1 South Portland, Maine Semester: Summer 2014 Instructor: Daniel Moore, Ph.D. Phone: (207) Office: Room 110, Marine Science Center Title: Anatomy and Physiology II with Lab Course Number: BIOL 138 Credit Hours: 4 Contact Hours: 75 Section: D1 and D2 Course Description Course Syllabus This four-credit lecture/lab course is a continuation of BIOL 132, building on many of the fundamentals. Emphasis will be on the structure and function of the following organ systems in the human body: nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive. The laboratory portion complements and reinforces the lecture, focusing on closer examination of these system structures via live and virtual dissection, and demonstration of their functions via simple testing. Anatomical models, prepared microscope slides and online resources may also be incorporated. Prerequisites: BIOL 132 Anatomy and Physiology I with Lab, or BIOL 130 Anatomy and Physiology I and BIOL 131 Anatomy and Physiology I Lab. Corequisites: none. Required materials, tools, or supplies: 1. Hole's Human Anatomy and Physiology, 13 th edition, by Shier, Butler and Lewis McGraw-Hill, 2013 ISBN : Laboratory Manual to Accompany Hole's Human Anatomy and Physiology, 13 th edition, by Martin McGraw-Hill, 2012 ISBN : Some lab supplies will be required for the online course. A list of items is in the Orientation Module. Recommended materials: Anatomy and Physiology Revealed v3 (online access) can be purchased as a bundled package with the texts, ISBN Course objectives: After successfully completing this course, the student should be able to: 1. apply the scientific method of inquiry, 2. understand anatomical vocabulary, 3. distinguish and characterize the major components of the nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive systems, 4. explain how each of the above systems functions individually and together, and 5. perform the lab experiments and activities safely, using selected supplies and equipment. Learning outcome: SMCC students apply the scientific method and employ the technological skills necessary to function effectively in an increasingly complex world.

2 Course outline: 1. Integration and coordination (Ch 11-13, Labs 26-36) 2. Transport of fluid and material (Ch 14-16, Labs 37-42) 3. Absorption and excretion (Ch 17, 19-21, Labs 43-49) 4. Human reproduction (Ch 22 and part of Ch 23, Labs 50-51) Material is presented through audio lecture recordings and lab activities, anatomy and physiology educational websites, and other assignments. PowerPoint slides may be incorporated. Other material is also available in Blackboard. Constructive participation is required throughout the semester in lecture and lab. Questions and discussions are encouraged all the time, anytime. Do not wait until something becomes a problem to get help; by then, it is often too late. Course Requirements The course is organized into Learning Modules that correspond to the Chapters and the Laboratory Exercises in the lab manual. You should look for a page called What to do in each Learning Module in the online course. The Learning Module for textbook chapters will provide practice figures, an audio lecture, outlines and other material, as well as links to websites to help you learn the material. The what-to-do page for the lab exercises will tell you which parts of the lab exercise in your lab manual to carry out, and it may ask you to do experiments at home or to watch online videos of dissections. After completing the lab report in your lab manual, you will enter the answers in an online quiz, and you will be able to see your scored quiz so that you can correct the answers you wrote in your lab manual. You will be required to log in (online classes) or attend class (campus sections) at least twice each week. You must participate each and every week in online discussions by asking 3 questions and answering 3 questions asked by other students. There are 7 timed open-book exams and 7 timed open-book lab tests that are the basis for most of your semester grade. Student Evaluation and Grading Seven equally weighted exams are given during the semester over material in the lab manual, learning module, and your textbook. Six of the exams will test material from a few chapters, but the Final Exam will cover material from all of the semester. Each of these 100-point exams is worth a little less than 9% of the semester grade. Together, all of the 7 exams are worth 60% of the semester average. These are high-value tests, so you will want be well prepared for the exams. There will be seven lab tests given during the semester. Six lab tests will focus on particular lab exercises, and the cumulative lab test will cover all the lab exercises. Each 100-point lab test is worth a bit more than 2% of the semester grade (so you could miss 100 lab test points before it influences your semester letter grade). All together, the lab tests account for 15% of the semester average. Quizzes assess whether you have done the lab exercises; these are essentially homework. As a group, the lab quizzes and your writeup of experimental results will be worth 15% of the semester average. All together, the quizzes and experimental results total more than 3000 points. The quizzes and experimental results are not equally weighted; some quizzes are short and worth only a few points, others are longer. Participation in online discussions and attendance (attending class if you re in a campus section, logging in 2 different days each week if you re taking this class completely online) will account for 10% of the semester average. You will earn up to 10 points each week by writing a minimum of 6 messages in the online study group and by logging in (or attending class) twice each week. The average of your self-assessments is a part of the semester average. You are responsible for a weekly self-assessment; the instructor will follow up. To calculate your grade at any time during the semester, average your exam scores and then multiply by 0.6. Average your lab test scores and multiply by Take the sum of all your quiz scores and divide it by all the possible points for those quizzes, then multiply this by Average all your participation points. Add the four numbers together. This calculation is performed as a running score in My Grades. Semester Average = [(average of exam scores) x 0.6] + [(average of your lab test scores) x 0.15] + [(your quiz points)/(possible quiz points) x 15] + (average of all your participation quizzes) Letter grades are assigned following the policy in the SMCC handbook:

