Course Name: Fundamentals of Information Security 2. Course #: CITP Catalog Course Description: This course synthesizes technical material covered in prior courses to monitor, audit, analyze, and revise computer and network security systems to ensure appropriate levels of protection are in place 4. Prerequisites: ITNW Program Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to determine the correct ethical response to a given situation in the information technology field with respect to a business. Students will be able to determine the proper tools and possible approaches required to develop a solution to a particular problem and be able to competently explain or justify their choices when necessary. Students will be able to correctly implement a solution to a problem based on a preexisting design. 6. Course Learning Outcomes: Review security plan to ensure appropriate level of protection; (System Security, Cryptography) Implement network security design; (Network Infrastructure) Audit network system based on security design; (Assessments and Audits) Use relevant tools to maintain security requirements; (Assessments and Audits) Review all security policies and procedures on a regular basis. (Access Control, Organizational Security) 7. Departmental Course Requirements, Evaluation Methods, and Grading Criteria: Course Requirements: Attendance: Attendance and class participation in this online course will be based on the student s activity in the course site throughout the semester, such as: progressing through course content modules and topic review quizzes; posting items in group discussion/chat and class help; as well as the student s LabSim activity and progress. An active involvement in discussion board topics and group teamwork are vital to a rich online learning experience. View the course as a learning community. Refer to the Attendance policy as stated in the STC Catalog (Pg. 42) for the complete attendance policy. Student Success: In an effort to ensure your success in this course, I strongly suggest that you spend extra time outside of class reviewing class notes, reading your textbook and taking that extra effort to familiarize yourself with course content. Oral Communication: Students will engage in oral communication while presenting a hands-on driven individual project.

2 Teaching Method: Lecture, homework, in-class/out-of class assignment/exercises, presentations, and team/individual projects will be used to aid in understanding and applying advanced web design techniques. Hands-on Labs and Individual project: Throughout the session, students will engage in hands-on activities through LabSim in order to gain extensive hands-on experience and to encounter real-world scenarios as it relates to information security. Additionally, the student will be required to complete case study questions demonstrating knowledge of the subject matter and conveying formal business communication. More will be discussed about the case studies. Group Assignments: Students will be assigned to groups of 4 and required to collectively participate in group discussions through blackboard on topics ranging from ethics to IT security scenarios. Group members will be expected to help each other with LabSim modules and to assist each other by posting and answering questions Evaluation Methods: Exams 35% Final Exam 15% Discussion/Quizzes 15% Group Assignment 20% Labs 15% Total 100% Grading Criteria: A, B, C, D, 59-0 F 8. Students work in a casework project that uses information technology techniques that require understanding of mathematical operations. 2. All student assignments must provide logical support for their selection of case and information technology tool. 3. Personal Qualities Personal quality applications: Responsibility Self-Esteem Sociability Self-Management Integrity and Honesty Individual and group assignments require the students to set goals, practice selfmanagement, and monitor progress. To aid in the development of social acumen, self-responsibility, self-direction, integrity, and honor, students must respect their fellow students by arriving to class on time, attending each assigned class meeting, and participating actively in class and group discussions and assignments. If a student is unable to attend class and or is unable to meet with their assigned group, the student contacts the instructor or group leader as appropriate.

Technology Select Technology Apply Technologies Maintain and Troubleshoot Equipment Students must use class time and facility resources efficiently as they accomplish their assigned tasks. Student individual and teamwork assignments must follow a schedule given on the first day of class. Teamwork tasks are a major component of assignments and student evaluation. Students are tasked and measured during the group assignment on their ability to incorporate their acumen and civic virtue (i.e., self-responsibility, willingness to compromise, and community commitment). Student must become familiar with the main role of information technologies in the management of business. Students must acquire a basic knowledge of information technology tools for management and ability to work with some of them. Students develop the understanding that technologies in general, and information technologies, in particular, are complex techno macro and micro social systems. The student casework project seeks to highlight the human, technical, and managerial factors involved in all technological projects. The delivery of the course content and student assignments require and make full use of all information technology services available at STC. Furthermore, the student casework project requires the use of a specific information technology in an organization. *U.S. Department of Labor Secretary s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS Information):
