Nurse accepts responsibility for safety and quality of nursing practice and conduct. Nursing practice is provided in a culturally safe manner and supports the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi/ Te Tiriti o Waitangi: protection, participation and selfdetermination. The client determines care as culturally safe. At all times applies the nursing process: skilled assessment, planning, implementation of best practice and evaluation. Directs, monitors and evaluates nursing care that is provided by nurse assistants, enrolled nurses and others. The environment is managed to achieve client safety during the periprocedural process. Practice reflects competence in technical skills required to meet patient and procedural needs (see technical competencies). All patients receive a comprehensive and accurate nursing assessment (using pathways as a guide) to identify needs and risks/early warning signs that will influence care delivery and interventions that may be required. Nursing care is provided in a reliable way, to meet needs in a timely and economic manner, according to a documented care pathway and the technical competencies for this specialty. All practice interventions are managed in a safe and appropriate manner and according to best practice guidelines e.g. administration of interventions, treatments, medications. Documentation is accurate and maintains confidentiality of information. Handover of patient is managed skillfully in both receipt of patient into Department and discharge to inhospital environment: Discharge home requires handover to family member who will stay with and support patient overnight if interventional procedure on the day. The patient has adequate explanation of the effects, consequences and what to expect following radiological procedures. Nursing action is appropriate to protect the nurse and others when faced with unexpected patient responses, confrontation, personal threat or other crisis situation. Communication is effective with clients and members of the health care team in all interactions. Environment is managed to facilitate calmness so the patient can make sense of what is happening for them. Inter-professional health care and quality improvement Team relationships Quality Improvement Relationships with colleagues and allied health team are professional, positive and collaborative in order to facilitate and co-ordinate care that achieves appropriate procedural outcome. Professional approach recognises, respects and values roles and skills of all members of the health care team in delivery of care. Clinical safety is key priority in practice: Completes orientation, undertakes in-service education, uses policies and procedures to guide practice. Is alert to early warning signs of compromised patient status and acts proactively. Policies are adhered to (e.g. confidentiality, privacy). Action to improve quality of care and practice (best practice, audit, correction) is taken to improve the standards of nursing practice. Accountability is taken for action, omissions and commissions. Delegation is appropriate. Individual responsibility for Workplace Health and Safety under the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 is recognized and appropriate action taken. Professional Development The Health Practitioner Competence Assurance Act obligations are adhered to: Maintaining competence, Portfolio presentation, updating knowledge, undergoing competence assessment and annually reapplying for practicing certificate. Complies with the WDHB Professional Development and Recognition Programme (PDRP). Annually seeks peer review and completes the competence assessment process as required. Ensures clinical and educational requirements exceed requirements of APC. Statutory & Treaty of Waitangi obligations Ensures the professional and political integrity of WDHB by carrying out all functions in compliance of the Treaty of Waitangi and by demonstrating a serious commitment to keeping the treaty alive. 7 PERSON SPECIFICATION POSITION TITLE: Registered Nurse Minimum Preferred Qualification Registered Nurse (RGON, RCpN, RPN, BHSc) Experience Recent experience as a registered nurse in a clinical environment Recent experience working in radiology service, theatre or intensive care related clinical field AND/OR Experience as a registered nurse working with Interventional Radiology within the last five years Skills/Knowledge/Behaviour Nursing knowledge and skill learned in a formal education programme; technically competent with core treatment practices Experience working in Radiology service Knowledge of sterile technique and supplies during special examinations Requires proficiency in dealing with arterial puncture wounds Is aware of contemporary standards and has reputation of providing good nursing care Good communication skills and customer service practices Practice shows understanding of and commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi Positive manner, able to influence without conflict Calm, even, consistent and mature personality Upholds confidentiality with a reputation for high integrity and discretion Demonstrated confident collaborative approach in team practice Waitemata District Health Board -JOB DESCRIPTION RN Page 7