Assessment Policy To earn full points for your work, you must complete it during the 7-day period that it is assigned. Exams, quizzes, experimental results and lab tests that are not completed during the week that they are assigned will be scored with a zero. You can take a late exam, quiz or lab test, and you can write up your experimental results right up until the last hour of the semester, but you will earn half the points. Your late work is averaged with the 0 score for the original assignment, resulting in half the points in your semester average. You must participate every week in online discussions by writing 6 messages and taking a participation quiz. This assesses your active participation each and every week. You cannot do it ahead or after a week. Your activity in the course is tracked, so inform me if you will not be accessing the course for more than one week. If you are inactive for more than one week, you will be reported as no longer attending the class. In extraordinary circumstances, such as a documented illness (with a note from your physician) or death of a close family member (with an obituary for parents or siblings), make-up work can be done without a penalty. Interfering work schedules, car problems, migraine headaches, relationship difficulties, and day care issues are not a valid excuse for missing assignments, particularly since all the assignments will be available online for 7 days. Do the assignment early in the week if complicated circumstances might come up during the weekend. There are no extra credit assignments available for this course. Participating in Online Discussions For the assigned lab exercises and for the assigned chapters, write a few questions that occurred to you while studying the material. Do your best to answer another student s question. Answering a question is likely to require you to read your textbook and do more work. The discussions are meant to be a study group where you will interact with other students, and your instructor will participate infrequently. If you have a question that you wish your instructor to answer, send directly to your instructor. Each week, write 6 messages in the discussion forums. You are encouraged to ask 3 questions and answer 3 questions from other students generate useful discussions. You can post in any forum, but you must post 6 messages each week and take a weekly self-assessment quiz. Your instructor tracks your participation in the discussions, so be honest in the self-assessment. Use the Search function in Discussions if you lose count. Use subject lines that help others to find your discussion thread at a later time. A subject line such as question is not useful. A subject line such as the hippocampus resembles a seahorse? is more helpful. Remember that the other students in your Anatomy and Physiology class are likely to be following a career path that is much like your path. These people may be friends and colleagues years from now, or they may be interviewing you for a future job. Before you post a message, look it over and ask yourself if the message has a tone that is both professional and friendly. It is appropriate to admit that you don t know everything. It is never appropriate to insult other students and use offensive language. Avoid slang words or other phrasing that is not professional. A post that says Me too or one that was copied from another student will not count as participation, and it won t make a good impression on your future colleagues. Similarly, don t write that you have no questions because you understood everything. If that s the case, then you should be able to make up a particularly insightful question so that you are actively helping your classmates to learn and think about the material.

4 You should be wary about cutting and pasting your posts from other sources without changing the phrasing and the sentence structure substantially. If you copy a few sentences or a paragraph from an internet source such as Wikipedia or from a textbook, you must say that you copied it and where you found it. You must write a few sentences to tell us what you learned from that quote and why you thought it worth copying. Pay Attention to the Schedule The material that will be covered on each test is available on the Schedule. You can also use this page to see what will be assigned for each week of the entire semester. The assignments are a reasonable pace for mastery of the material. Do not fall behind in your studies and cram for a test. This course involves learning a lot of new words and memorizing material, a goal best achieved over weeks rather than overnight. The Exams and Lab Tests Are "Open Book" You may use notes, textbooks or search engines to find answers. However, these are timed tests, and you will have just a bit more than one minute per question. You will not do well if you have not done the lab exercises and studied your textbook. You need to be fluent in the language and general concepts of anatomy and physiology to understand what is being asked in these questions. You will do better if you study the figures and memorize names of structures, so that you are able to answer most of the questions without looking for the answer. Some of the questions may involve a small detail from the lab manual or textbook, and you should have a good idea where to find the answer for a detailed question if you've studied well. You may NOT ask another person, even a spouse, for answers to questions during assessments. Another person may NOT take a test for you. You may NOT take the online assessments alongside another student. Find the Right Time and Place to Take Your Exams Make sure you have several hours without interruption to take the timed assessments. You may begin an assessment anytime, but once you start the test, the clock is ticking even if you take a break or log out. You will not have another chance