2 CATANIA 2014 The choice to candidate Sicily and Catania in particular for the 12 th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) 2014 arises from: innumerable remarks regarding the wonderful territory, the touristic services and attractions of Sicily the proven ability of Catania to host international sports events in a excellent way 2

4 Italians call their country il bel Paese ( The beautiful Country ) and the 37 million tourists visiting Italy every year agree with this statement: Italy is a treasure chest full of art, a living creation of humankind. Rich in frescos and mosaics, paintings and sculptures, civil and religious architectures, Italy is the greatest art warehouse existing, a never ending collection of creations spread in squares, churches, museums and art gallery all around the country. In a recent past, Italy has successfully hosted various high profile international sports events, e.g.: XX Winter Olympic Games, Turin 2006 XXII Winter Universiade, Turin th FINA World Championships, Rome 2009 Men s Volleyball World Championship, Italy 2010 Catania 4

5 Just in Sicily there are 5 sites considered World Heritage by UNESCO, masterpieces universally acknowledged as human heritage: Archaelogical Area of Agrigento Enna, Piazza Armerina and Villa del Casale The Aeolian Isles Syracuse and the rocky The baroque of the Vallum of Noto, which Catania is part of. 6 CATANIA Catania is tenth largest city in Italy, on the east coast of Sicily facing the Ionian Sea. It is the capital of the eponymous province, hosting 298,957 inhabitants (752,895 in the Metropolitan Area). Catania has got a long and eventful history, having been founded in the 8th century BC. During the 14th century and the Renaissance, Catania was one of Italy's most important and flourishing cultural, artistic and political centers, having witnessed the opening in 1434 of the first university in Sicily. Today, Catania is one of the main economic, touristic and educational centers, being an important hub of the technological industry, thus gaining the nickname of the "European Silicon Valley". 6

7 THE CATANIA WONDERFUL SURROUNDINGS The Peoples who settled in Sicily left through centuries a cultural and artistic heritage unique in the world. The Teatro Greco in Taormina, the Ortigia in Siracusa, home of Archimedes, one of the most important scientist and philosopher of all time, the active volcanoes as Etna, the paintings by Caravaggio and Antonello da Messina, the most beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean Seas, the unique wine and food tradition are just some of the features that made Sicily a tourist must. 7

9 AIRPORT The Catania Vincenzo Bellini Airport, the new international airport of Catania, is one of the top six airport in Italy, totally renewed in Located just at 3.7 Km away from the city center, this airport has a large departure area with 44 check-in desks and various computerized areas for self check-in. Passengers can easily enter the departures area through 11 boarding gates, to board comfortably to their own destinations. It is the busiest airport in Sicily with passengers in 2009, but in terms of domestic traffic it ranks at the 3rd place in Italy, after Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport and Linate Airport. 9
