The first is students professional development. Students will explore their areas of passion/interest/curiosity in psychology. This focus will be accomplished by providing students with an overview of the discipline of psychology, including expectations for the psychology major, learning the major career areas in psychology, career options for students who pursue a graduate degree in psychology, the graduate admissions process, expectations in graduate school, and learning concrete ways to gain field relevant experience as an undergraduate major. The second focus of this course is designed to help you become a better consumer of psychology through learning how psychologists write and do research. The major course requirement in this area is a research proposal, written according to the guidelines of the American Psychological Association (APA), on a topic in an area of psychology. You will receive guidance on your particular topic, both in individual and tutorial sessions and in class. This focus will be accomplished by providing you with information on how to: plan good research, conduction a literature search, understand the strengths and limitations of various research methods, critically evaluate information in professional journals, and develop proficiency in professional writing among other things. The research proposal will aid in the development of your senior project in your senior year. Students will: gain a firmer sense of career direction in Psychology take major concrete steps in preparing for a career in Psychology learn the genres of professional writing in Psychology learn the central methods of research in Psychology appreciate what is distinct about doing Psychology as a human science construct a research proposal for the senior research project Learning Outcomes

2 You will: learn the major career areas in Psychology articulate a career vision articulate a further plan of study and a career development plan for the next 1-2 years learn concrete ways to gain field relevant experience as an undergraduate major learn APA format and relevant psychology databases for research learn the variety of research methods and strategies routinely used in Psychology learn how to read, analyze, and critique empirical and theoretical work in Psychology gain mastery of the history and theoretical underpinnings of psychology as a human science formulate a senior research proposal based upon career vision and plan of study Required Text and Materials: (1) Stephen F. Davis and R. Eric Landrum. The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success. 4 th Edition ISBN: (2) Mitchel, Jolley, & Oshea. Writing for Psychology 4 th Edition. ISBN: (3) Other supplementary materials will be provided via courseden (4) Please also purchase a journal Course Format This course will be a mix of lecture, seminar, class discussions, and group problem-solving activities. Your performance in the course will be optimal if you prepare for class by doing assigned readings, carefully prepare and turn in all written work on time, have at least one discussion question on your mind before a class meeting begins, cooperate with other students, and demonstrate a professional attitude and demeanor in class. I would like you to think of the class as a supportive learning community that will guide you in a process of growth and discovery. I would also like to encourage you to think of yourself as a teacher of the other students in this class as your ideas, input, and participation really to help others to learn. Powerpoints will not be available.

3 3 Description of Assignments: Your grade will be based upon your performance on several assignments. I will discuss your assignments with you in much greater detail over the course of the semester. ALL written work submitted to me should be typed, double-spaced, with 1-inch margins, and in 12-point font Times New Roman. Please bring in a hard copy to hand and upload your assignment as an attached word document by the assignment date and time via courseden. Because our class discussion is based on your written work, I will only be able to accept a written assignment that is due if you are there in class to hand it in. DO NOT hand in a paper for an absent classmate. If you miss more than the first 10 minutes of class when an assignment is due, I will not accept your paper that day for credit. I will not accept late papers. You will receive a 0 for an assignment if you are not there the day it is due. I will only make an accommodation in the case of a documented medical emergency in which YOU are the person who had the medical emergency. (A) Professional Development Components: a. Intellectual Autobiography. Your intellectual autobiography is your opportunity to reflect on your life as a thinker and learner. In addition, you will reflect upon the events and circumstances that brought you to choose your major and to help others understand why you find your discipline a compelling framework for understanding the world. You intellectual autobiography should be between 2 and 3 pages, double spaced, 12- point font. Your intellectual autobiography is worth 5 points. b. What is your Theoretical Orientation? Specific directions will be discussed in class. This assignment is worth 7 points. c. Career Vision Statement. You will formulate a career plan and professional development goals. Your career vision statement is worth 10 points. d. P r o f e s s i o n a l D e v e l o p m e n t T e s t. You will be tested on all information covered up until the day of the quiz (*even information not directly covered in class*). The quiz is worth 10 points.

