Bast, Ph.D. Office: EC: 270C Regnier Hall; LC: 610 JRP Phone: Office Hours: Mondays, 2:30-4:30 EC or by appointment (No office hours on 2/16, 3/2, 3/30, and 4/27) Course Description: Positive psychology is the rigorous study of what is right and positive about people and institutions. Positive psychologists call for as much focus on strength as on weakness, as much attention on positive emotions as negative emotions, as much interest in building the best things in life as in repairing the worst, and as much attention to promoting the fulfillment of lives of healthy people as to healing the wounds of the distressed. This course will first present an introduction to the core assumptions and research findings associated with human strengths and positive emotions, then move on to explore interventions and applications informed by this perspective in counseling and psychotherapy, as well as in domains personally relevant to the lives of students such as school, work, family and other close relationships. The course aligns with the primary mission of the School of Education that is to prepare leaders in education and human services fields. As stated in the School Code: Within the University, the School of Education serves Kansas, the nation, and the world by (1) preparing individuals to be leaders and practitioners in education and related human service fields, (2) expanding and deepening understanding of education as a fundamental human endeavor, and (3) helping society define and respond to its educational responsibilities and challenges. The components that frame this mission for our initial and advanced programs are Research and Best Practice, Content Knowledge, and Professionalism. These interlocking themes build our Conceptual Framework. Course Objectives: 1. To understand the history, aims, and scope of positive psychology. 2. To introduce and critically examine a growing body of research and writing on subjective well-being, personal strengths, positive emotions, and positive organizations. 3. To investigate, guided by this literature, what kinds of experiences fulfill people, what human characteristics lead to personal effectiveness, and what social conditions and characteristics of place appear to elicit these qualities and experiences. 4. To assess and evaluate one s own well-being, strengths, and limitations and environmental resources based on the information covered in class. 5. To be able to apply positive psychology to important domains in one s life and in the lives of others with whom you interact. Required Text: Snyder, C. R., & Lopez, S. J. (2007). Positive Psychology: The Scientific and Practical Explorations of Human Strengths. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage. This Text is Referred to as PP on the Course Calendar.

2 Additional Readings: Additional readings may be required. Some of the readings will be available on-line, whereas others will be available on reserve in the Edwards Campus library or handed out in class. I will keep you informed of additional reading assignments as they come up throughout the semester. Course Requirements: Following are the general requirements of the course, although some modifications may occur. Your grade in this course will be based on the percentage of points received out of a total possible of 300 points and determined by your performance in the following areas: 1. Your active participation in class (which includes attendance, keeping up with the readings and mini-experiments, and your contribution to class discussions and activities) will comprise a portion of your grade. It will be essential that you come to class prepared and willing to actively participate, think critically, and support each other respectfully. (30 pts total) 2. Activities and Assessments: You are required to complete a number of Personal Mini-Experiments conducted both during class time as well as outside class time. Out of Class activities should be typed (12pt, Times New Roman) and double-spaced, and will be collected by the end of the class period in which the results are discussed. Some in-class activities may require additional work outside of the class time allotted in such cases, the remainder of the activity is to be typed and returned at the following class period. Finally, many positive psychology self-report measures are to be completed for discussion/review during class time. Self-report measures will be collected at the end of the class period in which they are discussed. These are not listed on your Course Calendar as they will be presented and discussed in the classes where they will be used/assigned. Late assignments will not be accepted. (50 pts total) 3. Positive Psychology In Action Group Project: You will be required to develop and contribute to a group project to be conducted over the course of the semester in order to spread positive psychology to others outside the classroom. The goal of this assignment is to have fun applying positive psychology while working to generate positive emotions and happiness in the lives of others. The professor will assign groups and allow some in-class time to develop project ideas. All projects will need to be approved by the professor before being implemented. A page group report describing the design and results of the project is required, as well as a 15 minute in-class presentation covering your project at the end of the semester. See separate handout at the end of syllabus for details of this project. (PPIA; 70 pts total; 45 pts for report; 25 pts for in-class presentation) 4. Exams (Undergraduate Students): There will be three exams over the course of the semester consisting of multiple choice and short answer/essay questions. NO MAKE- UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN, UNLESS THERE IS A DOCUMENTED DIRE EMERGENCY. (150 pts total; 50 pts per exam) 5. Teaching a Positive Psychology Class and Paper (Graduate Students): You will partner off with another graduate student and choose one of the class dates approved by the instructor to become Positive Psychology teacher extraordinaire and teach

