How to use this Guide This Course Enrolment Guide 2015 provides you with information on when and where the units available for study in this program(s) will be offered in Enrolling in units for Read Section 3. Program Information for information on course structure and unit sequence. Take note of any prerequisite or co-requisite requirements before selecting particular units. A prerequisite is a requirement that must be met by a student before enrolment in a stipulated unit. It is your responsibility to ensure that you meet the prerequisites for a unit prior to enrolling into that unit. A co-requisite is a requirement that must be met by having already passed or being concurrently enrolled in an associated unit in order to be able to enrol in the stipulated unit. If you wish to enrol into a unit for which you have not met the prerequisite or corequisite requirements, please obtain approval from your Course Coordinator. 2. Refer to the unit listings in Section 4. Units Offered in 2015 to select your units. Take note of the study period in which units are offered. 3. You must refer to Administration & Enrolment on the ACU website ( for information on how to complete your enrolment via Student Connect. Administration & Enrolment also provides detailed information on managing your studies. 4. Log on to Student Connect and enrol ( Student Connect is a web interface allowing students to complete their ACU enrolment online. IMPORTANT NOTE Failure to enrol or re-enrol before the published due dates for re-enrolment on the ACU website ( may result in late fee penalties. Even if you are unsure of what units you need to enrol in, please ensure that you enrol or re-enrol in at least one unit before the due date. Program Information Requirements for the completion of the Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) is a 3 year full-time undergraduate degree (or equivalent part-time). Graduates will qualify with a comprehensive understanding of the disciplines of Sociology and Psychology, including sound knowledge of the behavioural and mental processes and the professional skills to work in a broad range of areas or progress to postgraduate training. The Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) is recognised by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as an accredited three year undergraduate sequence in Psychology. Students must complete 240cp (24 units) from the schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of: a) 10cp from the core unit SOCS242 Social Issues and Policy b) 80cp (50cp from core units and 30cp of elective units) from the Sociology Major (8 units) c) 120cp from the APAC* accredited Specialisation in Psychology (12 units) d) 20cp from Program Core units including: a. HIST106 Australian Indigenous Peoples Past and Present b. HIST331 Human Rights in History (Pre: 10cp from 100 level history unit) c. SOCS09 Race and Ethnicity in Australia (Pre: 10cp from 100 level sociology unit) OR d. Other units from the list of Program Core units for the Bachelor of Arts e) 10cp from one first Year Unit to be chosen as Elective (selected from the Bachelor of Social Science or the Bachelor of Arts) For information on the duration of your course, and the requirements to complete your award, please refer to the Course Rules for your program. 6 3.1 Major/Minor Offerings Major A Major is an approved sequence of units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area totalling at least 8 units, normally including at least 1 unit at Introductory level and at least 6 units at Advanced level. Minor A Minor is an approved sequence of units in one discipline or approved interdisciplinary area totalling at least 4 units, normally including at least 1 unit at Introductory level and at least 2 units at Advanced level. Program Core Units In the three-year Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology) course students must undertake two Program Core units in their first year of study. Units can be chosen from the Program Core Units list of units offered. Discipline Areas Majors Students must complete a Major in Sociology (8 units) and a major in Psychology (12 units) Sociology Major A study of Sociology requires the student to adopt the 'Sociological imagination' to examine critically one's own society and its relationship to the global community. At the introductory level a student is inducted into sociological thought, concepts and perspectives, the application of which form an essential part of more advanced units. Students must complete SOCS100 Introduction to Sociology before advanced units can be undertaken. The units SOCS108 Contemporary Society and Change, SOCS207 Qualitative Sociological Research Methods, SOCS234 Sociological Theory and Practice and SOCS237 Quantitative Sociological Research Methods are also compulsory units for the Sociology major. Students are thus required to undertake five compulsory units and three elective units.** ** Students who complete PSYC206 Research Design and Statistics 2 and PSYC311 Research Design and Statistics 3 will not be required to undertake the Sociology core units SOCS207 Qualitative Sociological Research Methods and SOCS237 Quantitative Sociological Research Methods. Instead these two core units will be replaced with two Sociology electives. Psychology APAC Accredited Specialisation 12 units are required to complete an APAC Accredited Specialisation in Psychology.
