5 The Course Message from the Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology Welcome to UTS and congratulations on taking the step of furthering your studies through one of our postgraduate programs. In our rapidly evolving, increasingly urbanised and globally connected environment, whatever your field of engineering, the future will see you using emerging technologies to solve new and increasingly complex problems. A productive leader within such a setting needs to ensure the currency of their technical skills while resolving issues characteristic in a management environment. UTS is a practical, innovative university that recognises the vital role we play in preparing graduates to meet the changing needs of business, industry, government and the community. The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) focuses on the intersection of engineering, technology and management, providing a continuing development path for engineers or nontechnical professionals to develop and expand their managerial capabilities in parallel to their technical expertise. As one of Australia s most popular postgraduate courses in engineering management studies, the MEM program has been offered in Hong Kong since Hundreds of local MEM graduates have had the opportunity to enhance the particular management skills they require to take their career to the next level. I wish you every success in your studies and future career. Professor Ian Burnett Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology 33

11 Outline of Subjects JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING This subject develops understanding of rational decision aids in the light of modern descriptive theories of judgment, choice and decision in organizations. The methods of management science, decision analysis and judgment analysis are presented, and models of individual, group and strategic decision making are critically assessed. Drawing on the insights of psychology, sociology and management science, this subject aims to inform you about the many facets of good judgment associated with decision-making ECONOMIC EVALUATION This subject deals with the application of economic concepts to engineering decision making. Main topics include: Macroeconomic issues and policies; micro-economic market theory; theory of the firm; project evaluation and cost-benefit analysis, intangibles and risk Risk Management in Engineering This subject develops students capability to identify, assess, improve and limit risk in the management and practice of engineering through the application of concepts and tools of risk engineering. On completion, students are able to identify hazards in an engineering project and design an appropriate risk management strategy APPLIED FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT This subject introduces students to the basics of cost control for project management. A project plan is created and populated with material and labour costs. A chart of accounts is then created for the project and accounting transactions are entered to demonstrate the double entry accounting system. The project is tracked over a series of months to create an income statement. The individual project is then consolidated into the company accounts to show the effect on the company s income statement, balance sheet and cash flow statements. The concepts of project budgeting and cost accumulation systems are introduced QUALITY PLANNING AND ANALYSIS Quality is one of the main success factors for organisations, whether they operate in manufacturing or service and transactional sectors. A sound quality management system, based on modern and up-to-date quality planning and analysis tools and techniques, reduces rejects, warranty claims and the need for costly rework. It helps to preserve customer goodwill and builds a brand loyalty based on objective criteria rather than illusions. Topics include: semantics of risk and hazard; risk as a social construct; principles of risk management; risk engineering; integrating risk controls within the engineering process; risk perception, risk communication and the acceptability of risk; legal principles relating to engineering risks; risk identification and assessment; hierarchy of risk control; risk benefit analysis; positive risk; and quantitative and qualitative risk assessment methods. 9
12 49069 LEADERSHIP & RESPONSIBILITY This subject develops an understanding of the role of engineering managers as responsible leaders in organisations. It focuses on the need to work through other managers and leaders, not only subordinates and supervisors. The subject provides a comprehensive review of leadership theory. It teaches that there exist many complex facets of leadership and emphasises the belief that one should not accept a position of trust without accepting the responsibility that goes with it. However, the art of leadership cannot be learned solely from books or virtual cafes, it needs to be experienced and practised face-to-face. A central teaching element of this subject is class-based activities that require engagement, motivation, critical thinking, verbal communication, group participation and performance under time pressure ADVANCED PROJECT MANAGEMENT This subject covers advanced topics in project management with emphasis on contemporary issues in the delivery of IT solutions to the business. It considers human and organizational aspects of project management, the importance of project governance, the changing nature of project management and the role of the project manager in the global business environment ENGINEERING PROJECT PREPARATION This subject provides students with the opportunity to learn and understand different methods that can be undertaken to successfully complete an engineering professional project or a graduate research project. In this subject students are expected to develop specialised knowledge and attributes that demonstrate their preparedness for further learning or high level professional practice while undertaking a project. Students are expected to use this knowledge to identify gaps and prepare a project proposal related to their field of study or major. Students then communicate their learning through written assignments and a final report encompassing literature review and a preliminary project proposal ENGINEERING GRADUATE PROJECT This subject provides students with the opportunity to execute a substantial research or professional project related to their discipline or field of study. In this subject students are expected to develop specialised knowledge and attributes that demonstrate their preparedness for further learning or high-level professional practice. Students are expected to communicate the project outcomes through a report and a reflective essay at the end of the semester. 10