3 this class on the topic(s) set for that day. You will be expected to incorporate lecture, discussion, activities, and whatever else your creative minds come up with to thoroughly teach and apply the material you have chosen. You and your partner also will be required to write a page paper (APA style) covering the topic you are teaching on in class (i.e. brief lit review on the construct(s), how it s measured, how it s applied, etc.). We will discuss this more in class. (150 pts total; 100 pts for teaching, 50 pts for paper) Grading Scale: % A B D A C D B C 59 & Below F B C- ****Any student in this course who has a disability that may prevent him/her from fully demonstrating his/her abilities should contact me personally as soon as possible so we can discuss accommodations necessary to ensure full participation and facilitate this educational opportunity. Personal Responsibility: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the information you missed from a classmate. All assignments are to be turned in on their due date and exams taken on their scheduled date. Late assignments will not be accepted unless a dire emergency exists. Under such circumstances, please notify me as soon as possible and be prepared to show documentation as appropriate. Classroom Behavior: I expect you to come to class on-time and prepared, and ready to participate in a manner that conveys respect towards your peers and me. Also, positivity is always helpful Paper Format: All assignments must be written in APA style. They must be turned in typed, double-spaced, using 12-point font (Times New Roman). Margins should be standard size (one inch on all sides). Papers more than one page long must be stapled. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation will count toward your paper grades, so be sure to edit carefully. If you need extra assistance with writing, you can receive free help from the KU Writing Center. Academic Misconduct: In the case of academic misconduct, which includes but is not limited to cheating, fabrication and falsification, plagiarism, or facilitating academic misconduct, it is my policy to give a failing grade for the assignment/activity in question.

5 Positive Psychology in Action Group Project This project will require you to come up with a plan to put positive psychology into action outside the classroom. In groups of about 5 students, you should select one or more positive psychology constructs (e.g., altruism, gratitude, forgiveness, mindfulness) or theories (e.g., broaden and build theory of positive emotions) and develop a plan to bring these constructs to life over the course of the semester, preferably having the effect of positively effecting the lives of others. At the end of the semester, you will be required to give a 15 minute presentation with your group about your positive psychology in action project. Written Report 45 pts All papers should include: a title page with the name of the project and names of all group members a section including the definition and a description of the positive psychology construct(s) and/or theories that you have attempted to put into action in your project a section describing the design, goals, and implementation of the project (i.e., what is the goal, what is the plan to achieve the goal, who will be effected by the project, what are the desired outcomes) and a rationale for why you think this plan will have the desired outcomes a section describing how the project actually worked out were the goals achieved? How did others respond to your work? What were the effects for the group members? Any unintended effects? an analysis section in which you critique your own work if there were problems or if the goals weren t achieved, why do you think this was the case and what could you do to improve this project if you were to try it again in the future? If the goals were achieved, why do you think this was the case and is there anything you would do different to make the project even better if you were to try it again in the future? a strong conclusion a list of references if any were required to write any portion of this paper All group members will individually write a one page summary to attach to the end of the group paper detailing their individual contributions to the group project. (Please note that these papers do not count as part of the page requirement) Oral Presentation 25 pts For the 15 minute class presentations about your project, you are expected to report on all the information requested from you in the written report. However, DO NOT simply read the report aloud. Remember, it is always more informational to show your audience what your talking about, rather than just telling them.
