2 2 Background Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) program Public Health-Seattle & King County CPPW Coalition & Healthy Eating Active Living $75,000 grant awarded to PSRC to provide updated technical guidance to incorporate planning approaches that promote physical activity in local comprehensive plans. Focus on 7 CPPW-funded cities in King County: Burien Des Moines Federal Way Redmond SeaTac Snoqualmie
3 CPPW Grant Tasks 3 Develop Toolkit detailing land use approaches to promote physical activity (Task 1) Incorporate Toolkit information into update of PSRC Plan Review Manual (Task 2) Use new data sets (Task 3) to influence local plan and policy revisions & set regional bike/ped priorities. Explore health as a metric in project prioritization discussion (Task 4).
4 Purpose of Toolkit 4 Explore practices and tools that promote and improve physical, social, and mental health. Online resource for jurisdictions with tools to promote physical activity appropriate to local conditions. Address specific barriers & opportunities to bicycle & pedestrian transport. Foundation for update to Regional Bicycle & Pedestrian Implementation Strategy (2003).

6 Alignment to V2040 Implementation 6 Implementation Actions: Regional Design Best Practices: DP-Action-10 incorporating design into planning processes will include model codes Land Use, Mobility & Health Toolkit: DP-Action-11 explore land use and planning practices and tools that promote and improve physical, social, and mental health. Nonmotorized Planning T-Action-19: guidelines and criteria for local jurisdictions in developing bicycle and pedestrian components of comprehensive plans

Survey of Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) funded cities to identify tools that have the most impact among varying local conditions. 3. Final Draft Toolkit 4. Promotion & Outreach
8 Toolkit Form & Function 8 Update & organize policy recommendations into user-friendly resource for local jurisdictions. New sample policies & provisions with reference to expanding national examples & culturallyappropriate approaches to physical activity. Short-Term Approaches: Highlight effective & immediate low-cost projects & programs. Long-Term Approaches: Outline model planning, policies, projects, & programs.
