1 *Red Ribbon Week: October Monday Put Drugs to Sleep (Wear PJs) Tuesday From Head to Toe, I m Drug Free (Crazy Hair and Socks) Read for a Better Life: We encourage all parents to read to their students 15 minutes a day. We had many parent volunteers read to our students for the Kick Off on September 21. Please your student s teacher if you would like to volunteer to read to the class. Wednesday Peace Out Drugs (Wear Tie Dye or colorful clothes) Thursday Team Up against Drugs (Wear your favorite Team Shirt) Friday Don t Get Mixed Up in Drugs (Wear mixed and match clothes) *Fine Arts Day: Fourth Grade students will attend the Fine Arts Day at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on October 6th. PTO Information: Big Kahuna Fundraiser orders were due September 30. Items will arrive to Patterson on October 27 for parents to pick up items from 4 pm to 7pm. The next PTO meeting is October 5 at 8:30 am.

2 *Hours: Patterson s hours are from 8:05 to 3:10. Your student is tardy after 8:05 am in the morning. Please make sure that they are arriving by 7:45 if they plan to eat breakfast. If you are running late, make sure they eat something at home because our cafeteria will close at 8:05 promptly. Morning announcements start at 7:55 am. Many students are missing announcements because they arrive late from car rider or from breakfast. ***************************************************** Dates to Remember 10/5 PTO Meeting 8:30am First Lego League: The FLL is meeting every Monday from 3:30 to 4:15 in room 208. Students are working with robots and starting to look at programming to make the robots move. We are Prepared, Responsible, show Integrity, Disciplined, and Engaged Students are recognized for their Puma Pride at special luncheons. 3 Unleash Your Potential: Grade Level Pre-K students have been working diligently to learn our school rules and what it means to show Puma Pride. In math, students will learn how to identify and create shapes, identify numbers 0-10, and verbally count to 30. In language arts, students will be introduced to their first letters, begin to develop alphabet knowledge, and begin to develop name recognition skills. It is going to be a wonderful month! Kindergarten has had a great start to the school year! We have learned our rules, procedures and enjoyed learning about one another. This month, we will be assessing students on their letters, sounds, sight words, writing, numbers and counting for their report card. In language arts, we will be focusing on our letters, sight words and fictional stories. In math, we will be learning about the numbers 0-10 and the nickel. It is going to be a pawsitively perfect month! Third Grade: This month 3 rd grade will be learning lots of fun and interesting topics! In Reading, we will be studying the genres of Non-Fiction (Expository) and Poetry. We will practice identifying text features, main idea, and cause and effect. We will also write summaries and determine unknown words in context. In Math, we will be studying addition and subtraction with regrouping up to 1,000. We will also continue to practice place value and rounding numbers. Fourth Grade: We hope everyone enjoyed their summer break and are as excited as we are to get the school year rolling. We've had a great time getting to know one another. This month we are DRA testing to determine your child's instructional reading level. In Math we're working on place value to one billion. We are looking forward to an awesome year with your child! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher. As the fall starts, our amazing first graders are working really hard! They are analyzing characters and plots of fiction stories. They also will keep working on writing and revising their personal narratives. In Math, our students will learn about place value and geometry. In Science, our scientists will conduct experiments related to changes for cooling/heating. Finally, in Social Studies our great citizens will learn about geography and government.

4 Unleash Your Potential: ART News: October is going to be filled with tons of spooky fun! Children will learn to make colorful slime, create minions wearing silly costumes, and explore traditions from different cultures around the world. Rodeo art contest is currently taking place alongside our yearbook cover contest. All entries for our yearbook cover are due to Ms. Golden by November 30th. Music News: The Patterson Puma Pride Choir has begun rehearsing. We are preparing for our Veteran s Day Program and Winter/Holiday Program. In music class students have been working hard reviewing known concepts such as steady beat, rhythms, and music symbols. In October, 4 th grade, will begin working on their Winter Program music for December. PE News: During the month of October, we will kick off our Healthy Me Campaign. Each week the students in PE will be participating in a variety of team building activities, station activities, and a Volleyball unit. We will be incorporating a fruit of the week, a bone of the week, and SLOW-GO-WHOA foods. 5 PTO NEWS It is time to kick off our amazing school fundraiser and we need your help! Your child will be bringing home a fundraiser packet with all the information about our fundraiser on September 15th. HELP OUR SCHOOL! The money we raise will go towards funds to buy/install an awning over the playground. Your child will even have an opportunity to earn some great prizes in the process. Please make sure the top of the order form is completely filled out and that all the correct money is turned in. We do prefer checks made out to Patterson PTO over cash due to traceability. They can give them to their teacher or the front office. We can t thank you enough for the incredible support in making our fundraiser a great success! T-shirt & Sweaters order forms have been sent home twice, if you haven't ordered yours yet please get those in. The last date to order will be October 5th! Yearbook order forms have also gone out, if you order before December 31st they are cheaper! Summer Box Tops are due tomorrow, September 16th! The top two submissions in each grade will get to have lunch with Ms. Miller, very soon. Our Fall collection Due Date is November 28th, students will earn Box Tops bucks to buy gifts at the Box Tops store in December. We are in our room, 319, most Wednesdays if you ever want to come help or have any questions. We hope to see everyone next week at Parent Information Night, September 20th! 8 Parents, The Patterson Elementary Attendance Committee's goal is to encourage 97.1% attendance daily. Everyone knows the importance of perfect attendance. By being at school, on time, every single day the student is receiving the best opportunity to learn, as well as, showing a high degree of commitment to both the teacher and the class. We have set some Theme Days in place in hopes the kids will be excited about coming to school. Below are the days we have set. We will be sending home a letter closer to each date as a reminder.
