2 REQUESTED AUSPICES: Ministero della Salute Provincia di Bologna Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna Treatment of brain tumors is a challenge. After a dark age of poor options in diagnosis, biological knowledge and treatments, characterized by the feeling that this field of medical oncology might remain motionless, recent years have seen new improvements that have consistently changed the landscape. These advances have been the fruit of the efforts of many clinicians and biologists that, both individually and together, have led to the organization and realization of clinical studies providing new therapeutic standards and, more importantly, the increased survival of patients with brain tumors. Thanks to the foresight and experience of these colleagues, clinical research has been flanked by molecular biology studies enabling us to understand and fight our common enemy, and its intrinsic characteristics, with an enhanced response to treatments and new instruments for developing targeted and selective strategies. It is my pleasure to welcome to this bi-annual Meeting taking place in Bologna for the first time many friends and colleagues who, throughout the years, have contributed to the development of Neuro-Oncology. I hope that this Meeting will provide a clear picture of the state of the art in this field, but that it will also stimulate new research and further international collaboration.
