1 2016 Orientation Leader Application (Available in alternative formats upon request) Orientation Leaders (OLs), play a major role in the official beginning to a student s college career. These students will serve as role models, counselors, and leaders to first-year and transfer students at UGA. This dynamic group of students will welcome over 20,000 students and family members to campus during their tenure as an OL. Students in this position not only have a positive impact on the lives of the incoming students but they are challenged to develop their leadership skills and grow as a campus leader. These students will face tough obstacles that are built to encourage growth and development as an influential member of our campus community. All of this is done with an amazing team of your peers and the New Student Orientation Professional Staff. QUALIFICATIONS An applicant for 2016 Orientation Leader must: Be enrolled full-time at the University of Georgia as an undergraduate student currently and for the Spring and Fall of 2016 Be in good academic and judicial standing Maintain a minimum GPA of a 2.75 More importantly, an applicant should be someone with strong communication skills, genuine enthusiasm for the University of Georgia, a desire to learn and grow, and the ability to work well on a team. The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity Employer. RESPONSIBILITIES An Orientation Leader will be expected to do the following: Participate in ALL of the required dates. Serve as a resource to students and families during and after Orientation by answering questions, sharing information and personal anecdotes, and connecting them to campus resources. Serve as a group leader and discussion facilitator for students during each Orientation session. Live in the Orientation residence hall throughout the summer. Perform in skits and other presentations at Orientation. Assist new students with class registration during each Orientation session. Provide an engaging tour of campus to Orientation attendees that highlights the University s academic, athletic, and co-curricular opportunities as well as its history and traditions. 1
2 REQUIRED DATES The 2016 Orientation Leaders must be available for the following dates: January 15-17, 2016 Orientation Leader Retreat January - May, 2016 Spring training 3-5pm each Wednesday February 14, 21, and 27, 2016 SROW Prep Meetings March 10-13, 2016 Southern Regional Orientation Workshop in Greenville, NC May 20 - June 1, 2016 May Training June 1 - August 2, 2016 Summer Orientation August 9, 2016 Late Orientation for Fall Semester August 10, 2016 Freshman Welcome December 2016 and January 2017 Spring Semester 2017 Orientation (Specific dates TBD) **Any prospective applicant who is not available to participate in all of the trainings should not apply. SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAM Orientation for incoming Fall 2016 students includes a two-day session for first-year students and a one-day program for transfer students. A family program is held in conjunction with each of these orientation sessions. The first Orientation session begins on June 1 st and the last session concludes by August 2 th. Late Fall Semester Orientation will be held August 9 th. WORK HOURS AND SALARY The Summer Orientation work week for Orientation Leaders typically begins at 7:00 a.m. on Monday and concludes at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. There are occasional Sunday evening staff meetings. The commitment of time and energy is extensive. Therefore, Orientation Leaders will not be able to take classes or hold another job during the summer. Orientation Leaders must remain in full participation with each Summer Orientation session while the attendees are on campus, including meal-time. Compensation for participation in the Summer Orientation and Spring Orientation Programs will be $8.00 per hour. Pay is bi-weekly during the summer, and benefits will include standard access to the University Health Center and access to the Ramsey Student Center for Physical Activities. In addition, summer room expenses in the residence hall will be fully provided and Orientation Leaders will be provided with a five-day meal plan for use throughout the Summer Orientation program. APPLICATION All applications are to be completed electronically and ed to ugorient@uga.edu. All applications should be submitted with all supporting materials by October 12 st, 2015 at Noon. The selection process involves two stages: the first stage includes a group interview followed by a second stage of individual interviews for finalists. Group interviews will be October and individual interviews November 2-9. Applicants will be contacted via their UGA to schedule an interview. Please limit essays/stories to 500 words and videos/recordings to 150 seconds. If you make something that cannot be submitted through with Part I of your application, please bring it to Terrell Hall. Part I and II of the application must be submitted to New Student Orientation by Noon on Monday, October 12. This application is accurate to the best of my knowledge.
