistic, architectural and archaeological heritage, along with the organizations connected to the patrimony of cities such as Florence, Pisa and Siena. The itinerary leads the visitor to the discovery of the most beautiful archaeological, artistic and cultural

11 sites of Tuscany both in progress of restoration or recently reopened to the public. For example, we propose a tour in Tuscany to one or more of the following sites: - Pisa: The Leaning Tower and ancient Roman ships - Lucca: a guided tour along the ancient walls of the city, recently restored - Siena: paintings in restoration - Firenze and surroundings: The Medici villas, recently renovated University and Research Centres The ancient universities and the research laboratories of Tuscany work for the development of new technologies, which may be used for the evaluation of its immense cultural heritage. It is a highly qualified university formation program, a research activity on an international level, which involves all the technicians spread throughout the world. The IV Edition of the Salon, which, with the close cooperation of more than 300 institutional organizations, companies, training schools and associations active in restoration, preservation and re-evaluation of the Cultural Heritage is committed to cultural and exhibitive activities during the Salon. At the next edition, The Salon opens its doors with the awareness of offering to the public an opportunity of commercial, scientific and cultural confrontation, along with being itself a base for the development of the economy of this sector, the research and all the planning of activities connected to it. LuBeC, Lucca (ottobre 2015). LuBeC - Lucca Beni Culturali is the international conference on the evaluation of Cultural Heritage for integrated tourist marketing. LuBeC Digital Technology is the contextual exhibition review of the ICT applied to the evaluation of Cultural Heritage for the promotion of the land. In 2015 the XI edition will be held.
