Office: Science Bldg., Room S teak.lee@blinn.edu 3. Course Description: Biology 2401 Anatomy and Physiology I: Principles of structure and function of the human body. Anatomy and Physiology I is the first course in a two semester sequence which examines the systems of the human body using an integrated approach. The chemistry of life provides a foundation to investigate the major organ systems of the body. The areas of study include structure and function of cells, histology, the physiological and anatomical aspects of support and movement systems and the nervous system. 4. Prerequisite: Biol 1406 with a grade of C or better or approval of the division chair on the relevant campus. Chem 1407 or 1411 are recommended. Three class hours and three laboratory hours per week. Credit: Four semester hours. 5. Core Curriculum Course: This is a course in the 42-hour Core Curriculum of Blinn College. As such, students will develop proficiency in the appropriate intellectual competencies, exemplary educational objectives and perspectives. Course Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes: These learning outcomes and course objectives will include the student demonstrating competence in the following areas: 1) Explain the principle of complementarity of structure and function. 2) Relate homeostasis to feedback mechanisms. 3) Use correct anatomical terms to describe the human body. 4) Explain the major molecular structures basic to life. 5) Describe the anatomy and physiology of cells. 6) Compare the structures and functions of major tissue types. 7) Explain the integumentary system histology and function, including repair, cancer and thermoregulation. 8) Describe the formation, anatomy, and physiology of bones and how they facilitate movement. 9) Explain the sequence of events during muscle contraction and properly identify human muscles. 10) Describe neural physiology and components of the central and peripheral nervous systems. 7. Civility Notification Statement: If a student is asked to leave the classroom because of uncivil behavior, the student may not return to that class until he or she arranges a conference with the instructor. It is the student's responsibility to arrange for this conference. 11. Course Requirements: Lecture Exams: There will be three lecture exams, which will each consist of 50 multiple choice questions at 2 points each. Make-up exams are only offered to students with an excused absence. To arrange for a make-up exam see me during the first class period following your absence (or prior to your absence if possible). An unexcused absence from an exam will result in a grade of zero. Final Exam: The Final Exam is comprehensive, scantron, 100 questions at 2 points each. Laboratory Exams: There will be four lab exams worth 100 points each. Because the lab exam may be composed of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and practical questions, make-up lab exams will only be given in extreme situations. Important Note: No exams will be dropped. However, there will be extra credit questions available, each worth 1 point, on some of the exams. Activities: May include group activities, review questions, lab reports, homework assignments or online assignments. Quizzes: Periodic quizzes will cover recent topics and assigned readings from the lecture and the laboratory. A grade of zero will be recorded for missed quizzes unless an approved excuse is submitted. 12. Problem Resolution: If you have a complaint about your class, you should first request a conference with your instructor to try and resolve the problems or issues. If the problems or issues cannot be resolved at the instructor level, you should request a conference with the Division Chair, Mr. Dwight Bohlmeyer, Science 241, dbohlmeyer@blinn.edu. Electronic Device Policy: All the functions of all personal electronic devices designed for communication and/or entertainment (cell phones, pagers, beepers, ipods, and similar devices) must be turned off and kept out of sight in all Blinn College classrooms and associated laboratories. Any noncompliance with this policy will be addressed in accordance with the Blinn College civility policy (Administrative Policy). Eating and drinking are not allowed in classrooms or laboratories. Dishonesty: Blinn College does not tolerate cheating, plagiarism or other acts of dishonesty. Definitions of these acts and procedures for dealing with them are described in Scholastic Dishonesty in the Blinn College Student Handbook, copies of which are available at the information desk in the Administration Building. Attendance: The College District believes that class attendance is essential for student success; therefore, students are required to promptly and regularly attend all their classes. Each class meeting builds the foundation for subsequent class meetings. Without full participation and regular class attendance, students shall find themselves at a severe disadvantage for achieving success in college. Class participation shall constitute at least ten percent of the final course grade. It is the responsibility of each faculty member, in consultation with the division chair, to determine how participation is achieved in his or her class. Faculty will require students to regularly attend class and will keep a record of attendance from the first day of class and/or the first day the student s name appears on the roster through final examinations. If a student has one week s worth of absences during the semester, he/she will be sent an by the College requiring the student to contact his/her instructor and schedule a conference immediately to discuss his/her attendance issues. If the student subsequently accumulates two weeks worth of absences, he/she will be administratively dropped from class. There are four forms of excused absence officially designated by Blinn College: (1) Observance of religious holy days: The student should notify his/her instructor(s) no later than the 15 th day of the semester concerning the specific date(s) that the student will be absent for any religious holy day(s); and (2) Representing Blinn College at an official institutional function; and (3) official involvement in a high school activity for dual credit students; and (4) military service. Other excuses will be considered and may be considered excusable at the instructor s discretion, with documentation. Missing lecture or lab or both will count as one absence. Dropping: If a student chooses to drop the course, it is that student s responsibility to complete a drop order at the Office of Admissions and Records. Failure to do so could result in a grade of F in the course. The last day to drop with a Q is Friday, April 13, Safety is always important. We will use expensive equipment and preserved specimens. BE AWARE of those around you. If you are pregnant, or become pregnant during the semester, please let me know. Formaldehyde is used in the preservation of specimens and has been shown to be a teratogen (an agent that disturbs the development of an embryo or fetus).

They are a guide for lecture. To log in, go to and follow the directions. The handbook is available online at Please obtain and read a copy. Tips for Success: This is a challenging class!! There will be a lot of information to try to understand in a short amount of time. 1) Read the book before coming to class. 2) Work the LearnSmart assignments before coming to class 2) Print the PowerPoints and bring them to class. 3) Work the labs. 4) Use as many reviews as possible, including online study guides, study groups, etc. 5) Ask questions. 6) Study regularly (because of the amount of information covered, it is impossible to cram everything into your brain a night or two before an exam).
