4 Message from the Honours Coordinator The Honours Program in Finance at the University of Melbourne has an outstanding reputation. The degree is well-regarded by private and public sector firms, particularly by high profile organisations including major corporations, investment banks and management consulting firms. Graduates have also gone on to pursue further academic studies including MBA and PhD degrees at top Australian and international universities. The honours year is an additional (fourth) year of specialised study in Finance. It is an integrated program with small classes and an emphasis on acquiring practical research skills while studying specialised subject areas. The honours year is open to Commerce students and combined Commerce students from the University of Melbourne as well as suitable graduates from other institutions. It is undertaken on a full-time basis immediately after, or within two years of, finishing the requirements for the three-year Bachelor s degree. The honours year is an entry qualification for research higher degrees (Masters and PhD) both in Australia and overseas. An integral part of the honours year is the annual Finance Honours Retreat, which is usually held on the last Friday before the commencement of Semester One. At the retreat, students will have the opportunity to discuss with staff the academic expectations the Department has of its honours students, and receive assistance in beginning the process of identifying and managing possible research essay topics. In addition, the retreat provides a valuable opportunity for students to get to know their peers and staff members they will work closely with. The 2016 Finance Honours Retreat is sponsored by Macquarie Capital, who will have an all-day presence at the retreat. Corporate sponsorship in this and similar events provides students with valuable links with industry. Admission requirements The Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) is offered for full-time Semester One (March) entry only. To be eligible for admission to Honours in Finance, students must have: > Satisfied the requirements of the pass degree and completed a major in Finance (or equivalent) with a grade of at least H2B (70%) in each of the level-3 subjects required for the major; > Students must also have successfully completed Basic Econometrics or Econometrics. Selection into Honours in Finance is at the discretion of the Head of the Department of Finance. Students should note that a quota may be applied to the number of places available for Honours in Finance. Requirements for entry to a combined honours program, where one of the disciplines is finance, are the same as that for the Honours in Finance Program. In addition, students should consult the eligibility requirements for consideration for entry to the other discipline of choice. 5 Honours year in Finance Students are required to take the equivalent of eight subjects (100 points) during the honours year. Other subjects that have been offered by the Department of Finance in the Honours year: > Numerical Techniques in Finance These must include the following: > Advanced Corporate Finance > Risk Strategies > Advanced Derivative Securities > Advanced Investments > Research Methods in Finance > Financial Institutions Management > Case Studies in Finance > Finance Research Essay (Double subject) > One other 12.5 point subject taught by the Department of Finance > Financial Crisis: A Critical Analysis > 25 points of subjects taught within or outside the Faculty of Business and Economics as approved by the Head of the Department of Finance. 6 Duration The honours year is an additional (fourth) year of specialised study in finance. It is a one-year full-time program. In 2016, the Finance Honours year commences with the off campus honours retreat to be held on Friday 26th February Application Deadline Deadline for applications is on Friday, 20th November 2015 for 2016 entry. Students are required to take the equivalent of eight subjects (100 points) during the honours year with three subjects taken from each discipline. The research essay is taken in either finance or the other discipline. Students undertaking the Finance Research Essay must also enrol in Research Methods in Finance and two level-400 Finance subjects as approved by the Head of the Department of Finance. Students undertaking the research essay in another discipline (for example, Accounting), must enrol in the following: > Advanced Corporate Finance > Advanced Investments > Advanced Derivative Securities. The Honours in Finance Retreat Sponsor The Department of Finance invites a prominent employer of our Honours graduates to sponsor the annual introductory Honours Retreat on a two-year rotating basis.
