4 Energy policy and programming of the Region of Crete Unanimous Decisions of the Regional Council of Crete Modernisation, environmental upgrading, electricity back-up for the whole electricity system of Crete: incorporation of LNG Maximisation of the RES penetration in the energy system: new private investments for grid and off-grid installations, reverse pumping storage systems, promotion of all forms of RES, MSW energy recovery Maximisation of Rational Use of Energy and Energy Saving installations and measures: new private investments (tourism-services), reduction of electricity peaks... Continuous information-promotion campaigns: raising awareness, involvement of local authorities, interventions to schools, targeted exhibitions brochures

6 RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES INSTALLATIONS IN CRETE (1) 16 WIND PARKS: total installed power of 134,92 MW / Electricity ~ 13% / 5 more parks under construction BIOMASS: 8,9% of the total final energy consumption (Thermal uses: olive oil mills, bakeries, green houses, hotels, dwellings) BIOGAS: 2 combined heat/electricity installations SOLAR THERMAL COLLECTORS CENTRAL SOLAR SYSTEMS FOR HEATING WATER: m 2 (thermal energy producing 1.8% of the total energy demand) 20 Pilot central solar heating systems for hotels and SMEs 2 SOLAR AIR CONDITIONING systems

7 RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES INSTALLATIONS IN CRETE (2) PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS: (lighthouses, small hotels of ecological tourism, hotels and dwellings): 50 installations of 1 MW / Very strong recent demand! PASSIVE SOLAR SYSTEMS BIOCLIMATIC ARCHITECTURE: (Public buildings, Houses, schools, Research Institutes, etc.) 50 operating installations SMALL HYDRO: 2 installations of 0,6 MW / Total potential: 6 MW SHALLOW GEOTHERMY: 5 installations PUMP STORAGE SYSTEMS: Big pilot projects under study and implementation PILOT PROJECTS: Electricity production by solar thermal plants TOTAL RES INVESTMENTS: Over 200 millions EURO

8 RATIONAL USE OF ENERGY AND ENERGY SAVING INSTALLATIONS IN CRETE Penetration of technologies for Rational Use of Energy and Energy Saving (mainly in new buildings): Buildings insulation Use of double glasses Use of energy efficient electric light bulbs Many new installations, mainly in hotels, Rational Use of Energy and Energy Saving Volunteer interventions (coordinated by the Regional Energy Agency of Crete) of big energy consumers in Crete (hotels, Municipalities, pumping water plants, etc.) for reducing electricity demand during the summer peaks Specialised information campaign for schools, professionals, general public (leaflets, posters, speeches, TV spots, press, etc.)

13 BIODIESEL IN CRETE PILOT ACTIONS OF REAC Crete: Main touristic destination Huge production of used vegetable fats and oils in restaurants, hotels, etc. Possibilities of biodiesel production Identification of quantities and collection scenarios of used oils / Investors information Testing biodiesel (mixed with diesel in several percentages) in two public buses for several months / Cooperation with scientific bodies OTHER ACTIONS: Training of Greek technicians in Biodiesel / Development-Distribution of related DVD in Greek / Related signs on the buses/ Articles

14 INFORMATIVE VISUAL MATERIAL (DVD) FOR RES IN EUROPEAN ISLANDS 50 minutes DVD shows European islands (and Crete) are ideal for wide exploitation of Renewables 8 bodies and companies from Crete present their experience and activities in RES, proving Crete s possibilities to transform in an energy sustainable community Wide (and with no charge) distribution of the DVD in Crete s related bodies and Greek organisations

15 CLIMATE CHANGE AND ISLANDS The islands are the first victims of climate change! The need of special measures for facing the climate change in islands prerequisites the wide implementation of energy efficient technologies.

16 CO-OPERATION WITH ISLENET The island of Crete is one of the founding members of ISLENET Actual Presidency of the Islands Commission: Crete Dissemination point of ISLENET activities to the Greek islands Many common Projects (recent ones: 3-NITY, El Hierro, Green Hotel ) Need for fostering the cooperation: strategy issues / climate change / energy insular excellence / concrete projects

17 COVENANT OF ISLANDS Excellent idea: lead by example! EU: implement and fund a technical promotional support: Action plans production-monitoring, guidelines, benchmark examples, special logo, Covenant Days Formal recognition and public visibility-local commitment! Support and going beyond of Energy sustainable communities and islands Set targets mobilize stakeholders-implement projects/ plans/ actions monitoring/evaluation Share experience, know-how - promote best practices/excellence Regional Energy Agency of Crete will be actively involved in regional/local/european level.

18 Award by the European Commission of the Region of Crete and its Regional Energy Agency for Renewable Energy Sources The Region of Crete and its Regional Energy Agency were awarded in 2001 with the first Award for the Best Regional Renewable Energy Partnership in Europe, for the programming, the promotion and establishing Renewable Energy Sources plants in Crete. The Region of Crete and its Regional Energy Agency is partner of the «Sustainable Energy Europe Campaign».
