5 ELAC Spring 2010 Start at ELAC Transfer to any University! Transferring from ELAC to Whittier College Transfer Tips from former ELAC student 1. I cannot stress the importance of taking the initial steps with meeting with Gabriel Chabran, the transfer coordinator at Whittier College and taking the tour to see what the campus is like and how everything works. I found my first visits to Whittier to be extremely helpful when first beginning to start thinking about transferring. I cannot stress that point enough. 2. Also another important aspect in taking the proper steps in preparing to transfer by building a solid foundation for yourself. What I am referring to is equipping yourself with the right skills at ELAC such as selfdiscipline, a strong commitment to your work ethic, and of course good time management skills. 3. To me, Whittier College personifies the ideas of strong critical thinking skills, as well as fostering crucial curriculum with an emphasis on writing. 4. My first semester has been very rewarding with a strong sense of self complication. Whittier College is a very communal place in the sense that it's very tight knit. The students, staff and Professors are all so personable and attentive, not to mention that they are accessible and willing to help out whenever you need it. From East Los & Beyond Transfer Tony I began my time at ELAC with the mind set of taking a couple of classes at a time and trying to do better than I had in High School. I didn t really understand the importance of getting my own ambitions together. I ended up not taking my classes serious because I was told what to take and I had no real understanding as to why. Eventually I ended up dropping out of college and decided to work, but after getting a dose of what 7 years of working at a good job, but with heavy labor at UPS; I decided to go back to school so that I could make a living using my mind rather than my giant muscles. JK. After redeeming myself by becoming a proficient student and getting involved with some of the resources at ELAC; I was able to see myself apply to some big name colleges. And because of that I now get to stake my claim as a genuine Trojan at USC; Yay!! The truth of the matter is college is not like high school because you really have to take your future in your own hands; nobody is going to do it for you. It took me some time to find my focus. If I could give anyone who is presently as lost as I was some advice, it would be to start finding some direction. So here you go: 1. If you re not sure what you want to do visit the Career Center for an assessment test this may give you some general ideas. Also pay attention to the common things that you do. Ex.-if you watch a great deal of the discovery channel you might be a science major. 2. Visit the transfer center when you decide on a major and they will give show you what schools offer your major, what classes to take for your major, and which college representatives visit the ELAC campus. 3. Visit the Counseling Office; this is the best way you can use the information from the Transfer Center and have a discussion with your counselor, versus having a consultation. This is especially important since Counseling appointments are only 30 minutes. Sincerely, Transfer Tony 5
