Research Interests and philosophy Emotions and affect Discrete emotions in the workplace Envy, jealousy, firgun (happy for the other s good fortune) Fairness in organizations The interface of emotions and fairness perceptions The dispositional basis of job attitudes My major research interests concern human emotions and their influence on motivation and behavior. I primarily study discrete emotions. Within this broad interest area, I have several research programs. First, I study unpleasant (envy) and pleasant (being happy for - firgun) emotional reactions to the good fortune of others. Second, I study jealousy as an emotional reaction to others who might pose a threat to one s power base. This is a novel perspective that differs from the common study of jealousy, which has traditionally focused exclusively on romantic contexts. Third, I am interested in various topics related to emotions. Among those are basic issues related to the study of emotion (e.g., the issue of positive and negative emotions, emotions and justice), and emotions at various levels of analysis as motivating collective behavior. Lastly, I am interested in the dispositional basis 8
9 for job attitudes, examining how dispositions influence the stability in job attitudes. My research philosophy emphasizes using multiple methods and studies to study the same research question. I also tend to publish multiple-study articles that enable me to examine a research topic from various angles. As an Organizational Psychologist, I focus most of my research on the organizational and work contexts. At the same time, I believe my research is informative for social psychologists in general. Overall, my research has both academic and applied impact. 9
