1 Introduction to Personality Psychology 2320, Spring 2013 TTh 5:30-6:45 Arts and Science 110 (Allen Auditorium) Instructor: Wendy Slutske, Ph.D. Office: 212A McAlester Hall Office Hours: by appointment (best way to contact) Teaching Assistant: Alex Dopp, M.A. Office: 221 Psychology Office Hours: by appointment (best way to contact) Course Description: This course is intended to be an overview of major theoretical perspectives and contemporary research in personality psychology. Class format will primarily be lecture. The overlap between lecture and reading will be variable. You are responsible for both sets of information for exams. This class will also give you an opportunity to complete a variety of measures of personality characteristics. Textbook: Funder, D.C. (2013). The Personality Puzzle (6 th edition), New York: W.W. Norton & Co. (There is also an e-book version of the text). Exams. Exams will be multiple choice. Five examinations will be administered, though only 4 will count toward your final grade (25% each). The first four exams will be non-cumulative, whereas the optional fifth exam will be. Your worst exam grade will be dropped. No makeup exams will be given. Because you may drop an exam, a missed exam will simply be considered your dropped grade. If you miss two exams, the second will be given an F. Grading. Grades are assigned as percentages of the highest total attained in the class. This means that the curve will depend on the highest score obtained in the class. Everyone can do well, if everyone obtains a grade close to the highest in the class. (I am under no obligation to give out bad grades someone is guaranteed to get an A, but no one has to get an F). Letter grades are assigned as follows: 93% and up of highest grade = A 73-77% of highest grade = C 90-92% of highest grade = A % of highest grade = C % of highest grade = B % of highest grade = D % of highest grade = B 63-67% of highest grade = D 80-82% of highest grade = B % of highest grade = D % of highest grade = C+ Less than 59% = F last revised: 1/22/2013 1

5 Academic Dishonesty: The office of the Provost has asked the faculty to remind students of the following: Academic dishonesty is considered to be an offense against the University, and I am obligated to report any incident to the Provost (or Vice Provost for Academic Affairs) and to inform the Department Chair. Academic dishonesty includes (but is not limited to): cheating or assisting someone else in academic dishonesty, plagiarism, unauthorized possession of class materials (e.g., tests, reserve materials), and unauthorized changing of one's grade. Please see Section 6.01 of the Collected Rules and Regulations which are published in the M Book for more details. Academic honesty is fundamental to the activities and principles of a university. All members of the academic community must be confident that each person's work has been responsibly and honorably acquired, developed, and presented. Any effort to gain an advantage not given to all students is dishonest whether or not the effort is successful. The academic community regards academic dishonesty as an extremely serious matter, with serious consequences that range from probation to expulsion. When in doubt about plagiarism, paraphrasing, quoting, or collaboration, consult the course instructor. Special Accommodations: If you need accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please inform me immediately. Please see me privately after class, or at my office. To request academic accommodations (for example, a notetaker), students must also register with the Office of Disability Services, S5 Memorial Union, It is the campus office responsible for reviewing documentation provided by students requesting academic accommodations, and for accommodations planning in cooperation with students and instructors, as needed and consistent with course requirements. For other MU resources for students with disabilities, click on "Disability Resources" on the MU homepage. Academic Inquiry, Course Discussion and Privacy University of Missouri System Executive Order No. 38 lays out principles regarding the sanctity of classroom discussions at the university. The policy is described fully in Section of the Collected Rules and Regulations. In this class, students may make audio or video recordings of course activity unless specifically prohibited by the faculty member. However, the redistribution of audio or video recordings of statements or comments from the course to individuals who are not students in the course is prohibited without the express permission of the faculty member and of any students who are recorded. Students found to have violated this policy are subject to discipline in accordance with provisions of Section of the Collected Rules and Regulations of the University of Missouri pertaining to student conduct matters. last revised: 1/22/2013 5
