A survey of the social, political, economic, cultural, religious, and intellectual history of the world from the emergence of human cultures through the 15th century. The course examines major cultural regions of the world in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania and their global interactions over time. Themes include the maritime expiration and transoceanic empires, nation/state formation and industrialization, imperialism, global conflicts and resolutions, and global economic integration. The course emphasizes the development, interaction and impact of global exchange. Course Prerequisite: Must have successfully completed or be co-enrolled in Engl1301 Course Student Learning Outcomes (PLO): Students will be able to: 1. create an argument through the use of historical evidence 2.analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources 3.analyze the effects of historical, social, political, economic, cultural and global forces on this period of History 4. explain the importance of chronology and how earlier ideas and events shaped later events. Course (Student) Learning Outcomes for Hist2321 (SLO): Students will be able to: 1. describe and analyze the major periods of world history, describe and analyze the global connections in world history, in terms of politics, economics, geography and technology. 3. analyze the causes and impacts of major turning points in world history. 4. describe and critically analyze primary and secondary sources. 5. describe and analyze the role of scientific and technological innovation in world history 6. describe their own roles and responsibilities in global society. 7. describe and analyze the role of scientific and technological innovation in world history 8. analyze the developments that have influenced the structure and contentof the contemporary world. Core Objectives: Through the Texas Core Curriculum, students will gain a foundation of knowledge of human cultures and the physical and natural world, develop principles of personal and social responsibility for living in a diverse world, and advance intellectual and practical skills that are essential for all learning. History classes will concentrate on the following:

2 Critical Thinking Skills - to include creative thinking, innovation, inquiry, and analysis, evaluation and synthesis of information Communication Skills - to include effective development, interpretation and expression of ideas through written, oral and visual communication Social Responsibility: to include intercultural competence, knowledge of civic responsibility, and the ability to engage effectively in regional, national, and global communities Personal Responsibility - to include the ability to connect choices, actions and consequences to ethical decision-making Guidelines Instructional Methods: Read textbooks & primary documents, online materials, Interactive Online Discussion, papers, Semester Writing Assignment Student Assignments & Student Assessments: exams, a movie paper, reflection papers and participation in class discussions. Instructional Materials: Textbook: The Earth and Its People to 1550, vol 2, 6th edition ISBN Monographs: Achebe, Chinua, Things Fall Apart Winchester, The Man Who Loved China Online assigned readings Students are required to obtain all books and online resources: Students will be responsible for all information from all sources for all assignments. Students must not collaborate on the exams in any way (including the use of materials from former students) and must not copy material from any source to use as their essay answers or discussion contributions. See the HCCS Student Handbook for details. Cheating is not that hard to define and as college students, you should have a firm idea about what cheating is. Just to be clear, here are a few simple definitions: - Cheating is: Copying from another student's exam. - Cheating is: During a exam, using materials not authorized by the person giving the exam. - Cheating is: Collaborating with another student during a exam without proper authority. - Cheating is: Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, transporting, or soliciting in whole or part the contents of an exam or paper.

