2 1 Geographical setting of Schleswig-Holstein and Nordfriesland Nordfriesland: one of the 13 administrative districts of Schleswig-Holstein (the northernmost federal state of Germany) is lying on the western edge of Schleswig-Holstein, famous with it s tourism destinations Sylt or St. Peter-Ording. Roundabout 165,000 inhabitants, economy mostly based on agriculture, tourism and windpower 2 Windpower installed power in Schleswig-Holstein Schleswig-Holstein a forerunner in the regenerative energy field. Schleswig-Holstein covers already 26% of its power consumption by wind energy. No other region in Germany has a comparable density of wind turbines. The most turbines can be found on the western edge, in Nordfriesland (399 MW installed power) and the southward district Dithmarschen (384 MW installed power). 3 Biomass Plants in Schleswig-Holstein In approx. 40 small production plants (biogas plants, wood-fuelled thermal power stations and strawfuelled thermal power stations) biomass is used for current and heat. In Schleswig-Holstein the energetic use of biomass has a part of 0,45 % of the consumption of current in Schleswig-Holsteins (Energiebilanz 2000) and a part of ca. 1 % of ist power consumption. 4 Nordfriesland: important activities in the biomass sector new energy husum: In october 2004 in Husum will take place the second new energy husum, exhibition and conference for bio and solar energy. The Business Development Corp. of Nordfriesland supports this event. The exhibition new energy husum will focus mainly bio- and solar energy. Special attention will be paid to the pellet-heating systems industry. One objective of the event will be to become a meeting point for customers and producers in the industry. Another hotspot of the tradeshow will be financing: Green Investment and Green Profits ( new energy aims to give an overview of all renewable energy systems used in house construction and for large appliance. Parallel to the trade fair, there will be a specialist congress. A committee of renowned European bioenergy experts are preparing the congress for new energy. The trade fair aims to combine the German and the Skandinavian market. The following special events are planned: innovation award, Triathlon Husum-Kopenhagen: rape-oil-rallye / electric vehicles / sailing vehicles. 3 Wiedingharder Energiegesellschaft (WEG) (search for project partners): Wiedingharde (in the north of Nordfriesland) ought to become a modell region with 100 % energy supply from renewable energies (heat, current and mobility). Shall be achieved through networking of different energy projects (wind, biogas, geothermie plants, solarthermie plants). Change in the energy supply through: - electrified integrated network with cable-connected consumers and direct feed-in. / conveyance through decentral small plants (regenerativ). - isolated and networked heat consumers and direct feed-in through decentral heat generators. - intelligent energy management (for example: energy economisation, decentral construction and networking of energy producers, intelligent consumption management). Per kilo-watt-hour (kwh) minimum payments are defined, differentiated for the wind, solar, water, biomass or geothermie sector. 7 Intelligent Energy - Europe Within this support programme Schleswig-Holstein is interested in being active in the field of the biomass utilisation. 4 8 Selected companies within the New Energies Sector in Schleswig-Holstein (beyond the windenergy sector) A market leader in the area of energy from biomass: farmatic biotech energy ag farmatic biotech energy ag one of the leading companies in the area of industrial conversion of biomass into renewable energy. farmatic has the innovative concepts and technological competence for active environmental protection on a global scale. Founded in 1963 the company has developed into a market and technology leader within the industrial conversion of biomass and slurry into regenerative energy. The international business activities of farmatic are focussed on the concepts, planning, construction and operation of bio-power plants. However, farmatic is also active in the field of biological sewage treatment both in Germany and abroad. The company's constantly expanding research and development department forms the basis for the firm s successful development in the new millennium: the biotechnological conversion of biogas into natural gas quality and the considerable increase in economic efficiency this would achieve. By 2002/2003 the biogas produced by farmatic's bio-power plants should already be suitable for feeding into the nation's natural gas network or for use as fuel for motorists available at regular gas stations. The next milestone for farmatic's R&D division will be the use of biogas, in natural gas quality, as a primary energy source for fuel cells in vehicles and households. farmatic employs 182 workers, 100 thereof in Schleswig- Holstein (sales 2001: 35,1 mill. ). The Rendsburg Centre for Energy and Technology (ZET) The Rendsburg Centre for Energy and Technology is a technology centre with the focus on new energy and an ideal development platform for young, innovative entrepreneurs with the goal of offering technological, method-based products and services, especially companies engaged in the creation and marketing of alternative energy and the optimisation of the relevant techniques. Companies in the technology centre receive extensive support : Consulting and advice for the business set-up, expansion and marketing strategies Supply of business contacts Support with the search for optimal financing Equity capital / share participation up to Technology transfer Energy Foundation Schleswig-Holstein (Energy Foundation Schleswig-Holstein) The energy foundation supports advancement in the area of climate protection through own projects and through financial funding of relevant projects. The main goals are the research, development and propagation of knowledge and measures of climate protection, efficient use of energy and the reduction of C02 emissions in the areas of energy usage, energy reconversion and renewable energy.
