2 DIVISION OF NURSING Staff of the school The School has an international profi le of staff who have a range of academic and professional qualifi cations, research interests and clinical experience. Academic staff are actively involved in teaching, research and developing nursing practice in Hong Kong and working collaboratively with colleagues from local hospitals and community agencies. Programme The Programme is clinically based and has been designed to provide graduate nurses with the opportunity of developing specialist, research-based practice at an advanced level in a range of clinical settings., formerly the Department of Nursing, was established in the Faculty of Medicine in It was the fi rst university department of nursing in Hong Kong. The mission of the School is to excel in teaching and research and in the promotion of the highest standards of nursing practice.

3 Programme Objectives Admission Requirements The programme will enable students to: develop as an advanced practitioner in a particular clinical area; initiate innovation and manage change in practice at an advanced level; influence the development of policy in nursing; act as an advisor and consultant to different levels of nursing staff; conduct supervised, clinical research. Clinical Specialties include Acute Care, Critical Care, Oncology/Palliative Care, Community & Public Health, Gerontology & Long Term Care, Mental Health, Midwifery and Obstetrics & Gynaecology. Graduated from a recognised university and obtained a Bachelor s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; OR Graduated from an honours programme of a recognised university with a Bachelor s degree, normally achieving an average grade of not lower than B in undergraduate courses; OR Completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree; AND Registered nurses normally with two years post-registration experience. Applicants with degrees awarded by overseas universities, distance learning or by completing a curriculum of short duration may be required to provide an assessment report from the Hong Kong Council of Academic Accreditation (HKCAA) on the level of qualifications obtained. English Language Proficiency & Student IT Proficiency Requirement All applicants must fulfil the English Language Proficiency Requirement as stipulated by the Graduate School before being considered for admission. All students are required to pass the IT Proficiency Test before they graduate. Please refer to the homepage of the Graduate School for details of such requirements. Mode of Study A fast track part-time programme consolidated into six terms over two calendar years. A range of approaches to facilitate student learning are used which include lectures, seminar presentation and workshops. A team building workshop provides an important focus for student learning in the first term of the programme. The Chinese University of Hong Kong 3

4 Programme Structure Year 1 Taught Courses Advanced Nursing Practice I The aim of this course is to develop a foundation for advanced nursing practice. The major emphasis is on health assessment and the development of knowledge and skills necessary to provide evidence-based and therapeutic nursing assessment. Topics covered in the course include a critique of health assessments models and tools, tools to assess the physical, physiological, socio-cultural aspects of client need and models and tools in family and community assessment. Students will be required to apply advanced knowledge, critical thinking and principles of scientific investigation to substantiate practice in their clinical specialty. Research Methods I The aim of this research methods course is to enable students to extend their understanding of the role of research in the development of nursing knowledge with the focus on advanced nursing practice. This will involve analyzing the contribution of evidence-based practice as well as other approaches to knowledge development. The course will further develop the students knowledge of research methodology by focusing on topics such as the evaluation of research designs, appraising the evidence in nursing research and ethical issues. Critical reviews of the literature in a topic relevant to the students clinical specialty provide an important focus for the course. Advanced Nursing Practice II The aim of this course is to enable students to further develop their skills in clinical decisionmaking and implementation of evidence-based practice interventions in their relevant clinical specialties. Topics include communication and counselling, health promotion strategies, psychosocial and sexual interventions, support groups, rehabilitation programmes as well as complementary and alternative therapies. Students will be expected to demonstrate their skills in clinical decision-making and implementation of evidence-based practice in their relevant clinical specialty in the assignment designed for this course. Research Methods II This course aims to extend and deepen students knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methodology. It enables students to develop research skills and a research proposal that have practical application for innovations in health care and scholarly understanding of nursing practice. The focus is on in-depth analysis and decision strategies for selecting and evaluating appropriate research designs, sampling methods, sampling size planning, data collection methods, measurement strategies, and data analysis in the development of research studies. The students clinical specialty provides the focus for developing a research proposal to be carried out as a research study during the second year of the programme. The Changing Health Care Context The course aims to extend students understanding of the health care delivery system in Hong Kong and current complexities and challenges within the system. The course focuses on contemporary health topics such as changing population profiles, emergence of infectious diseases, an increasing incidence of chronic disease and the integration of Chinese medicine. It aims to extend students understanding and analysis of the concepts, policies and structures influencing the health care system and examine the roles of the advanced practice nurse in the changing health care context and provision of care. Advanced Nursing Practice III This course aims to develop students understanding of the role of the advanced practice nurse in terms of evaluating health outcomes. The evaluation of health outcomes will focus on both process and outcome strategies including the cost effectiveness of care. Organisational, leadership and change theories will be examined to guide students in making quality improvement decisions in their specialty practice. Models of clinical supervision to enhance nursing practice and health promotion will also be explored. The Chinese University of Hong Kong 4 The Chinese University of Hong Kong 5

5 Year 2 Preparation of a Research Dissertation Tuition Fee Research Dissertation The major focus for the second year of the programme is an individually supervised research project undertaken in the student s area of specialist practice leading to the presentation of a dissertation of approximately 10,000 words. Students will work with their supervisor over the two years of the programme to prepare their proposal and complete their research project. Seminar Presentations Tuition fee is currently HK$46,000 Career Opportunities The successful completion of the programme will prepare nurses for leadership roles in advanced practice and for entry into clinical posts in tertiary institutions and entry to PhD studies. Students will also be required to attend and present at student-led seminars during Year 2 of the programme. The seminar presentations will focus on the progress and methodological issues arising from the research studies being completed by the students. The seminars will allow debate about the research approach and emerging methodological issues between students and academic staff.