3 - Cheating is: Bribing another person to obtain a copy of an exam. - Cheating is: Plagiarism which means using someone's work or someone's ideas and representing them to be your own. That "someone" may be another student, a friend, a relative, a book author, an author of material on a web site, etc. Do not take material from anywhere without giving proper credit or reference. In other words, do not copy from an Internet source and paste it into your essay answer space. - Cheating is: Collusion, which means the unauthorized collaboration with another person in preparing written work offered for credit when you represent that work to be your own. All papers will be submitted to Turnitin.com, which is a service HCCS subscribes to for identifying plagiarized material. In this class, anyone caught cheating will be awarded an F for the course. ALL WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS ARE TO BE DONE BY YOU, WRITTEN IN YOUR WORDS, NOT SOMEONE ELSE S. If you ever have any question about what is cheating, what is plagiarism or what is unauthorized collusion, please contact your instructor before you do anything or submit anything. It is much better to ask first than to get caught later. Student Attendance: Attendance and class discussion are critical to learning history. If there is a problem feel free to contact me at ; if I am unavailable, leave a message for me or send me a message through . I will return local calls within 48 hours. If you leave a message, DO NOT leave a pager or a voice mail number. Leave only a number where I can speak to you I will not return calls to leave a message nor will I discuss the situation with anyone other than the student. Please be aware: I do not have access to long distance service. Please leave a local (Houston) number; if you are calling long distance, please call back. Failure to sign in to the class regularly will result falling behind and possibly missing due dates. Eagle Online provides me with tools to monitor your participation online. If you do not sign into class during the first 2 weeks of class and complete the required assignments, I will drop you for nonattendance. After the the official date of attendance, should I see that you have not signed in regularly or participated in discussions, I will NOT drop you from class. Dropping this class is YOUR responsibility. - if you do not sign into Eagle online at all before the end of the 12th day of class, you will be withdrawn from the course -- NO EXCEPTIONS! - If during the semester you simply quit participating, fail to complete the required course work, and do not withdraw yourself from class, you will receive a course grade of 'FX. 3-peaters: NOTICE: HCC Course Withdrawal Policy - Beginning Fall 2007, the State of Texas imposes penalties on students who drop courses excessively. Students are limited to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their educational career at a Texas public college or university. To help you avoid having to drop/withdraw from any class, contact your DE professor regarding your academic performance. You may also want to contact your DE counselor to learn about helpful HCC resources (e.g. online tutoring, child care, financial aid, job placement, etc.). HCC has instituted an Early Alert process by which your professor may alert you and DE counselors that you might fail a class because of excessive absences and/or poor academic performance. Students should check HCC s Academic Calendar by Term for drop/withdrawal dates and deadlines. If a student decides to drop or withdraw from a class upon careful review of other options, the student can drop online prior to the deadline through their HCC Student Service Center:

4 Classes of other duration (mini-term, flex-entry, 8-weeks, etc.) may have different final withdrawal deadlines. Please contact the HCC Registrar s Office at to determine mini-term class withdrawal deadlines. Withdrawal Deadline: It is your responsibility to withdraw officially from a class and prevent an F from appearing on your transcript. When considering withdrawal from a course, remember that: No grade is given and your transcript reflects no record of the course if you withdraw before the Official Date of Record. A W (indicating withdrawal) appears on your transcript if you drop a course after the Official Date of Record and before the final deadline. The final deadline to drop the course is by 4:30pm INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: Receiving a W in a course may affect the status of your student Visa. Once a W is given for the course, it will not be changed to an F because of the visa consideration. If a student is dropped for any reason, he/she will NOT be reinstated and assigned an F. NO EXCEPTIONS. Since January 1, 2003, International Students are restricted in the number of distance education courses that they may take during each semester. ONLY ONE online/distance education class may be counted towards the enrollment requirement for International Students per semester. Please contact the International Student Office at if you have any questions about your visa status and other transfer issues. Student Course Reinstatement Policy: Students have a responsibility to arrange payment for their classes when they register, either through cash, credit card, financial aid, or the installment plan. Faculty members have a responsibility to check their class rolls regularly, especially during the early weeks of a term, and reconcile the official class roll to ensure that no one is attending class whose name does not appear on the rolls. Students who are dropped from their courses for non-payment of tuition and fees, who request reinstatement after the official date of record (OE date), can be reinstated by making payment in full and paying an additional $75 per course reinstatement fee. A student requesting reinstatement should present the registrar with a completed Enrollment Authorization Form with the signature of the instructor, the department chair, or the dean, who should verify that the student has been regularly attending class. Students who are reinstated are responsible for all course policies and procedures, including attendance requirements. A dean may waive the reinstatement fee upon determination that the student was dropped because of a college error. The dean should note the nature of the error in a memo to the registrar with the appropriate documentation. Course Requirements: You will have 2 essay exams using responsdus monitor, a paper on a movie, 5 one-page reflection papers over the assigned readings, and class discussions. Exams: All exams will be administered on campus, through respondus monitor. This will be a proctored exam and will only be available on the dates listed on the course schedule. More detailed instructions can be found in the course in the exam folder. Program/Discipline Requirements: A minimum of 50% of the student s semester average must come from writing assignments. HCC Grading Scale: A % B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69%
