1 Student Leadership Newsletter Volume IV Issue 1 Augusta Technical College February/March 2014 Congratulations to the Augusta Tech 2014 GOAL Winner Christina Clutter From left to right: GOAL Winner Christina Clutter, Finalist Giovanna Mustin, Augusta Tech President Terry Elam, Finalist Cassandra Sullivan and Finalist Rachel Kramer. Christina Clutter, an Occupational Therapy Assistant student at Augusta Technical College from Grovetown, has been named as the college's winner of the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership (GOAL). The announcement was made at the college's GOAL recognition meeting held in conjunction with The Optimist Club of Augusta's monthly meeting at Sixth at Watkins in Augusta. Clutter was chosen by a panel of local leaders over three other nominees for the award. The runners-up were Rachel Kramer, a Horticulture student; Giovanna Mustin, an Occupational Therapy Assistant student; and Cassandra Sullivan, a Cardiovascular Technology student. GOAL, a statewide program of the Technical College System of Georgia, honors excellence in academics and leadership among the state's technical college students. Local GOAL winners are selected at each of the state's 24 technical colleges as well as one Board of Regents college with a technical education division. The announcement of Clutter as the Augusta Technical College GOAL winner was made by David Arnold, Optimist Club officer and a 2014 GOAL judge. Clutter will now proceed to regional judging. All college GOAL winners will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Atlanta for two days in April. Nine regional finalists, three finalists from the three regions, will be announced in Atlanta in April A panel of leaders from the business, industry and government sectors will interview them and choose one to be the 2014 state GOAL winner and the recipient of the GOAL medallion. The grand prize also includes a new car, courtesy of Chevrolet, the statewide corporate sponsor of the GOAL program. "It is an honor to represent Augusta Technical College as the GOAL winner, and I am humbled by the adventure I am about to experience," said Clutter. Clutter is a military spouse with two children. She is also the Director of Autism Exchange, a member of the Occupational Therapy Assistant Club and Phi Theta Kappa.
2 Student Leadership Newsletter February/March 2014 Page 2 Congratulations to the Augusta Tech 2014 Rick Perkins Award Winner Margaret Crawford Margaret Crawford, instructor for Early Childhood Care and Education program on the Waynesboro/Burke County campus of Augusta Technical College, was selected from a group of nominated instructors to represent the college in the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction. It is a statewide program initiated by the Technical College System of Georgia to honor outstanding instructors in the system's 25 member institutions. Crawford is being honored for her dedication to and hard work in her department for 2013 instruction year and will be the 2014 representative. Each year, instructors are nominated by faculty, staff and students. The nominees then are interviewed by a panel of judges consisting of Augusta Tech's Board Members. The Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction honors technical education's most outstanding instructors. The award has been an ongoing statewide event since 1991 and is designed to recognize and honor technical college instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovations and leadership in their fields. Annually, all 25 technical colleges, plus the four Regents system schools with technical divisions, nominate an instructor to represent their colleges for the statewide honor. Nominees then compete on a regional basis. Crawford will compete with representatives from the Central Region of the Technical College System of Georgia. Winners from each technical college region will be announced and will then compete for the state honor in April. To be eligible for the award, instructors must be employed on a full-time basis for a minimum of three-years and have not participated in the region or state-level selection process in the last three years. The statewide recipient of the award serves as an ambassador and represents the Technical College System of Georgia. The recipient will travel statewide to promote technical education and the critical impact the system of technical colleges has on the overall economic health of Georgia.
