2 Overview The activities beig proposed i the Essetial Package will be for HBC voluteers to assess the eeds of youg childre ad their caregivers, who have bee ifected or affected by HIV/AIDS, at the household level as well as to empower caregivers by icreasig their kowledge to care for their childre. These activities have grow out of years of research doe by orgaizatios like Save the Childre ad commuities who have studied the eeds of these childre ad the types of services that are required to address their eeds. However, the evidece has also show that the eeds of youg childre (0 to 8) are ot beig met due to curret service delivery mechaisms e.g. mostly through primary school. Thus, ew job aides have bee developed to provide HBC voluteers ad caregivers a user friedly way to address the eeds of youger childre, ot yet i primary school, while at the same time assessig the overall wellbeig of their caregivers. The participats for these mobilizatio meetigs should iclude OVC committees, commuity leaders, local govermet officials ad caregivers. The iformatio provided will be preseted i a trasparet way so that participats are clear as to how the proposed activities will be carried out by the HBC voluteers. Overall Objective The overall objective of these meetigs will be to establish agreemet o why it is critical to assess ad provide services for youg childre ad their caregivers who are affected by HIV/AIDS.

3 First Meetig Specific Objective: The purpose of the first meetig is to create cosesus o why it is ecessary to work with caregivers to meet the essetial eeds of childre 0-8 i households affected by HIV/ AIDS. The discussio will provide key messages about how childre are affected by the disease, specific activities that ca help caregivers meet their childre s eeds ad a clear timeframe for partership with the orgaizatio i order to carry out these activities. Descriptio Participats will: Idetify how childre are affected by HIV/AIDS Agree o a list of activities ad their desired commitmet Be motivated to participate i these activities or idetify what they will do to support these activities Establish a time frame for carryig out the activities Time: 2 hours Materials: Picture from Paretig Essetial Package Flipchart Paper ad Markers or Chalkboard ad Chalk, if possible Participats: Home-based care voluteers (OVC Committee Member ad Commuity Leaders, depedig o your project) Facilitator: Local NGO staff member Steps: 1. Welcome the participats ad thak them for their presece at this meetig. Next, explai that this commuity was selected to participate i this activity due to the curret work beig doe by the HBC voluteers who are assessig the eeds of youg childre who are livig i a household affected by HIV/AIDS. 2. Discuss/clarify the objectives of the meetig with participats. 3. Tell participats that to ease the discussio, you are goig to start by showig them a picture ad you will thereafter cotiue the discussio based o what they have see. 4. 4 usig the followig questios: What do you see i this picture? What do you otice about the adult? What do you otice about the childre? Have you see this i the households where you visit? 5. Ivite participats to share examples based o their experieces. 6. Ask participats what they thik are the eeds of youg childre (0-8) livig i homes affected by HIV/AIDS i order for them to be happy, lear ad grow? 7. Have participats share their ideas ad ote all the ideas o the flipchart/chalk board. 8. Summarize all the ideas oted o the flipchart/chalk board ad share ay of the key messages ot already metioed i the discussio. For example: Childre eed access to educatio, protectio, health ad utritio services as well as support groups i the commuity. Childre eed the presece of a carig adult to provide affectio ad attetio to their eeds so that they ca lear ad grow. There are may types of caregivers for these childre: sibligs, gradparets, exteded family members ad others. These differet caregivers also eed support to provide care to youg childre. Tools that will be used durig this activity: 9. The facilitator explais that the orgaizatio has studied the eeds of childre ad caregivers i households affected by HIV/AIDS ad has created two tools that may help the HBC voluteer to better assess the eeds of youg childre ad their caregivers which have bee discussed above. 10. Next preset the tools ad discuss with participats the purpose ad the idea behid each tool by followig the steps below: Tell participats that whe the HBC voluteers visit the households, they would use simple tools that would guide them to observe childre as well as work with the caregivers to highlight childre s health, hygiee, protectio ad learig eeds. The HBC voluteers would the share their feedback o each household ad how they liked usig the tools with each other ad the orgaizatio s staff durig mothly meetigs. Next, discuss with the participats what they hope happes i these households? 5 kowledge to care for their youg childre ad to hopefully adopt ew practices as well as icreased access to eeded services withi the commuity. The facilitator should the ask the HBC voluteers what they eed i order to participate i this activity ad to be able to use the tools? Use the participat s feedback about what they eed from the orgaizatio to fill i the left side of the table. Welcome the participats ad thak them for their presece at this meetig. 2. Warm-up: Facilitator asks if a participat ca lead group i head, shoulders, kees ad toes sog or aother sog with movemet. 3. Review key messages from last meetig: Why is it importat that we work with caregivers to esure that childre have opportuities to lear ad grow? 4. What did you observe sice the last meetig? Participats share their observatios about youg childre s eeds made durig their home visits. 5. Review commitmet: What would the orgaizatio provide ad what would voluteers do i additio to their regular resposibilities? 6. Household Caregivers Coset: Before the voluteers participate i the traiig, they should ask the primary caregivers i the households they serve if they also coset to participatig i the ew activity i order to lear more about how to meet their eeds ad the eeds of their childre. Voluteers should first create iterest by sharig some of the ideas discussed i the steps above durig the first meetig. I their coversatio with the primary caregivers, voluteers should make sure that they explai the time ivolved to participate i the ew activity i additio to other people ivolved i household visits (Comprehesive Checklist eumerator ad NGO staff member) before the caregivers give their coset: There will be someoe visitig the primary caregivers (share the dates of the baselie) i their home to fid out more about their eeds ad how the ew iformatio that that voluteer has ca be useful to them. This survey should take approximately two hours of their time. Each visit, i additio to the existig home-based care activities, the voluteer will ask additioal questios ad share iformatio about ways to help caregivers assist their childre to lear ad grow. Sometimes, there will be aother perso accompayig the voluteer (the NGO staff member) durig these home visits. This is the voluteer metor. His/her role will be to observe ad lear how the tools are beig used so that the NGO ca work with the voluteer to improve the tools. If the primary caregiver agrees to participatig i the above activities, Coset Letter (sample o page 9.) Household Iformatio: The facilitator collects the iformatio from the voluteers about the umber ad ages of adults ad childre i the household. This will aid the program staff i costructig the sample for the comprehesive checklist iterviews (baselie) i each commuity.
