Die storm wat omstreeks 16:30 in al sy mag met hael uitgebreek het, en daarna met swaar neerslae het sy spoor van verwoesting in Phalaborwa gelos. Kraglyne was vir etlike ure in die hele dorp leweloos en het op plekke eers weer 19:00 aangekom. Rukwinde het o a 'n dak van 'n huis in Selati straat afgeruk en talle huise se dakke het gelek weens die swaar neerslae. Groenskool se lapa is egter verwoes nadat 'n tamaai koorsboom deur die rukwinde ontwortel is en op die lapa geval het. Koorsbome is ook ontwortel by n nabygeleë myn en groot skade is aangerig aan die motorafdak parkering. Die staaldakke het meegegee nadat rukwinde dit afgewaai het. Dit blyk dat n bushalte daar ook deur n boom plat geval is. Die Groenskool se lapa is deur n koorsboom vernietig nadat dié boom op hom geval het Nog n boom het ook op een van die kantoorgeboue neergeval. Die weerdiens voorspel 'n baie nat Oktober vir die noordelike gedeelte van SA. Die eerste lente reën is verwelkom, afgesien van die skade wat agtergelaat is. 2 PAGE 2 PHALABORWA HERALD - Friday 7 October 2011 NEWS ANCYL member can shoot people for disrespect By: Given Sebashe The national ANC Youth League treasurer, Pule Mabe, is in hot water for allegedly assaulting his former high school mate at a tavern in Namakgale on Friday. It is alleged that Mabe, originally from Namakgale, assaulted Tshepo Nakana at Oddo's tavern for calling him a name he did not approve of. Nakana told the Herald that Mabe entered the tavern with men who appeared to be his bodyguards. He said that he called him a name they used to call him at Lepato High School, but that didn't go down well with Mabe. According to Nakana, he called Mabe "Mokolekwa". "He told me that he did not approve of the name and I apologised. Despite my apologies, Mabe started assaulting me, hitting me with his open hand more than six times in full view of other patrons and his bodyguards", said Nakana. Nakana alleges that Mabe claimed he (Nakana) was sent by President Jacob Zuma's camp to provoke him. However, Mabe allegedly told Nakana that he had to assault him otherwise his bodyguards were going to do it on his behalf. "He also told me that he could shoot me right there because of my disrespect". Nakana alleges that Mabe bought him six ciders as a way of apologising. Nakana only opened a case of intimidation and common assault on Sunday. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, confirmed that a case had been opened. Mabe could not be reached for a comment at the time of going to print. R15 million loss due to go-slow By: Given Sebashe The Village Reef operation at the Consolidated Murchison mine claims it has lost R15 million due to the go-slow by its workers last month. Workers affiliated to the National Union of Mineworkers were allegedly involved in an unprotected strike last month, apparently to force management to pay each employee R of overtime. General Manager, Lebo Marumole, said the go-slow has cost the company immensely and as a result, they have appointed a contractor to keep production going. "We have appointed a contractor to get some production going. This will, of course, be a temporary arrangement", said Marumole. The workers were expected to produce tons of antimony a month which, according to the company's calculations, was 50% lower in July than the agreed target. Taxi driver, passenger die in accident By: Given Sebashe A taxi driver and a passenger were instantly killed in an accident near Ngulube Lodge on the R71 on Saturday, leaving one other critically injured. It is alleged that the taxi, which was travelling towards Phalaborwa, hit the rear wheel of a truck s trailer that was travelling in the opposite direction. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, said the taxi driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. The injured passenger was admitted at Maphutha Malatji Hospital in a serious condition. A case of culpable homicide has been opened and investigations continue. Man killed for ritual purposes A missing woman from Topville in Namakgale was found dead on Tuesday by a p a s s e r b y. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, said the woman, Bongani Hlungwani was found by a passerby in a ditch next to Refentse Primary School. By: Given Sebashe A man was murdered and his genitals chopped off allegedly for ritual purposes over the weekend in Namakgale. The body of Pieter Matsane was discovered at his house in a pool of blood by his neighbours on Sunday. Namakgale Police Spokesperson, Constable Lucy Sekgotodi, said Matsane's neighbours got worried about his whereabouts as they had not seen him since Friday. Sekgotodi said the neighbours decided to check on Matsane, but were welcomed by flies and a dreadful smell instead. "Neighbours described Matsane as a man who would check up on them everyday and were thus worried when they didn't see him during the weekend. The discovery was made by a neighbour who had just come from a church service at about 16:00", said Sekgotodi. His body was covered in blankets and his genitals were cut off, however - the police did not find any object suspected to have been used on Matsane. It is alleged that the perpetrators could have gained access to Matsane's house quite easily - because his house doesn't have doors or e l e c t r i c i t y. Matsane was residing alone at the time of this incident. His younger brother, Centy Matsane, said the death has left the family traumatised because they had just buried their mother last month. "I last saw Pieter last week when we were cleaning my late mother's house and we were a happy family. We did not expect him to die like this and we hope that the police find the perpetrators", said Centy. A case of murder is being investigated. Missing woman found murdered A four year old girl was allegedly raped by a mentally ill man in Lulekani on Friday. It is alleged that the man lured the girl to an incomplete house structure to give her sweets, but raped her instead. According to Lulekani Police Spokesperson, Constable Nkhensani Mabasa, the man - who "The woman was half naked and we suspect that she might have been raped before she was murdered", said Sekgotodi. Hlungwani was last seen on Friday by her f a m i l y. A case of murder has been opened. No one has been arrested as yet. Mentally ill man in on case of rape is the girl's neighbour, allegedly summoned the girl while she was playing alone outside her house. Mabasa said the girl told her grandmother during a bath that she was hurt by the man in her genitals. The man was arrested a few hours later. Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality has intensified its programme of cutting off municipal service to those who do not pay their bills. Acting Municipal Manager, Dr Stimela Sebashe, said "we are going to disconnect anyone, including businesses, that do not pay for municipal services". Sebashe said the programme was rolled out on Monday. "We have already dispatched a team which will go around in all areas including Namakgale and Lulekani. We have sent letters to all residents informing them about the disconnection of services if payments are not made", said Sebashe. Sebashe said the municipality has a legal responsibility and obligation to collect all the money due to it. Mayor Anna Sono, recently said the municipality coffers have run dry as a result of non-payment. Sono was speaking at a mayoral imbizo in Namakgale, where she gave her progress report on matters since she took the office. In Namakgale and Lulekani, residents owing over R to the municipality are still receiving municipal services completely free. This has angered many residents in town who have had their services cut off in the blink of an eye if they don't pay in time. However, Sebashe said that all this was going to change. Du Toit s case postponed By: Given Sebashe The rape case of local businessman, André du Toit, has been postponed once again in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court. Du Toit appeared in court on Monday to face a charge of rape brought against him by Victor Mokgalaka. The case was postponed to October 11. Meanwhile, two men accused of hijacking Du Toit, Victor Mokgalaka and Jintro Mhlongo, appeared in the Phalaborwa Magistrate's Court. Their case was also postponed, to December 12. Six trees were planted at Selematsela Drop-In Centre and five were planted at Lekang Day Care Centre. Honorary ranger and project manager, Mary Ramaila Raganya, said the youth felt the need to partake in projects that benefit their communities. "This is one of the project that will help make a difference at the two centres, because they had no trees in their yard", said Raganya. Animal cruelty increases drastically Junior rangers of Bohwa Eco-Tourism Youth Project planted trees at Selematsela Drop-In Centre and Lekang Day Care Centre last Saturday as part of celebrating Arbor and Heritage Day. Phalaborwa SPCA Chairperson, Marianna Seyffert writes: The Phalaborwa SPCA has seen an increase in severe animal cruelty cases both in town and in the surrounding rural areas recently. This is a real concern and has become a priority for the Phalaborwa SPCA. We would like to urge citizens to assist us in the fight against cruelty by reporting any cases as a matter of urgency. It is not just the SPCA that can follow up these cases, a charge can also be laid at the Police in terms of the Animals Protection Act. Anyone can lay charges in terms of the Animals Protection Act, so in areas where there is no SPCA, the police can investigate and proceed with charges. If there is a welfare organisation in the area other than the SPCA, they too can handle charges. Animal cruelty is defined as any act that prohibits the 'five freedoms', namely;: freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury or disease, freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress. We urge the public to be our eyes and ears and not be afraid to come forward with information. Above all, do not hesitate to give an affidavit which counts as evidence. It's no good saying that something was witnessed "but I don't want to get involved". Also, be respectful of legal procedures. They may appear cumbersome or to be causing delays, but cases can be lost because procedure wasn't followed exactly. Removing or confiscating an animal without the legal procedure being followed means the whole case could be lost - the last thing we want. Contact the SPCA office on / to report incidences of animal cruelty.
