It encompasses structure and function of selected organs systems and systems of the human body. The focus of this second course is on the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, immune, urinary and reproductive systems. Additionally, the biochemistry of energy production and metabolism are discussed. Remark: This course together with BSC 1085 provides the foundation for an understanding of the human body. Most students taking this course plan a career in health care. To anyone planning to work in the health field this class will be the background to a deeper understanding about yourself and your patients. A patient s life or health may depend on whether you know what you are doing. Additionally, this class will provide the necessary background for other professional courses that rely on anatomy and physiology. Therefore, learn as much as you can in this class. 3 Course Objectives: At the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. discuss the anatomy and the biochemical and physiological activity of the endocrine system. 2. describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system. 3. discuss the anatomy and physiology of the respiratory, digestive, immune, lymphatic, urinary and reproductive systems. 4. explain aspects of human metabolism, nutrition and fluid balance. 5. analyze clinical manifestation of pathological conditions while considering normal anatomy and physiology of the affected organ system. 6. relate the connections between healthy functions of human organ systems in an integrative manner. Pre- and Co-Requirements for this course: College level reading and writing! Successful completion of BSC 1085 and BSC 1085L. Current enrollment in, or completion of BSC 1086L (the laboratory part of this course). Note that lab and lecture complement each other. Computer literacy, which means you must be comfortable working on the internet, watching streaming downloads, using and working in a content management system like WebCT or Blackboard. Required materials: NOTE- YOU HAVE CHOICES Look at the graphics below. It tells you what you need and about what it costs in different options. 1. Everyone needs full access to this course on Since some material is proprietary by the textbook publisher they charge a fee. 2. Everyone needs to work with Interactive Physiology (=IP) 3. 4 FIRST log into THIS course in and watch the orientation THEN: If you own the Marieb package you have: FREE access to MyA&P Interactive Physiology The package = Textbook, MyA&P access code; IP CDRom If you own another recent edition of either SALADINs or MARTINIs A&P textbook you may just purchase access to My A&P without the e- textbook This will include access to Interactive Physiology If you own no textbook but prefer the cheaper online textbook (ebook) you need to Purchase access to My A&P with the e- textbook option This will include access to Interactive Physiology Expected work during the term: 1. I will upload recorded power-point lectures on some selected topics, and unnarrated side-shows on most chapters. I recommend strongly that you view them. They show you what to focus on in each chapter and they also provide some additional background and information. However, they do not replace your studying of the the topics in the textbook. 2. Study and master deep content by working with the textbook and doing the IP reviews. Take notes. You will not do well on the chapter tests and IP-quizzes if you do not use your textbook and also work in Interactive Physiology. For IP quizzes have your notes next to you. 3. Use Interactive Physiology for all relevant topics. The textbook comes with the CD-ROM. You can also link to IP online from within My A&P. 4. Complete the assigned tests and IP-quizzes ON TIME. (You are expected to finish those at least a day BEFORE the deadline. The deadline is the last resort.) a. All tests and quizzes will have to be completed and submitted at 11 pm on the deadline date. Again, plan on completing and submitting at least 24 hours before the deadline. b. There will be a time limit for each test. c. There is one attempt only for each test or quiz. So make certain you take them at a time when you will NOT be interrupted. 5. Comment on the podcasts within the discussion board area of Feel free to respond also to your co-students remarks. 5 Assessments: All tests and quizzes are to be taken in in the assessment area. However, the comprehensive final exam must be taken on campus. Note: you cannot get a passing grade without taking the comprehensive final exam. These are the items used for assessing your progress, knowledge, and level of comprehension: 1. Online test for each topic-chapter (10 total). 2. IP (=Interactive Physiology) review quizzes (8 total) 3. Your comments and discussion contributions on the podcasts. (3+ total) 4. A comprehensive final exam, to be taken in the college on the specified date. You will need green Scantron sheets and a #2 pencil for the final exam. Grading: The final total percentage will be calculated from: Assessment: Chapter tests 10*25 points = 250 points IP review quizzes 8*25 points = 200 points Podcast responses 3*10 points = 30 points the final exam = 200 points Sum total = 680 points GRADES will be determined out of 650 points, so you all receive a 30-point bonus. Note: there will be no extra credit or grade adjustment due to the above!! A=90-100% B=80-89%; C=70-79%; D=60-69%; F= less than 60%.
