1 BIO 209 Anatomy & Physiology II Professor: Office hours: Course Prerequisites Anatomy and Physiology I Introduction This is the second course in a two-course sequence that investigates the cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems of the human body. In this course, the focus is on the endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems. Required Textbook Hole s Human Anatomy and Physiology, 12 th Edition, Shier, Butler, Lewis, McGraw Hill., Copyright Course Description This is the second part of Human Anatomy & Physiology. We are going to study the fundamental building blocks of the human body structure, functions and some disorders using an organ system approach. We are going to focus on the endocrine, cardiovascular, immune, respiratory, urinary and digestive system and their interactions with each other. The laboratory portion of this course is integrated with the lecture portion and will reinforce many of the concepts presented in discussions and in the text. This will be accomplished through organ dissections, model studies and simulation labs. We will also examine how certain malfunctions in these systems affect the delicate balance known as homeostasis and how the body compensates to maintain itself. Course Objectives 1. You will continue to explore the organ systems of the body, their structure and their function. Most importantly, you will learn how the interaction of these systems provides for the natural functional state of the body known as homeostasis. You will also see how disruptions to the function of one organ system may be compensated by other systems. 2. You will learn about the following organ systems: Endocrine System Cardiovascular System Immune System Respiratory System Urinary System Digestive System 1

Exams missed due to an excused (medical) absence must be made up within a week of returning to classes. It is each student s responsibility to be informed of exam dates, paper due dates, required course activities, etc. before making any travel plans during the semester. 4 Week Lab Learning Outcomes 1 NO LAB 2 Endocrine Glands: Models & Anatomy & Physiology Revealed (APR) Survey of major endocrine glands using models and histological slides and digital anatomy modules from APR. Name and locate the major endocrine glands. Sketch and label tissue sections from the pituitary gland, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, adrenal glands, and pancreas. Associate the principal hormones secreted by each of the major glands. 3 Blood Lab: Student subject (self) To review the characteristics of blood cells, to examine them microscopically, and to perform a differential white blood cell count and tests for percentage hematocrit. To determine the ABO blood type of a blood sample and to observe an Rh blood-typing test. Identify and sketch red blood cells, five types of white blood cells, and platelets. Perform and interpret the results of a differential white blood cell count. Determine the hematocrit in a blood sample. Judge the results of the blood test compared to normal values. Analyze the basis of ABO blood typing. Match the ABO type of a blood sample. 4 Heart Anatomy: Models, APR & dissection To review the structural characteristics of the human heart and to examine the major features of a mammalian heart. Identify and label the major structural features of the human heart and closely associated blood vessels. Match heart structures with appropriate locations and functions. Compare the features of the human heart with those of another mammal (sheep or cow). 5 ECG & Heart Sounds: Student subject (self) Recording of ECG and heart sounds using LabTutor Experiment (ADlnstrument) Record and identify the major components of the human ECG as well as timings of these components. Students will correlate heart sounds, components of the ECG with mechanical activity of the heart. 6 Blood Pressure: Student subject (self) Recording blood pressure using LabTutor Experiment (ADlnstrument) Students will measure blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope or microphone. They will also assess changes in peripheral circulation and the effects of cuff location. 7 Cardiovascular Effects of Exercise/ Review: Student subject (self) LabTutor Experiment (ADlnstrument) Study how heart rate and finger pulse change after different exercise regimes. Students will determine the factors that control heart rate and blood flow to tissues before, during and after exercise. 8 Lab Practical 1 (MIDTERM) 9 Breathing: Student subject (self) LabTutor Experiment (ADInstrument) 10 Kidney Anatomy: Models, APR & dissection To review the structure of the kidney, to dissect a kidney(triple injected sheep kidney), and to observe the major structures of a nephron. 11 Urinalysis: Student subject (self) To perform the observations and tests commonly used to analyze the characteristics and composition of urine. Students investigate the effects of breath holding, hyperventilation and rebreathing using a respiratory belt transducer around the abdomen. The relation between breathing and heart rate are also studied. Locate and identify the organs of the urinary system. Locate and identify the major structures of a kidney. Identify and sketch the major structures of a nephron. Trace the path of filtrate through a renal nephron. Trace the path of blood through the renal blood vessels. Evaluate the color, transparency, and specific gravity of a urine sample. Measure the ph of a urine sample. Test a urine sample for the presence of glucose, protein, ketones, bilirubin, and hemoglobin. Perform a microscopic study of urine sediment. Summarize the results of these observations and tests. 4

5 12 Digestive Anatomy: Models & APR To review the structure and function of the digestive organs and to examine the tissues of these organs. Locate and label the digestive organs and their major structures. Examine and sketch the structures of tissue sections of these organs. Match digestive organs with their descriptions.
