2 WELCOME MEBA is held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, Chairman of Dubai Airports, and Chairman & Chief Executive, Emirates Airlines & Group MEBA 2010 was a great success attracting over 13 percent more trade visitors than the previous show, the majority of whom came from the Middle East and North Africa. The MENA region has a high percentage of high net-worth individuals and a growing number of corporations which understand the speed of business in a connected world. However, regional traditions prevail and the Arabian way of doing business is linked to its strong sense of hospitality which relies on personal contact to forge business relationships, and that s where private aviation comes to the fore, in a region spread across two continents. My colleagues on the board and members of the Middle East Business Aviation Association are confident that we can build on the success of preceding shows to ensure that MEBA in 2012 will be an event not to be missed by anyone who seriously wants to do business in the region. 4 THE MIDDLE EAST IN CONTEXT Expanding fleets Saudia Private Aviation (SPA) plans to expand its fleet of eight aircraft to around 40 by 2020 in order to cater to the growing demand for business aircraft to and from Saudi Arabia. Abu Dhabi based AJA has announced the expected delivery of two further Airbus aircraft in 2011 bringing the total fleet size to eight. We re championing the UAE as a business aviation centre and plan to have a fleet of 13 heavy jets within the next four years, says AJA s Dr Mark Pierotti. Shows such as MEBA are a great way for us to showcase our products. It can literally be a case of see, buy and fly in the Middle East market, which is the world s most important for top-of-the-line and wide-body corporate jets. John Leahy Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus Speaking prior to the MEBA show opening, market analyst Brian Foley noted that, of about 550 business jets based in the Middle East, nearly 90 per cent are mid- or large-size jets. This is significant, as the worldwide average is closer to 60 per cent and the purchase of larger jets it is a measure of utility, not just luxury and prestige. A growing market Stephen Taylor, president of Boeing s business jet operation expects sales figures to accelerate as its new twin-aisle planes are marketed to the region s high-flying customers. Traditionally the Middle East has been a third of our business, and the twin aisles are at a higher price point the Middle East now becomes our primary region, he says. From a dollars point of view, our focus really is about the Middle East. In a recent report, the global business research and consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan said the Middle East region will need more than 400 business aircraft by 2018, of which more than 200 would be needed by 2015, valued at some US$3.89 billion. The next few months will result in a substantial amount of business from our talks with customers here at the show. The region s growth in the aviation sector with new airports and upgrades coming online are excellent news for us. Haroon Haider Senior Manager, TDH Visions Demand for facilities A new private aviation terminal is to be built at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. With an estimated number of 170 privately-owned jets, domestic travel alone would keep Saudi Arabia s key destinations busy. The business and private aviation market has a total of nearly 16,000 private aircraft movements a year. ExecuJet Middle East is partnering with Qatar s Al Faisal Holdings to create a new facility in the emirate. Top quality aviation services are in demand in Qatar and the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council states, says Al Faisal s owner, HH Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani. Al Bateen Executive Airport in Abu Dhabi is undergoing extensive redevelopment as it prepares to double its annual movements to more than 12,000 by It posted an 18 per cent increase in commercial aircraft movements in the first quarter of 2011 over the same period in MEBA was an extremely wellreceived event.
