1 CSG 1205 Microsoft PowerPoint - Web Course Description: This is an introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint The course will include lessons on creating and modifying a presentation, working with charts, embedding and linking objects, working with masters, customizing a presentation and using slide show features. It is assumed the student is familiar with Microsoft Windows. This course is taught over the web. Credit: One Semester Hour Prerequisite: None Textbook: GO! With Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, Comprehensive. Pearson Education. ISBN Student data files come with the textbook and are on a CD located inside the back cover. Alternatively, student data files are available in BlackBoard Assessment/Tutorial software (myitlab) access code. Let me know if you do not have an access code and I will get one for you. Instructor: Doug Stockley Office: A-326 Phone: 815/ doug_stockley@ivcc.edu Web: Attendance: Since this is a web course, daily attendance will not be taken. However, regular class participation is important and expected for successful completion of this course. On or before the 10 th day of the course (01/24/12) you need to submit homework in order for me to verify that you are attending. Half of the coursework (assignments, quizzes and exams) is due by midterm (03/05/12). The remainder of the coursework is due by 05/07/12. It is your responsibility to keep me informed about your progress and your intent to complete the course. Communication from you to me by or other means should occur on a weekly basis beginning with the first day of the course. Lack of communication will be considered a failure to participate in the course and you may be withdrawn or your course grade may be lowered. Cheating: Policies regarding cheating may be found under the heading of Academic Integrity in the IVCC Student Handbook. Students should become familiar with these policies and abide by them.

2 Plagiarism: According to Webster, to plagiarize is to steal or pass off the ideas or words of another as one s own to use created productions without crediting the source to commit literary theft to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. Students are responsible for authenticating any assignment submitted to an instructor. If asked, you must be able to produce proof that the assignment you submit is actually your own work. Therefore, we recommend that you engage in a verifiable working process on assignments. Keep copies of all drafts of your work, make photocopies of research materials, write summaries or research materials, keep logs or journals of your work on assignments and papers, learn to save drafts or versions of assignments under individual file names on computer diskette, etc. The inability to authenticate your work, should an instructor request it, is a sufficient ground for failing the assignment. Also, instructors may employ various other means of ascertaining authenticity such as engaging in Internet searches, creating quizzes based on student work, requiring students to explain their work and/or process orally, etc. Withdrawal: The instructor or the student may initiate a withdrawal up to the final withdraw date. The last date for a student to withdraw is 04/09/12. Students may initiate a withdrawal from classes by talking with their instructor, completing the form in the Records Office or through the form located within WebAdvisor. The college has the right to rescind a withdrawal in cases of academic dishonesty or at the instructor s discretion. Failure of the student taking the initiative to withdraw will lead to the assignment of a letter grade at the conclusion of the course. Note: Students should be aware of the impact of a withdrawal on full-time status for insurance purposes and for financial aid. It is highly recommended that students meet with their instructor or with a counselor before withdrawing from a class to discuss if a withdrawal is the best course of action for that particular student. Incompletes: A temporary grade of Incomplete may be issued at the end of the course only in cases where the instructor determines that extenuating circumstances exist and a majority of the coursework has been completed. Course requirements must be completed before the end of the following semester and a letter grade assigned or the temporary grade of Incomplete will change to a permanent grade of F. Disabilities: If you need support or assistance because of a disability, you may be eligible for academic accommodations through the IVCC Special Populations Office; Rm. B- 204; Phone 815/ Grades: Final grades will be assigned based upon the student s accumulated points. Points will be awarded for exams, tutorials, and assignments using the factors of

3 completeness, timeliness and accuracy. Letter grades will equate to the following scale: A 100% - 90% B 89% - 80% C 79% - 70% D 69% - 60% Assignments: Follow the course syllabus. Since this is a web-based course you will complete assignments and then submit them as attachments. On occasion, a PowerPoint presentation may use additional files to facilitate the presentation (Ex..wav sound file or Excel table or chart). Make sure that all of the files accompany each presentation. For most assignments I will be grading the finished product (PPTX file) instead of the printouts that the text may instruct you to make. All of the assignments must be turned in before you take the final exam. Note - When attaching multiple files to s, place them in one zipped file using the Windows XP or VISTA or Windows 7 compression (zip) utility. A zipped file may contain multiple files and folders. Please do not use other zipping utilities such as WinRar Note Student data files for completing the assignments may be obtained from several locations. Inside the back cover of your text you should find a Student Resource CD also, instructions to download student data files from Additionally, I have made the student data files available to you through your BlackBoard course at the External Links button. Follow the link to the publisher s download site. Schedule Use the following schedule as a guide. Half of the coursework is due by midterm. The remainder of the coursework is due by 05/07/12. Overview Each week you will have book assignments. The chapters are designed to lead you through PowerPoint tasks while on a computer. Chapters are divided into Projects (A and B). At the conclusion of each project make sure you save your work. As mentioned previously, I will not be grading any printouts since this is a web based course. I will be grading the file(s) that you save for each project. At the end of each chapter you will find a number of Assessments and you will be assigned one to turn in for a grade. Follow the steps in the assessment and send me your file(s). An online tutorial/assessment product called myitlab will be used for this course. Toward the end of week 1 I will provide you with more information on how to use this product. There will be one myitlab practice exam that will go along with each chapter of the book. You will not need to send me anything from myitlab. It automatically grades your work and both you and I will be able to see your scores. In BlackBoard, under Assignments, you will find a multiple choice quiz that goes along with each chapter in the book. These quizzes are automatically scored and posted to your BlackBoard gradebook. I would recommend that you take the BlackBoard quiz and the myitlab assessment after you have completed each chapter.

4 Myitlab Each chapter will have a tutorial and a practice test. The only Myitlab score that I will use to calculate your course grade is the Myitlab final exam. The Myitlab chapter activities are NOT worth points, however, these activities will help to prepare you for taking the Myitlab final exam. Most students will not do well on the Myitlab final exam without reviewing the Myitlab chapter assignments.