to take the test due to interruptions by an animal or another person, including interfering pets, family members or children. Getting a phone call is not an acceptable excuse to retake a test or exam. You must find a time and place where you will not be interrupted. If you re on call, don t take a test. Make certain that you are using a reliable computer that has a reliable connection to the internet. Do not use a wireless connection that is inconsistent. Choose the time you take the test wisely. For example, you will not be given a chance to take a test again should you choose to take it during an ice storm when you may lose power. Do not wait until the last evening if there are forecasts of bad weather. Do not wait until the last evening if you have a history of migraines or other distracting issues. You have 7 days to choose the best time for a test. How To Do Well On The Lab Tests and Exams Do the lab exercises and fill out the lab reports. Take the online quiz for each lab exercise and review your answers. Go back to your lab manual and put correct answers into your manual. Fill in the practice diagrams available in the Learning Module, so that you are prepared for each lab test or exam. You will not have time to look up all the answers when you take exams. You can return to questions during the test, although generally one question at a time will be appearing on your computer screen. Have a blank sheet of paper to take notes as you do the online test. You might want to jot down the number of any questions that stumped you so that you can return to the question. An orientation test is required early in the semester so that you can see how an online test works and confirm that your computer works for these tests. This test will ask you about the syllabus and about plagiarism, and it will ask you to try certain things to help you become familiar with the course. You must take this test, and your score on it will count as one of the quizzes.

5 Some questions will require you to fill in the blank for a word in a sentence or to give the name of an organ or structure. Correct spelling is required, so double check the word if you are unsure of the spelling. The correct answer will require one word for one blank space. If there are two blank spaces, then it is a name that has two words. If you think that the correct answer is two words and there is one space, then check on your answer and see if there is a better answer that is one word. Please do not type two words into one blank space; you will not get credit for that answer. If a diagram appears in both the Lab Exercises and in the Learning Modules for a chapter, that diagram is likely to appear on a lab test and an exam. Memorize as many names of structures in these diagrams as you can, and practice writing them until you can spell the name perfectly. A quick answer on such a question will allow you more time to answer more difficult questions. How To Contact Your Professor The best way to contact your instructor is by sending through Blackboard. Teacher Evaluation If you have a question or a suggestion about the course format in general or an exam question in particular, please feel free to contact me directly. I do like to hear how the course could be improved, even details such as how a test question could be worded more fairly and less misleadingly. Please complete evaluations for every course you attend at SMCC at the end of the semester. Evaluations are submitted online beginning two weeks before the end of classes. The deadline for submission of evaluations occurs 24 hours after the last day of classes each semester. Instructors usually announce when the online course evaluation is available.

Course policies about online testing are modified to suit each individual s accommodations. 2. Student printing policy (new): This policy identifies the cost per page for black and white as well as color printing in varying page sizes. Specifics of the policy are outlined below: Per Page Costs Each semester students receive a $20 printing credit. The balance resets at the end of the semester and any remaining credits are removed. The cost varies depending upon page size and whether printing is done in black and white or color. a. There is a $0.10 per page fee for standard 8.5 by 11 black and white documents. b. The reverse sides of duplex (double-sided) documents are free. c. There is a $.50 per page fee for standard 8.5 by 11 color documents. d. There is a $.20 per page fee for 8.5 by 14 (legal) or 11 by 17 (tabloid) black and white documents. e. There is a $1.00 per page fee for 8.5 by 14 (legal) or 11 by 17 (tabloid) color documents. Duplex charges (printing on both sides of a page) work in the following fashion: One page is $0.10, two pages are $0.10, three pages are $0.20, and four pages are $0.20, etc. The flipsides are free, but another sheet of paper is $0.10. Please be aware that a document with any color at all (when printed to a color printer) will by default be printed in color. You are responsible for setting the print job to print black and white if you do not need color. For directions, please go to the IT Help tab in My SMCC. How does it work? The College s pay-for-print system monitors printing on all printers (including those in general access labs, library printers, the Academic Achievement Center, Noisy Lounge and technology labs). Students can check the number of pages they have printed by using the Printing Balance tool available on SMCC computers (located in the lower right corner of the screen, near the clock). Departments with work study students who need to print documents for the department should contact the HelpDesk at to have a special account set up. Refunds Print jobs are eligible for a refund in the event of mechanical or electronic error on the part of the printer, print server, or software used to submit the job. Jobs are not eligible for a refund in cases where the job was not set up correctly, was submitted multiple times, or the student is not satisfied with the result. To request a refund, please bring the offending print to the IT Department in the basement of the Ross Technology Center. Refunds will be granted in the form of a credit to the student s account. Why is SMCC charging for printing? The pay-for-print system is an effort to control escalating printing costs. Charging for printing helps offset the increasing cost of supplies and encourages students to conserve resources. To find ways to reduce your printing charges, please go to the IT Help tab on My SMCC. If you have questions about the pay-for-printing policy or your printing charges, please contact the HelpDesk at or send an to helpdesk@smccme.edu. Be sure to log OUT of the system when you ve finished your printing, to prevent unauthorized access to your account. 