4 4 (B) Research Components a. Identify your Research Question/s. Submit a question/s that you are intensely interested in and which you would like to spend an entire semester answering during your senior project. This assignment is worth 4 points. b. Annotated Bibliography of 5 Primary/Secondary Sources. An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles, and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (usually about 150 words) descriptive and evaluative paragraph, the annotation (not the abstract of the article). The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader (me) of the relevance of the article, book, document to your topic, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. An APA example of an informative annotated bibliography will be available via courseden. This assignment is worth 7 points. c. Research Proposal and APA style Test. You will be tested on APA formatting and on research material and proposal development covered in class and in the reading up to the specified dates below. This test will be available to take anytime via courseden on October 10 th. The test must be completed via the specified date below. This test worth 10 points. d. Thinking about Methods. Based on the assigned reading each week, provide a description of how you would go about collecting data and testing the questions you are examining using the specified method outlined in the reading. Each methodology description should be no more than one page in length, double-spaced, 12-pont font. Each thinking about methods: assignment is worth 3 points totaling 12 points. (C) Integrative Essay/Research Proposal a. You will formulate an integrative essay/research proposal based upon your career vision and your exposure to research. You will have 2 opportunities to write your proposal. Specific instructions will be provided via courseden. (D) Processing a. We will cover a lot in this course. Some of the material will be close to your biographies as students. Other themes will be more remote to you. Some of the assignments you will feel well prepared for and others you may struggle. As such, I will be asking you to all to reflect and process throughout the throughout the course. Please come to class with your journal ready to write. I will be collecting your journal several times across the semester. This assignment is worth 5 points.

5 5 ****Professional Points**** You will have the opportunity to earn/lose 8 points for demonstrated professional behavior in class (on top of overall total grade for the class). Point deductions for professionalism will include: class absences, tardiness, cellphone usage in class, distracting classroom behavior, asking me to make exceptions, ing me to the wrong address, not showing up for a scheduled meeting, etc. I will submit a detailed list of professionalism points in class for your consideration. We will also be doing several in class activities that cannot be made up. Here is the breakdown of your grade out of 100 points: Grading Scale: Professional Development: 32 points Intellectual Autobiography: 5 points What is your Theoretical Orientation: 7 Professional Development Test: 10 Career Vision Statement: 10 Research Components: 33 points Identify Your Research Question: 4 Annotated Bibliography: 10 Research Proposal and APA style Test: 7 points Thinking about Methods: 12 points (each assignment is worth 3 points) Integrative Essay/ Research Proposal: 30 points Integrative Essay/Research Proposal Draft 1: 10 Integrative Essay/Research Proposal Final Draft: 20 Processing: 5 points Journal: 5 points You may check your grade status at any time; grades are available on courseden If you have any questions about your grade or note any discrepancy between the score you believe you obtained and what is found on courseden, let me know immediately. General Class Policies: ACADEMIC INTEGRITY All individual written work is expected to be your own, and plagiarism is highly unacceptable. Proper documentation and citation is required when attributing ideas/information. Please see the honor code in the student handbook me if you have questions, or come see me. If you are caught cheating in any way, you will automatically fail this course and it will be reported to the Dean s Office for possible probation or suspension from the University. Plagiarism is when you take personal credit for the words and ideas of others as they are presented in electronic, print, and verbal sources. You must clearly and accurately credit sources you use in written work for all class assignments. If you have been found to plagiarize, you will automatically fail the course and be reported to the administration for disciplinary action.

6 6 Papers will be graded according to the following criteria: a) degree of understanding of relevant concepts, b) adequacy of planning; c) comprehensiveness of supplementary research, d) clarity of expression. Because these statements are updated as federal, state, university, and accreditation standards change, you should review the information each semester. MISSING CLASS Class attendance is important. Coming to class after attendance is taken (or being more than 10 minutes late) or leaving early counts as an absence. So please remember, not coming to class will make it difficult to grasp the material adequately. However, if you cannot come to class (or choose not to), you do not need to tell me why and please do not ask me for the notes. It is your responsibility to get the notes from a friend in the class. If you do not know anyone, ask me and I will put you in touch with a reliable student. Once you have the notes from a classmate, I would be happy to review them with you and answer any questions you have. If you anticipate missing more than three class periods, you should plan to take this course during another semester when your schedule permits you to attend all class sessions ACCOMODATIONS FOR DISABILITIES Accommodations and modifications can be made for all assignments for those with specific learning disabilities (university documentation required). You will marked absent if you come to class more than 10 minutes late. 3. Do not use cell phones or any electronic devices during class time. Do not put cell phones on your desk. If I have to remind you not to use you cell phone, do not bother asking me for a letter of recommendation. 4. All class assignments should be handed via hard copy and through courseden. 5. If you miss your final exam, and prior arrangements have not been made, you may receive a grade of F on that exam or paper and this may affect your final grade in the class. If you miss your exam due to an emergency, please contact the Psychology office at (678) or go to Melson Room 123 as soon as possible to complete the application: Missed Final Exam: Verification of Emergency. This form will need to be approved by the chair for an incomplete grade which may allow you the time to make up your exam or complete your final assignments. This application will require documentation and authorization from you to verify your emergency.
