I am willing to meet with you online as well, just Course Description: Survey of major behavioral skills used by managers to help them understand and influence behavior in an organizational setting. Required Text: Leadership Classics by J. Timothy McMahon. Waveland Press. ISBN: Strengths Finders 2.0 ISBN: (not required but recommended) Various Instructor Handouts (on Blackboard) Harvard Business Case: Other Materials: Wall Street Journal or other Business News Sources Course Overview: The purpose of this class is to help you learn the several unique facets of leadership and decision making. This includes the development of business skills that extend beyond a single class. This class combines what you have learned from your previous classes (functional classes) and synthesizes them into a framework that will allow you to develop a broader perspective beyond what a manager performs. This learning will be applied through cases, videos, extensive readings, and other assignments utilizing the analysis skills developed through the progressive nature of this class. Course Goals: 1. Develop an awareness of leadership. 2. To provide a conceptual framework for leading others and your own constraints. 3. Recognize that leadership is both an art and a science

2 4. Study leadership while engaging in self-exploration. Participation. Meaningful class participation via Blackboard is highly encouraged. Discussion Questions. Students will use the Blackboard discussion board to facilitate class discussions. Students are expected to participate in the Blackboard discussions in a timely manner relative to each week s lecture video topic. Discussions will be graded based on the discussion grading criteria (Appendix B). You will be expected to make your weekly discussion board postings within each class week. For example, during the class Week 2 (Mar 24), I will not count postings made after Monday, March 31 (11:59PM) for your class participation grade. However, you are welcome to continue making discussion postings throughout the semester. Leadership Self-assessments/Development Plan. Students will complete pre and post leadership selfassessments and develop an action plan for personal development. Included in the final exam will be a question which discusses the post analysis and steps taken during the course to improve on leadership skills. Instructions and assessments are located on Blackboard. Leadership Analysis. Students will complete an analysis of the leadership styles of two basketball coaches possessing very different leadership approaches: Bobby Knight and Mike Krzyzewski. The analysis will be entitled: Leadership On and Off the Court: A Comparison of the Leadership Styles of Mike Krzyzewski and Bobby Knight. Use the following cases to provide some background information about the nature of each coach: Coach Knight: The Will to Win HBS Case AND Coach K: A Matter of the Heart. HBS Case PDF-ENG. Order from website: The leadership analysis should be written in essay form and at minimum address the following points: Introduction, background, history Comparisons of the two coaches Predominant leadership style(s) present? Describe these leadership styles Strengths and weaknesses of style Are styles unique to setting/environment (sports vs. business) Effectiveness of style Is leadership behavior gender-neutral, or are there times when it is appropriate to match the approach to either men or women? Your ability to work with/for this person Your overall assessment Relate to leadership materials/readings/discussions of this course DUE: April 17, 2014 no later than 11:59PM Exam. The final exam will include approximately 20 multiple choice questions and 5 essay questions. You will take the exam on Blackboard ("assessments" tool). It will be open from Friday (May 2, 2014) 6am until Tuesday (May 6, 2014) at 11:59 pm (cst). You may take it at any time within this window, BUT you must complete it within the allotted time limit once you have started the exam. Final Project Presentation. The final project presentation is a comparison of the class text, materials, and discussions to a pop leadership text. Pop leadership texts are the current (and often popular) non academic leadership books (e.g., The Five Minute Manager, Good to Great, It s Your Ship, etc.). How are they similar, how are they different? Provide an example of how someone might use your book and the 2

3 class text to improve or develop their leadership skills. A written summary of the main points of your comparison should be submitted on the Blackboard discussion board at least 2 days prior to your presentation (no more than 3 pages). Failure to submit the summary will result in a 10 point deduction from your project grade. Summaries will be posted on Blackboard for students to access prior to class. The presentations will last approximately 10 minutes each. Presentations will be made using Blackboard Collaborate during the last few weeks of April. More details to follow. No formal research paper is required, only the summary and presentation. Grading for Oral/Written Assignments. Professional quality work is expected and grades will be assigned accordingly. All written assignments must: be typed double spaced using 12 point Times Roman font (unless otherwise noted). APA style should be used. All assignments are due on the dates presented in the attached schedule and must be turned in on time to receive credit for the assignment. Any late assignments will be penalized 1 letter grade per day. Problems associated with late assignments resulting from special circumstances such as hospitalization or other unusual situations such as military deployment should be discussed with the instructor prior to the missed assignment. Course Grade and Evaluation: Grade Distribution: 35% Examination 30% Leadership Analysis 5% Leadership self-assessment tests (graded for completion) 20% Final Project Presentation 10% Class Participation 100% Grading Scale A = % B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69% F = 59 and below Honor Code: Before proceeding with your first regular assignment, copy the following to a document, read it, sign it, and submit it to me as you would any other assignment. This is a pass/fail assignment, and you will not have full access to course content and grades until this assignment has been submitted. Grading Criteria: Score Explanation 100 Excellent Comment adds valid new information or perspective to week s topic; communicates a clear understanding of class reading(s); encourages additional conversation; ties into other comments or points made during class discussion; if possessing opinion, well supported; comment is well written; timely 90 Above Average Missing one or more of the qualities above but makes a significant above average contribution to class learning; timely 80 Average Missing more than two qualities above and only makes an average contribution.
