2 Course Description: Course Prerequisite(s) Introduction to game and simulation development. Includes analysis of existing applications and creation of a game using an existing game engine. In-depth coverage of the essential elements of game design. Also covers an overview of cultural history of electronic games, survey of the major innovators, and examination of the trends and taboos that motivate game design. FREQUENT REQUISITES Departmental approval Academic Discipline/CTE Program Learning Outcomes Course Student Learning Outcomes (SLO): 4 to 7 Learning Objectives (Numbering system should be linked to SLO - e.g., 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.) Prepare a design document for a solo game Develop a game or simulation based on the solo design documentation Jointly develop the design documentation for a team project Develop a game or simulation based on the team design documentation 1. Summarize the evolution of the electronic game industry. 2. Explain essential game and simulation elements. 3. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of game and simulation systems 4. Identify programmatic and graphical elements of a development system 5. Develop a concept document and simple game Summarize the evolution of the electronic game industry. Learn about the history of games from an analytical point of view. Explain essential game and simulation elements. Analyze existing and future games to understand what constitutes a game. Evaluate the strengths and limitations of game and simulation systems Analyze existing and future games to understand capabilities, requirements, and demographics. Identify programmatic and graphical elements of a development system Create a basic video game using industry standard design practices. Develop a concept document and simple game Conceive and create an original video game. IF YOU ARE NOT PRESENT IN CLASS, YOU ARE NOT PARTICIPATING AND YOUR GRADE WILL REFLECT THAT AT THE END OF THE SEMESTER. Program/Disciplin e Requirements: If HCC Grading Scale Instructor Grading Criteria A = points per semester hour B = 89-80: 3 points per semester hour C = 79-70: 2 points per semester hour D = 69-60: 1 point per semester hour 59 and below = F IP (In Progress) W(Withdrawn) I (Incomplete) AUD (Audit) IP (In Progress) is given only in certain developmental courses. The student must re-enroll to receive credit. COM (Completed) is given in non-credit and continuing education courses. To compute grade point average (GPA), divide the total grade points by the total number of semester hours attempted. The grades "IP," "COM" and "I" do not affect GPA. 50% - Homework and Class Participation 15% - Midterm Exam 15% - Final Exam 10% - Finished 5% - Completed Pitch Document 5% - Completed Concept Document