3. Drop/Add: Students who drop a course during the one-week drop/add period in the fall and spring semesters, and the first three days of summer sessions, receive a 100% refund of the tuition and associated fees for that course. Please note any course that meets for less than the traditional semester length, i.e., 15 weeks, has a pro-rated drop/add period. There is no refund for non-attendance. IMPORTANT: Remaining enrolled after Drop/Add week means you understand and accept the requirements, policies, and instructions spelled out here, and in Blackboard. 4. Withdrawal: A student may withdraw from a course only during the semester in which s/he is registered for that course. The withdrawal period is the 2 nd through 12 th week of the fall and spring semesters and the 2 nd through 9 th week of 12-week summer courses. This period is prorated for shorter-length courses. To withdraw from a course, a student must complete and submit the appropriate course withdrawal form, available at the Enrollment Service Center (no phone calls, please). The designation W will appear on the transcript after a student has officially withdrawn. A course withdrawal is an uncompleted course and may adversely affect financial aid eligibility. Failure to attend or ceasing to attend class does not constitute withdrawal from the course. There is no refund associated with a withdrawal.

7 5. Plagiarism: Adherence to ethical academic standards is required. Plagiarism is cheating and is a serious offense, whether it consists of taking credit for work done by another person or doing work for which another person will receive credit. Taking and using the ideas or writings of another person without clearly and fully crediting the source is plagiarism and violates the academic code as well as the Student Code of Conduct. If it is suspected that a student in any course in which s/he is enrolled has knowingly committed such a violation, the faculty member should refer the matter to the College s Disciplinary Officer and appropriate action will be taken under the Student Code of Conduct. Sanctions may include suspension from the course and a failing grade in the course. Students have the right to appeal these actions to the Disciplinary Committee under the terms outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. 6. Early Alert and Academic Alert: a. The first four weeks of the semester is the Early Alert period. Student progress is monitored closely during this time. The 5 th through the 9 th week is the Academic Alert period. Student progress continues to be monitored during this time. Students who are doing below-average work during these time frames receive an Early Alert and/or Academic Alert grade of U (unsatisfactory, below a C). These alerts are intended to raise students awareness about their performance. b. Grades of U (unsatisfactory) are sent to your advisor, who will notify you about scheduling a meeting to discuss strategies for improvement. Think about specific ways you can improve your performance and take these ideas with you to the meeting. The Early Alert and Academic Alert periods cover the first half of the semester. If you are still performing unsatisfactorily at mid-term, it may be very difficult to earn a passing grade. c. These alert grades do not change. They do not become part of your permanent record and no other schools have access to them. They only reflect your performance for those time frames. However, these grades DO affect your final course grade, obviously, because your course grade continues to change as the semester progresses and you complete more work. Your final course grade may be different from your Early Alert and Academic Alert grades, i.e., higher, lower, or the same, depending on your performance. You should calculate your grade often and know where you stand. d. If your course grade continues to stay at C or above (satisfactory), keep up the good work You won t receive an Early Alert grade or Academic Alert grade. 7. Administrative failure (grade of "AF"): a. Administrative failure is the consequence of missing work for a one-week period, OR not logging in at all for a one-week period, with no prior notification to the instructor regarding the reason. (The time frame for this policy differs by course.) b. A grade of AF is submitted to the Registrar immediately at the end of the two-week period. Basically, an AF grade drops the student from the course. The student may then contact the instructor to request reinstatement in the course. Reinstatement is at the instructor s discretion and is generally not granted because too much work has been missed by that time. Late work is not accepted, and makeup work is not available. c. A grade of AF is also assigned in cases of cheating and other inappropriate conduct. In these cases, other consequences may be imposed on the student. d. An AF student can contact the Registrar and request that the grade of AF be changed to W (withdrawn) if done before the final drop date. Students earning an AF or W are still financially responsible for the course. 8. End-of-course evaluation (online): Students are asked to complete evaluations for each course attended at SMCC. Evaluations are submitted online and can be accessed through the student portal site. Students can access the course evaluation report beginning two weeks before the end of classes. The deadline for submission of evaluations occurs 24 hours after the last day of classes each semester. Instructors will announce when the online course evaluation is available. Evaluations have no effect on your grade. Instructors don't see student comments until grades have been submitted.
