1 POSITION PURPOSE The educator role will report to the charge nurse manager (CNM), but will also be accountable to the Knowledge Centre Manager to ensure organisational education requirements are coordinated and align with the organisation s strategy. The purpose of the educator role is to initiate and facilitate organisational, service and ward/unit level educational requirements for nursing staff, and to provide educational support for healthcare providers and consumers. The educator will champion the integration of research and evidenced based practice into nursing care within the service. Provide clinical leadership, foster a quality improvement culture, whilst minimising risks and working with staff to continuously improve nursing practice and patient outcomes. Key Task / Accountabilities Education Initiates and facilitates organisational specific educational requirements for nursing staff Performance Indicators Facilitates education of team members about Tikaka best practice guidelines & the Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Ensures all staff have completed the mandatory requirements and reports to CNM of any issues Works in collaboration with the Knowledge Centre manager to plan, implement and evaluate educational requirements for the organisation Proactively instigates best practise guidelines, NZ Nursing/ Midwifery Councils and Southern DHB policies/protocols and standards using sound change management practice to ensure integration within nursing practice in ward/unit/service/organisation Actively participate in organisational wide programmes and initiatives such as generic nursing orientation, the Professional Development and Recognition Programme, Nurse Entry to Practice Programme, Critical and Acute Care Courses, nursing student orientation and education Southern DHB V1 Issued: 19/09/2007 Page 2 of 6

3 Initiates and facilitates service specific educational requirements Facilitate educational opportunities to meet individual staff needs within specialised area Provide educational support for health care providers and healthcare consumers Research & Evidenced Based Practice Champions the integration of research and evidenced based practice into nursing care within the service Actively participate in forums/networks relevant to area of practice and disseminate knowledge/learning back to staff within relevant specialist service Initiate and participate in specialist workshops/forums that align with organisational education strategy in consultation with Knowledge Centre manager Develop and adhere to an education plan for the service in collaboration with the CNM, nurse director and Knowledge Centre manager, and ensure it aligns with budgetary constraints and the organisational education strategies Initiate and develop policy guidelines for nursing care relevant to speciality area, utilising research based evidence in collaboration with the nurse director/knowledge Centre manager and CNM Develop, implement and evaluate appropriate orientation packages tailored to the needs of the service/ward/unit and the individual nurse. Actively engage in the orientation of new staff/students Encourage a culture of continuous learning, positive critique of the status quo at the ward/unit, service and organisational levels Actively adhere to preceptoring principles during orientation of new staff Identify, plan and initiate teaching and learning strategies for members of the team in consultation with the CNM/CMM, and in relation to individual s performance objectives and within the ward/unit/service budget In collaboration with the Mandatory Training/CPR co-ordinator ensure all staff within area of responsibility has met mandatory training requirements. Ensure all training undertaken is recorded on the individuals electronic Onestaff record. Educates and supports others in decision making relevant to their scope of practice Supervises, mentors and educates other staff using a variety of methods; including role modelling of expert practice within the relevant speciality service Actively encourages nurses in portfolio development and submission for levelling on the PDRP In collaboration with the CNS, and specialist clinicians participate in the development and updating of patient information based on current evidenced based health information Is a critical consumer of research and continuously scans the specialist literature to inform own practice. Encourages and teaches staff to do the same Nursing and related evidence is critiqued, discussed and disseminated within the service team, and where relevant to other services and forums within the organisation Change management principles are used in collaboration with the Southern DHB V1 Issued: 19/09/2007 Page 3 of 6

4 CNM and nurse director to ensure practice within the ward/unit/service adheres to evidence and best practice guidelines Provides research based clinical management options for complex clinical situations/issues Follows up with staff to ensure they report back to the service on their conference /forum/study day attendance through a written report and presentation to ensure dissemination of information Role models the application of evidence based best practice principles in own practice, and facilitates other to do the same Leadership Maintain a significant presence in the clinical area as a resource, role model, educator, coach and leader Ensure the Collaborative Model of Nursing Care and the principles of direction and delegation are adhered to within the ward/unit in collaboration with the CNM Maintain professional standards, codes and adherence to Southern DHB policy, whilst ensuring alignment of staff conduct within these standards/codes/policies. Identify and deal with any breaches where appropriate and in consultation with the charge nurse/midwife manager Ensure clinical practice is provided within accepted professional standards, codes, policies and relevant legislation. Report to CNM of any breaches Be active and visible within the team working alongside nursing/midwifery staff, motivating and actively praising/ valuing staff endeavours, and acknowledging patient satisfaction and good clinical care Encourage innovation and practice initiatives that enhance clinical care or service provision Foster and participate in a team approach to clinical emergencies within the area including restraint Promote excellence in clinical service provision through the sharing of new knowledge, ideas, research and evidence based practice, whilst encouraging others to do the same Promote patient / client centred care that incorporates a strong customer service philosophy through effective and positive interactions with patients/ clients, staff, visitors and other agencies Role model and promote the expectation that education, clinical excellence and evidenced based practice is the responsibility of all nursing staff Quality and Risk Management Contributes to the service s risk minimisation activities and service activities Actively contributes to quality, health and safety activities and ensures infection control processes are maintained whilst facilitating others to also actively contribute Identifies risk management issues, appropriately initiates risk mitigation in consultation with CNM and nurse director and educates staff about risks within the area Initiates audit and evaluation of clinical practice within the ward/service and implements corrective actions in consultation Southern DHB V1 Issued: 19/09/2007 Page 4 of 6

Patient Care Plan, direction and delegation, documentation and handover, and restraint Ensure there is a good customer/ client service, working to improve customer satisfaction Satisfaction survey results indicate that staff are encouraged and supported in their work as it relates to the area of practice Contribution to Organisational Leadership Participate collectively with other educators, under the direction of the Knowledge Centre manager and nurse directors, to provide education across the organisation and within the organisation s education strategies Participate in focus groups/projects that advance issues and strategies of service /organisational priority PERSON SPECIFICATION It is essential that the applicant be a registered nurse/midwife with strong clinical leadership skills and have a minimum of 3 years practice within the defined area of clinical speciality It is desirable that the applicant has a post graduate qualification in a relevant field Achievement of at least Level 3 within the PDRP and is committed to working toward Level 4 of PDRP within 1 year of commencing the position SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE Excellent group facilitation skills and history of a collaborative team approach Has advanced communication techniques such as conflict resolution, diffusion and mediation skills Innovative and flexible with positive and problem solving approach in all situations Has proven clinical credibility in speciality Is a critical consumer of research and embraces evidenced based practice when carrying out any task /function Knowledge of and demonstrates use of adult teaching and learning principles Has excellent computer skills including Word and Powerpoint, and has a sound knowledge of the internal programmes used within the service, such as Oracare and Onestaff. FITNESS A reasonable level of fitness is required to cope with the demanding physical requirements of the job.
