1 Overview This dashboard presents our performance in the new A&E clinical quality indicators. These 8 indicators will allow you to see the quality of care being delivered by our A&E department, and reflect the experience and safety of our patients. It will also allow us to review, and continuously improve the emergency services which we provide. Summary of performance for last complete month: November 212 Initial Assessment Treatment Total time in A&E Patient arrives at A&E 95% of patients waited under 24 minutes from arrival to initial assessment On average, patients waited 69 minutes from arrival to treatment 95% of patients waited under 326 minutes from arrival to departure 95% of patients not requiring admission to hospital waited under 24 minutes from arrival to departure 95% of patients who needed admission to hospital waited under 473 minutes from arrival to departure Re-attendance 5.3% of attendances this month were unplanned reattendances Left without being seen 2.6% of attendances this month left the department before being seen Legend Successfully meets performance threshold Does not meet threshold Service Experience NOTE: This report currently does not include figures from the Urgent Care Centre on the University Hospital of Leicester's campus. 2 A&E Attendances Count of A&E Attendances Average Number of Attendances When a patient attends A&E one of their concerns is waiting times. Delays in receiving the care you receive can be worse when the department is very busy. As we can see the number of attendances varies from month to month Nov-11 Dec-11 Jan-12 Feb-12 Mar-12 Apr-12 May-12 Jun-12 Jul-12 Aug-12 Sep-12 Oct-12 Nov-12 Percentage of patients whose A&E Attendance Was Completed Within Four Hours Percentage of patients seen within 4 hours Target 12.% 1.% 8.% We understand that patients don't want to spend too long in A&E, which is why the trust aims to ensure that 95% of patients should either be admitted to hospital, or discharged home within 4 hours of arrival. This is in line with the national target. 6.% 4.% 2.%.%

3 Time to Initial Assessment (Ambulance Arrivals) Time to Initial Assessment (95th percentile value) When patients come to A&E by ambulance with a major problem they might need urgent treatment. It is therefore important that the wait for seeing a nurse or doctor is as short as possible. Therefore 95% of patients should be seen by a nurse or doctor within 15 minutes of arrival. There is a data quality issue regarding the data capture for this indicator which may show an inaccurate adverse position. Time From Arrival to Treatment Time From Arrival to Treatment (Median Values) For many conditions it is important that patients receive an early treatment. On average patients should have a full assessment and start their treatment by a doctor or specialist nurse within 6 minutes of arrival

4 Total Time In Department - Patients who are admitted into hospital Total Time In Department - Patients who were discharged We understand that patients don't want to spend too long in A&E, which is why 95% of patients should either be admitted to hospital, or discharged home within 4 hours of arrival. There will be a small minority of patients who will have a clinical need to be in A&E for longer than 4 hours, but nobody should be in A&E longer than 6 hours. 5 6.% 5.% 4.% 3.% Left Without Being Seen % Of Patients Who Left Without Being Seen If patients are waiting an unreasonable time for the care that they need they will often leave A&E and seek care elsewhere. No more than 5% of patient should leave before being seen. Our left without being seen rate is very low, and has been consistently under 3% over the last year. 2.% 1.%.% Unplanned Reattendance 7.% 6.% 5.% 4.% Percentage of unplanned re-attendances There are a number of reasons why patients have to make an unplanned return to A&E. This indicator states that no more than 5% of patients should return to A&E within a week. We are looking at the reasons why patients return, and trying to reduce the need for this to happen. 3.% 2.% 1.%.%
