This class examines the contemporary theory and practice of managing organizations and the process of organizational change and development (i.e. identifying problems within organizations and fixing them). The class involves pertinent theories, procedures, and problem-solving tools/techniques and considers issues of effective leadership, human resource management, organizational theory and behavior, and personal and interpersonal skills. I will make copies of these readings, and will hand them out in class.
2 INFORMATION ABOUT CLASS PROCEDURES Respect for opposing views: Our class time will be devoted to a wide range of discussions, some of which may shed as much heat as light on the subject at hand. Not to worry; There is much to be gained by active, critical debates on opposing viewpoints. Please be respectful of others opinions. Keep your focus on the Turn off cell phones and your wireless connection. Stay plugged in to the class discussion, not the Internet, during class. Use your laptop ONLY for taking notes. Snacks are okay: It is acceptable to bring snacks to class; we will take a short break in the middle of class. Use APA Style: Written assignments must be crafted according to the most recent edition of the APA Style Manual. I will be checking your papers for plagiarism. Even if plagiarism is unintentional, it is still a violation. Computer accessibility: Computer labs are available on campus at numerous locations: o 1) SPA offers two PC computer labs for student use. One of the labs is located on the 4 th floor to the left of the elevators and the other is located on the 5 th floor across from room 500. Both of the labs are accessible seven days a week. However, the 5 th floor lab requires that you use your CU-Denver ID after hours or on weekends. The 4 th floor requires that you use your CU-Denver ID for access to the lab at any hour of the day. 3 ID to access the 4 th floor computer lab and to access the building after hours. o PC and Mac computer labs are also located in North Classroom Rooms 1206, 1208, 2206 and St. Cajetan's. Reading assignments: Please read all assigned readings by the beginning of each class. Please read the syllabus very carefully! Delivery of written assignment: Hard copies of written assignments should be turned in on the due date listed below. Late written assignments will receive an automatic 3-point deduction. GRADED ASSIGNMENTS Class Participation (50 points) Class participation is 50% of your grade, and therefore is an essential part of this class. Dialectical Journal (25 points) You will write a dialectical journal on four chapters of your choice from the book. See the supplemental attachment for more information. Case Study Analysis Paper (25 points) You will write a paper showing how you would approach the Bob Knowlton case on p. 483 of the book if you were brought in to conduct an OD intervention from start to finish. The paper will be 8-10 pages in length, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, Times New Roman font. Be sure to include a cover page, page numbers, and references page. Be sure to incorporate all of the readings from the class into your paper. EVALUATION AND GRADING Graded Assignments: Assignments Points Due Dates Participation 50 Ongoing Dialectical Journal Case Study Analysis Paper Total Points = 100* Grade Scale* A = %, A- = 90-93%, B+ = 87-89%, B = 84-86%, B- = 80-83%, C+ = 77-79%, C = 70-76%, D = 66-69%, F = 65% or below *A grade of B means the student has met general expectations for graduate student performance and demonstrates competence in the subject matter studied. A grade of A means that the student has exceeded expectations and demonstrated superior competencies. A grade of C indicates the student needs more work to achieve competence in the study area.
