Rationale for proposal: Management information systems are fundamental to modern business. This is a required course for all business majors. This is an update to the course with changes that allow sections of the course to be taught in a hybrid or online environment. 3. Justifications for (answer N/A if not applicable) Similarity to other courses: N/A Prerequisites: This course is a 3000 level course because it is an intermediate-level Business course, and an understanding of basic computer concepts is necessary, which is why BUS 1950 is a prerequisite. Co-requisites: N/A Enrollment restrictions: Junior Standing and Admission to a School of Business Major or Minor ensure adequate preparation for the course. Online/Hybrid delivery justification & assurances (answer N/A if not applicable) Online or hybrid delivery justification: Offering and instructing this course through a hybrid or online model allows and increases the enrollment probability of students in the Summer semester who have moved away from campus and may attempt an equivalent course at another institution. An online course gives EIU the opportunity to market to these students as well as other students interested in taking the course in an alternative format. Instruction: Lectures from the face-to-face courses will be recorded and posted online for students to view. Other online components (e.g., tutorials, videos, discussions) will be included. All faculty who will deliver this course online are/will be OCDI (or appropriate equivalent) trained. Integrity: Students will take quizzes and exams through an online testing taking monitoring system, or they will take them at a proctored facility such as a community college in their area. Interaction: At the discretion of the faculty, provisions and requirements would vary but generally will utilize , Web-Based Discussions, and Web-conferencing.

4 Model Syllabus (Part II) Please include the following information: 1. Course number and title: BUS3500 Management Information Systems 2. Catalog description: An introduction to MIS by management level. Special emphasis is given to database design and use. Other topics include: telecommunications, types of IS, approaches to systems development, and security. Prepackaged software will be used in case, problem-solving, and simulation situations. 3. Learning objectives. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the concept of a computer based information system including detailed knowledge of the system components and how they evolved and interact. 2. Summarize the database management system concept; its evolution, functions, uses, and types. 3. Solve a database problem using appropriate design methodologies. Demonstrate database creation, manipulation, queries, and forms and reports generation (QR 1-6). 4. Describe fundamental data communications and telecommunications concepts. Use Internet technology to research and analyze information (WCR 1-6). 5. Summarize types of data communication networks typically found in businesses (CT 3). 6. Distinguish and relate transaction processing systems, office automation systems, decision support systems, expert systems, and executive information systems. Compare their components, major uses, benefits, and limitations (CT 2-3). 7. Explain the use of the systems development life cycle and alternative analysis and design methods to solve business problems (CT 2, WCR 1-3). 8. Utilize typical business software packages to solve business problems (QR1-6). 9. Describe the role of computer security, privacy, and ethics in today s business organizations (CT 2,5 WCR 1-3). 4.
