Flex Activities Fall 2013 Tuesday, August 20 th Location Activity SESSION #1: 9:00 am-12:00 pm New Faculty Orientation -Amber Casolari SESSION #2: 12:00-4:00 pm MTSC 107 Mathematics Discipline Meeting -Mary Legner The Mathematics Discipline of RCCD will be working on updating the Course Outline of Records and addressing other topics that are relevant to the discipline. Flex Activities Fall 2013 Wednesday, August 21 st Location Activity There are four workshop sessions to choose from. You are free to choose the workshops you wish to attend during each time block. Make sure to place your name on the workshop sign in sheets at each session to receive FLEX credit. Blackboard service pack 12 Q & A -Vincent Alonzo and Derek Moore In this session, the open campus guys will answer your questions about the new upgrade to Blackboard. Curriculum and CurricUNET -Greg Burchett Are you planning on developing curriculum? Do you need to modify your curriculum or work on program review? Your District Curriculum Committee is here to help. This discussion will provide an overview of the curriculum process, an introduction to CurricUNET, and offer advice and answer questions to help you with your curricular concerns. DL 409 Assisting Students in Distress: Connecting students in need to on and off campus resources. - Courtney Carpenter When a student in need comes to you for help, do you know where to send them? Do you know how to have that difficult conversation with them? Or do you feel just as lost as your student? This flex day workshop will discuss resources on and off campus for students in need and how to have an open and frank conversation with your students about their difficulties in life. The New Left Governments in Latin America: Meaning for Americans -Ward Schinke This presentation will contrast the governments of Venezuela, Bolivia and Ecuador to Colombia and discuss the implications for U.S. foreign policy. Screencasting Basics -Mr. Techie (a.k.a. Tony Rizo) In this workshop participants will learn how to capture images and video on your computer s screen to use in the classroom.

I Sing The Library Electric: RCC Library's LAMP Databases Offering So Much To So Many! -Steve Brewster and Shannon Hammock Some of the basic and added-value features of selected LAMP databases with all their promise and potential - are highlighted. Writing Center -Denise Kruziengo-Muro Denise Kruizenga-Muro will walk participants through the WRC's web site and instructor guide and will answer questions about both working in and creating assignments for students in the WRC. This workshop is intended for full- and part-time instructors in English, Reading, and ESL. International Education -Jan Schall Are you interested in teaching your courses in the International Education/Study Abroad Program for the Riverside Community College District? In this session Professor Schall will describe the available semester programs, the application and interview process, and the requisites and responsibilities of participating in Education Abroad. The fall semester venue in Florence, Italy has been in place for nineteen years and our new spring semester program is located in London, England. SI Faculty meeting -Rebecca Moon-Stone This is a meeting for all instructors teaching in the supplemental instructor program for Fall Show Me The Money! -Richard Keeler and Colleen Molko Learn about current trends and emphases in federal funding as well as strategies for successful grant writing! Retirement Savings -Kevin Kirkpatrick from CalSTRS Thinking about your retirement savings? Come and learn about your 403B and 457 plans. This workshop is available to all members, certificated and classified alike. CalSTRS is excited to tell you about the supplemental savings plans it offers under the collective banner of Pension2. This presentation details how Pension2 functions differently than other vendors retirement savings plans and how it can help you achieve your individual retirement

DL 409 Glenn Hunt Center Room DL 401 Bridging the Gap: How to Keep Standards High But Assist ALL Learners? -Tonya Huff, James Knieriem, Elisabeth Thompson-Eagle, & Virginia White This community of faculty has examined this question over the last two academic years. In this session, each member will discuss their findings and explain the experiments they attempted in their own classes to keep standards high. Health Care Options -Pauline Castro, DHR In this session you will learn about the three health plan choices available to RCCD employees. Further, you will learn about your Dental plan, life insurance, and AFLAC services. SESSION #4: 1:00-4:00 pm Active Shooter For Campus Personnel -Sherry Stone This training is designed to inform staff, faculty and students of Riverside Community College District of strategies that can be used to deter, detect, delay and possibly defeat an active shooter. It includes lessons learned from past active shooter and terrorist incidents. Participants will receive valuable information that will increase their effectiveness and may reduce the district s potential for liability. Participants will be able to: Discuss strategies to detect, deter, and delay violent incidents. Discuss the lessons learned from different critical incidents on school campuses Define law enforcement priorities during an active shooter incident Discuss critical preparations and response techniques for campus personnel and students. We will also look at effective and efficient methods for assessing student work that will not only allow you to assign grades, but methods that will promote additional learning for your students. Throughout the day, you will learn not just techniques (which will be very useful), but also learn how to apply criteria for choosing strategies that will best achieve your course objectives and complement your teaching style. By the end of the session you will have a plan for implementing at least one new strategy and a method for assessing the learning that results. Warning: This session will include demonstrations, practical examples, and ideas for implementing new ideas for teaching and learning in your own courses.
