11 Brenda Helminen, MTU VoIP Workshop Began work in spring 2000 Contract for Centrex service ending 2003 Converged network/telephone staff Robust data network & physical infrastructure MTU already doing video over IP; IP technology fit our strategic goals. MTU in a good position to leap frog classic PBX technology if IP telephony was mature enough to implement.
12 Brenda Helminen, MTU The primary goals of VoIP this project Workshop are to stabilize the cost of telephone service for campus and to enhance the business support functionality of our telephone service. Key decisions: User Power over Ethernet switches Deploy UPS broadly Service Quality Engineering Separate VLANs for voice; low oversubscription Management Tools Automated configuration; Web interfaces
13 Brenda Helminen, MTU Key benefits: VoIP Workshop All work orders are minor variations of the same basic process. One technician can do all network and telephone work orders. Troubleshooting has become more standardized. Services to remote sites cost effective with no reduced functionality. Easy ability to add new POE services (WAPs, IP security cameras, card readers)
14 Dewitt Latimer, Notre Dame Hosted VoIP Services VoIP at the University Workshop of Notre Dame: 4 Years of Trials and Tribulations If most campus telecomm/video/data operations were not a monopoly on campus How long do you think they would last in a free-market economy where the consumers have freedom of choice? Guiding principle: Notre Dame is convinced that advanced communication services with a heavy emphasis on mobility and integrated wireless will be required to run the modern university with an increasingly mobile constituent group and doing so was not within the core mission of the University
15 Dewitt Latimer, Notre Dame Historically a Centrex VoIP operation; Workshop approached 2005 end of contract Goals: Close to zero capital expense and ownership, minimal exit costs Short-term contract, no minimums Tight integration with wireless provider for mobility Transition not a flash cutover Chose hosted solution via SBC that would fit these and provide other benefits (with acknowledged downsides)
16 Dewitt Latimer, Notre Dame Initial trial rollout took VoIP 12 months Workshop to develop equivalent services All going fine until AT&T acquisition Key change in technology took transition back to day 1 Making progress until BellSouth merger came up lost 12 months of development Tried to make it work but delays, shortcomings: ND pulled plug on 3/1/08 Still looking for managed service
