3 Positions available on the 2015 LSA Committee This list appears in Regulation A of the LSA s Rules and Regulations: A. Composition of the Committee The Committee shall be comprised of (a) First Year Representatives: 1. Activities (2) 2. Careers (2) 3. Competitions (2) 4. Education (2) 5. Publications (2) Please note that some candidates may be elected into more than one role. In such a case, the candidate will be required to choose preferred position. 3
4 Introduction Since humble but lively beginnings over 17 years ago, the La Trobe Law Students Association ( LSA ) has developed into the largest and one of the most active student run organisations on campus. Whilst there is much to be gained from being on the committee (both personally and professionally), it is also a significant time commitment, and requires a lot of hard work. Therefore, this guide is designed to help you decide whether or not running for a position on the LSA is right for you. Please feel free to talk to the person currently in the position you are seeking or any other committee member before nominating. If you: Want to contribute to the life of law students in a meaningful way; Have a skill set applicable to one of the positions listed below; Can commit to a minimum of 10 hours per week; 1 Can work independently and in a team; Want unmatched opportunities to develop leadership abilities, as well as organisational and interpersonal skills; Are not just passionate about ideas, but are passionate about results; and Have a professional and mature outlook on work, You are encouraged to run for a position in the La Trobe Law Students Association committee! Working for the LSA : 1. Offers you an opportunity to make a difference by helping your fellow law students by providing relevant events, services and publications while also increasing your business, marketing, engagement, project management, governance, design, public speaking skills etc; 2. Gives you direct and tangible business experience to develop the commercial acumen necessary which is so valued in today s labour market; 3. Grants students direct access to the legal profession and its stakeholders; 4. Helps develop your professional network; and 5. Gives you access to training and personal development opportunities provided to club and societies representatives at the university. 1 Workload varies depending on position; please ensure you check the information relating to the position you are interested in. 4
5 Activities First Year Representative (2) As an Activities First Year Representative you will be actively involved with the planning and coordination of all the LSA social events the Activities portfolio runs throughout semester one and two. The Activities portfolio is responsible for the organisation and coordination of Law Camp, Maritime Cruise, Law Camp and other smaller social events throughout the year. Work very closely with the Director of Activities to coordinate various LSA Social Events Attend Activities meetings Attend a minimum of x1 office hour per week Ability to liaise with La Trobe Law School where appropriate Ability to liaise with organisations external to La Trobe where appropriate Ability to use your initiative in order to contribute to efficiency of the Committee throughout your term An interest in helping deliver effective Activities Events to students, including an eagerness for getting other students involved and encourage attendance at LSA events 5
6 Careers First Year Representative (2) As a Careers First Year Representative you will be actively involved with the planning and coordination of all careers events, presentations and information sessions that run throughout semester one and two. The Careers portfolio is responsible for planning Careers Connect Fair, Careers Week, Careers Cocktail Evening, as well as skills based workshops to prepare students for entering the job market. Work very closely with the Director of Careers to coordinate various LSA Careers Events Attend Careers meetings Attend a minimum of x1 office hour per week Ability to liaise with La Trobe Law School where appropriate Ability to liaise with organisations external to La Trobe where appropriate Ability to use your initiative in order to contribute to efficiency of the Committee throughout your term An interest in helping deliver effective Careers Events to students, including an eagerness for getting other students involved and encourage attendance at LSA events 6
7 Competitions First Year Representative (2) As a Competitions First Year Representative you will be actively involved with the planning and coordination of all internal and some external competitions that run throughout semester one and two. The Competitions portfolio is responsible for the coordination and planning of THE Senior and Junior Moots, Witness Examination, Client Interview, Negotiation, International Humanitarian Moot, Environmental Moot, as well as organising the Competitions Grand Final Night held at the Federal Circuit Court in May Work very closely with the Director of Competitions to coordinate numerous LSA Competitions Attend Competitions meetings Attend a minimum of x1 office hour per week Ability to liaise with La Trobe Law School where appropriate Ability to liaise with organisations external to La Trobe where appropriate Ability to use your initiative in order to contribute to efficiency of the Committee throughout your term An interest in helping the continued development of LSA Competitions, including an eagerness for getting other students involved and encourage attendance at LSA events 7
8 Education First Year Representative (2) As an Education First Year Representative you will be actively involved with the planning and coordination of information sessions and workshops, as well as key Educational Events that offer students insight into various aspects of the law. The Education portfolio is responsible for organising 101 how to workshops, exam preparation and wellbeing workshops, Annual Justice Speech, Women in the Law and Legal Scholar and Panel Speech, as well as small initiatives throughout the year that provide support for students during stressful periods. Work very closely with the Director of Education to coordinate various LSA Education Events Attend Education meetings Attend a minimum of x1 office hour per week Ability to liaise with La Trobe Law School where appropriate Ability to liaise with organisations external to La Trobe where appropriate Ability to use your initiative in order to contribute to efficiency of the Committee throughout your term An interest in helping deliver helpful events to students that assist them throughout their law degree, as well as an eagerness for getting other students involved and encourage attendance at LSA events 8
9 Publications First Year Representative (2) As a Publications First Year Representative you will be actively involved with the organising and production of numerous publications throughout the year, including the First Year Guide, Competition Guide, Careers Guide, as well as continued production of website content, including producing, sourcing and editing articles throughout the year (both law and non-law related). Work very closely with the Director of Publications to deliver various LSA Publications and website content Attend Publications meetings To liaise with La Trobe Law where appropriate To liaise with organisations external to La Trobe where appropriate To use your initiative in order to contribute to efficiency of the Committee throughout your term An interest in sourcing information relevant to law students and assisting in the production of content relevant to law students as well as an eagerness for getting other students involved and attending LSA events 9
